My Dear Friends,
This week, on July 16th, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I always looked
forward to this feast day as a child and as a teenager because of the feast at Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Church in the Town Plot section of Waterbury. My grandmother lived around the block from the church,
and many of my relatives volunteered at the feast, held in the parking lot of Mount Carmel. I would look
forward to the fried dough especially. The feast would include the procession in the streets of the statue
of Our Lady of Mount Carmel as well. Even though I have not attended the feast in many years, I know
that every year Mount Carmel still has the feast in honor of their patron saint.
Also this week, I remember fondly July 17th. Six years ago on July 17th, I brought my little Yorkie,
Barley, home. He was five months old and weighed only 3.9 pounds He’s now a little over 6 pounds. He
has been a joy these last six years and has brought life into the rectories that I have lived in. I know not
everyone is a dog person, but I can honestly say that dogs are wonderful companions and one of God’s
great gifts to mankind. Some people have asked why I named him, Barley. It’s very simple; he is
named after an ingredient in beer, although I must confess that even after six years, I don’t think he
really knows his name. Either that, or he is very stubborn when called. In any event, this week we
celebrate our Blessed Mother under her title, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and we celebrate adoption day
for Barley.
May God bless,
Fr. John

The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer,
Redemptorists, is a missionary congregation that
ministers to the poor in more than 70 countries around the
world. The area of the former Soviet Union is undoubtedly
a place where many neglected people need help. Thanks
to the efforts of Polish Redemptorists, we have been
building the next church there. In front of us, there is the
next project: the completion of the construction at the
church and pastoral center in Togliatti—central Russia.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to all of you

From the Director of Music
Dear Friends,
It is with gratitude that I begin my ministry of music here at St. Katharine Drexel. I would like to
thank Fr. John and members of the search committee for giving me the opportunity to be with you.
Father and I will collaborate to build and grow our music program that encourages your
participation in the sung prayer of the Church. I come to you with just over 20 years of Christian
liturgical music experience, degrees, certificates, etc. But more importantly, I come with a desire to give glory
to Almighty God for the many blessings in our lives and inspire what St. Augustine meant when he said,
"Singing is twice praying." My journey to St. Katharine Drexel, both personally and professionally, has had
bumps in the road. Our lives all have conflicts and distractions, but for me, through the trials, one constant
has remained: that is the music. I have a special devotion to the Italian mystic and Saint, Padre Pio. One of
Pio's famous sayings is, "Prega la speranza e non preoccuparti," translated to, "Pray, hope, and don't worry."
I would ask for your prayers as I begin this next chapter with you; let's work together to make a joyful noise.
Do not hesitate to approach me with any questions or comments you may have before or after Mass. I
look forward to meeting you. St. Cecelia - ora pro nobis.
