Pastoral Perceptions for April 2019

by Pastor Roger Dennis

Beginning April 1 at 12:10 and 6 pm each Monday, I will be offering healing services with the laying on of hands anointing with oil. Given what has been happening in our church and local community, I believe the Holy Spirit is calling for these services to be offered. Below are some quick questions and answers!

Why are two service times on Monday?

Some people’s schedule may preclude being at the church over the noon hour while others may not be able to make it during the evening. The service will consist of a prayer litany, appropriate scripture reading, and an invitation to come forward to the altar to receive the laying on of hands, and be anointed with oil. Services of healing have a long history. There is a service in our hymnals, though I will offer a modified form. the service will be less than 30 minutes. Do I need to come forward if I attend the service? No. Not only is each person different, but the service allows the opportunity to come and pray for others or to support others by attending with another person. Do I need to make an offering? No. A collection plate will be available if a person decides to make an offering. There is no offering or offertory in the actual service. Has Pastor done this in the past?

Yes, I have responded to individual requests (a couple of requests recently with another request to schedule another). St. John has not offered a consistent weekly service in recent years. I have offered weekly Monday evening Services in two other congregations, one of which lasted until I accepted another call. Is this service specific to health issues? No. Healing is not limited to the physical, but many of us struggle with mental, emotional, spiritual, and other dynamics such as loss of loved ones that sap or well-being. Can people other than members of our congregation participate? Definitely! Pastor Dennis

Graduate Assistance Requested

Please notify the Church office (April 20th deadline) with names of a loved one who will be graduating in May whether from the 8th grade, high school or college as the graduates will be listed in the May newsletter. Please do not assume the Church office knows about the graduate, especially the college graduate.

Notification may be as simple as sending an e-mail ([email protected]), leaving a note on the back of your communion card or calling or stopping by the Church office.

PMA Notes:

Confession, Discernment, Praise, Creed, Plea, and Lament! What does this have to do with anything? These my friends are all part of the Lenten Services during Lent. “Prayer” I believe this context in within every aspect of prayer to be covered. When we pray to God, what do we prayer for? Each and every person is different not only in what they pray for, but also, in how they pray. This is also our theme for the Lenten Luncheons as well.

Have you ever thought about prayer? I know I have. I often, when I begin, say “Lord I am not eloquent, I am not a Priest with a wide vocabulary; sometimes I feel that I am being selfish, sometimes I question how I talk to you.” Then I stop and say to myself, Enough!

To pray is to converse with our lord and mostly it is sometimes a one sided conversation. To me, this is how I begin to organize my thoughts. When I pray I don’t say as some more eloquently say, “To our most Gracious and Precious Lord.” Most often I simply blurt out what is needed for me to say. When I confess to god of my sins, usually, it is in private and so I simply assume a prayerful attitude and begin praying. I am simple and that is not a bad thing! I would if I were praying simply say, “Uh God…. I know you have my back in all things, but today…. I really messed up, I was…” and so I continue.

For all people I would say this; it is in the act not the words! It is in your heart not the words! God is listening! God will guide us in all things. Remember to pray is to give yourself up to God and Admit, Ask, Praise, Plea, and Lament any of these and all of these! Even in our Creed, we are reminding ourselves as well as others! Our

season of discipline is to choose to journey with Christ and adhere to a promise made or a list made to follow through Lent.

My final thought would be; that when I pray I lose myself and find my faith; see the hope of God’s love. He listens to all of us; even me! Thank you my father. In this way I am truly blessed. I am honored to say as well that this month I was able to assist with home communions, nursing home communions, and help lead a service or two. We are working within the community as well as our Community Backpack program is still going strong! As I always say; I am grateful to St. John to be able to help in the ways I am able! Have a Blessed Week!

Thank you, John Dumler, PMA
