Teacher reads the following story, using provided pictures to tape on easel or use as magnets for story visual aids. An easel would be a good way to prop up the magnetic board.
“St.JoanwasapeasantgirlfromFrance.Attheageof16yearsold,sheheardvoicesofSt.Catherine,St.Margaret,andSt.MichaeltheArchangel.ThesevoicesbegantotellhertohelpfightforthefreedomofFrancewhichhadbeenoverrunbyEngland.”
Place picture of Joan in dress on board.
“Thisyounggirltraveledtospeaktothedauphin,theprinceofFrance.Shebeggedhispermissiontoleadanarmyagainsttheenemy.Thecommanderofthesoldierslaughedatsuchathought.Shewasasmall,poorpeasantgirlthatdidn’tevenknowhowtorideahorse.Howcouldsheleadanarmyofstrongmenintobattle?”
Place picture of dauphin on board next to Joan.
“Joanwhisperedasecrettothedauphin.Shetoldhimofthreethingsthathehadprayedabout.ThedauphinknewthatonlyheandGodknewwhatthesethreethingswere.WhenJoanrevealedthesethingstohim,hewasconvincedthatshehadindeedbeensentbyGodtosaveFrance.Hegaveherahorse,armorandseveralhundredsoldiers.St.Joansetoffcarryingastaffwithaflag.TheflaghadapictureofJesusandangels.ItcarriedthewordsJesusandMariaonit.”

Place sword on board.
“TheEnglishweredefeatedbythispeasantgirl.Theywereveryangry.InoneofJoan’sfinalbattlesfortheking,shewassurroundedbytheenemyBurgundians.Hersoldiersretreated.Joanstayedbehindtofight,butwasoutnumbered.Shewascapturedandtakenasaprisoner.
Place ropes around Joan.
“WhenEnglandheardofJoan’scapture,theyofferedtheBurgundianssixthousandfrancsforher.TheyagreedtosellSt.Joan.Shewasputinacellandchainedtheretoawaithertrial.”
Place money on board.
“Thejudgeandothercourtofficialsweredishonestandwicked.TheyunfairlycondemnedJoantodeathdeclaringherawitchandaheretic.St.JoanofArcwasburnedatthestakeonMay30,1431.Beforeshedied,sheforgaveallthathaddonethistoherandsheaskedforgivenessfromanyonethatshemighthaveoffended.Withherlastbreath,shesaidthenameofJesus.”

1. Tearsheetsoftissuepaperintosmallirregularshapesabout1-inchinsize.
2. Placenewspaperateachchild’sworkareaforeasycleanup.
3. Putasmallpileoftissuepaperpiecesateachchild’sworkarea.
4. Giveeachchildasmallpapercuphalffullofgluemixturewithapaintbrush.
5. Placeajarateachchild’sworkstation,orallowchildrentochoosetheirownjariftheyaredifferentinsizeandshape.
1. Writenamesonthebottomofthejarswithpermanentmarker.
2. Allowchildrentopaintgluemixtureoverasmallareaoftheirjar.
3. Placetissuepaperpieces,coveringglue.Usedifferentcolorsrandomly.
4. Continueprocess,alternatingwithcoveringwithglueinsmallareasandplacingtissuepaperoverglueuntilthewholejariscovered.
5. Whenjariscompletelycovered,giveeachchildapictureofSt.JoanofArcandglueitonthestainedglassjar.Addmoregluemixturetotheareawherethepicturewillbeplaced.Ifthepicturedoesnotstick,thenusegluethatisnotwatereddown.

4. GiveeachchildtheSt.JoanofArcpiecewith6foamstickers.HavechildrenapplydoublelayersofthestickersinthreespotsonthebackoftheSt.JoanofArcpicture.PlacethispictureovertheSt.JoanofArcpartofthebackgroundpiece.Eachpieceshouldappeartobepoppingoffoftheoriginalpicture.
5. Havechildrendecoratetheposterboardframewithsequinsandplasticgemstones.
6. GivechildrenaCDcase.Havechildrenplacethereliefpictureinsidethecaseandclose.
7. Usecleartapetotapecaseshut.
