ROSARIES FOR THE MISSIONS

The next meeting of the Rosary Makers is this Tuesday, June 26, at 9:00 AM in the parish

Dear parishioners,

Today we celebrate the birthday of our

parish patron, St. John the Baptist. Some of

my favorite things about John the Baptist in-

clude 1) how he was introduced to Jesus. It

was when Mary visited her cousin, Elizabeth.

Both women were expecting. John the Baptist

in the womb of Elizabeth felt the presence of

Jesus in the womb of Mary and leapt for joy.

Life begins at conception. What a beautiful

prolife message John the Baptist gives to us!

2) Another of my favorite stories about John

the Baptist happened about thirty years later

when Jesus came to John asking for baptism,

John once again recognized Jesus at once and

said, “Look, there is the Lamb of God who

takes away the sins of the world.” (John 1:29)

John the Baptist said it how it was. He didn’t

pretend to be Jesus but pointed Him out to

others. These words have found their way into

the prayer of Mass; when the priest holds up

the Sacred Host as we prepare for Holy Com-

munion, he says, “Behold the Lamb of God

who takes away the sins of the world...” These

words are meant to prepare us to approach

and receive Our Savior in Holy Communion. 3)

I love how after baptizing Jesus, once again

we see John turning the attention away from

himself and to Jesus as he declared, “He must

increase, I must decrease.” (John 3:30) What

humility John the Baptist shows in these

words. This is one of my favorite passages in

Scripture. I actually have these words printed

on the personal checks that I write, to always

remind me of this special prayer from St. John

the Baptist. Is it any wonder that I was as-

signed Pastor here at St. John the Baptist? 4)

I also love how John the Baptist spoke with

fervor! He always stood up for the teaching of

Jesus. We see this in John’s great courage in

condemning the marriage of Herod to Herod’s

brother’s wife. This is a reminder to us that

not everything that is allowed by law is moral-

ly right. May we imitate St. John the

Baptist in his humility, fervor and courage

in his authenticity to live and speak the

truth of our faith in Jesus Christ.

Baptismal preparation class is a pre-requisite for this sacrament. Please contact the parish office six months in advance to make arrangements for this class. Sick Calls: Please call the parish office to inform of an illness or hospitalization. Pastoral visits are made to the local hospitals and nursing homes throughout the week. Home visits are made upon request. Funerals: Funeral luncheons are prepared and served for members of the parish. OSF HealthCare Hospice Volunteers Needed You can make a real difference in the life of a person who has a life-limiting illness. Volunteers are needed to help patients and their families in their time of need. OSF has a wide variety of opportunities: spend time with patients, run errands, assist with light housekeeping, provide respite for the family, and opportunities to serve in clerical functions in the office. There are no medical responsibilities involved for Hospice Volunteers.

~ Diocesan Appeal ~ We have reached our goal for the Diocesan

Appeal, but please do send in your donation or pledge if you have not yet done so. All of the dona-tions received for the Diocesan Appeal in excess of our goal will be returned to the parish, and we will use those funds for the repair and maintenance of our beautiful stained glass windows. The cost to re-pair the one window in the choir loft is estimated at $30,000. We currently have $5,770 for this project.
