Third Sunday in Ordinary Time In the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body … and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:13). Today begins the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. All baptized Christians drink of the same Spirit that came upon Jesus. St. Paul speaks to the ‘scandal of division’ among Christians when he exhorts us to show greater honour and greater respect to those members of the body who seem different from us. If one member suffers, all suffer. When one member is honoured, all rejoice. One cannot be a Christian alone. SUNDAY, JANUARY 27, 2013 THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Are you looking for a change? Jesus’ return to Nazareth and his lectoring in the synagogue was an event. The hometown boy had been away. There were rumors, tales of healing and signs, and here was Jesus back home, reading Isaiah’s promises that God will rescue, heal, release, and restore people. Perhaps there was something in Jesus’ tone that moved them to look up and stare intently at him—a new maturity, an authority. It’s what happens when a person studies, prays, and listens to God and to the signs of the times. It changes you—if you allow yourself to be changed. In Jesus a promise in an ancient scroll was actually coming about in their midst. What about you and the ordinary folk in your life? Is not God still at work if you are open to grace?

TODAY’S READINGS: Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10; 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 or 12:12-14, 27; Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 (69) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.”

MONDAY, JANUARY 28 FEAST OF THOMAS AQUINAS, PRIEST, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Freed to be holy Father Robert Barron, the host of the well-received Catholicism series, has written a number of books on theology and Catholic life, and one of his first was a study of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Thomas Aquinas: Spiritual Master. In it he pointed out that for a person such as Thomas, joining the then-new Dominican order was a very “downwardly mobile” move. The Dominicans were (and still are) a community of mendicant (“begging”) friars. That poverty has made it easier for them to move about fulfilling their mission of preaching, teaching, study, and prayer. You, too, can simplify your life and reduce what is unnecessary in order to practice a spiritual poverty that, in the words of Saint Dominic, the order’s founder, frees you to “speak only with God or about God.”

TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 9:15, 24-28; Mark 3:22-30 (317) “If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.”

TUESDAY, JANUARY 29 Let faith lead you to understanding Faith is not the same thing as unquestioned belief. In fact, having faith often compels us to ask questions to better understand the God in whom we have faith. In talking about the Creed, the Catechism of the Catholic Church affirms the words of Saint Anselm: “Faith seeks understanding.” Our desire to know God better can lead to “a more penetrating knowledge” that “will in turn call forth a greater faith, increasingly set afire by love” (no. 156). This desire not only to believe but also to understand and love is present in us throughout our lives. We are invited time and again to a deeper sense of scripture, to understand how to apply the wisdom of our faith to our daily lives, and to articulate our faith to others. What are some ways that your faith seeks understanding?

TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 10:1-10; Mark 3:31-35 (318) “Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30 Faith goes to school During Catholic Schools Week we remember and are thankful for the fact that the tradition of Catholic schools remains the same: “A Catholic education is an education for life.” A Catholic education, whether on Sundays or five days a week, provides the foundation and the tools young people need to grow into faithful

followers of Christ. The patron saint of teachers, John Baptist de la Salle, put it best: “Enter to learn, leave to serve.”

TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 10:11-18; Mark 4:1-20 (319) “Those sown on rich soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”

THURSDAY, JANUARY 31 FEAST OF JOHN BOSCO, PRIEST Offer an ounce of prevention Saint John Bosco was a 19th-century Italian priest, educator, and writer who dedicated his life to the betterment and education of troubled youth. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than harsh punishment, which was the norm at the time. The Salesian Preventative System, as it came to be known, is built on a three-fold base of reason, religion, and loving-kindness. Music and games are also part of the picture. Bosco saw that only when at-risk youth know they are loved can they develop the self-esteem and discipline necessary to believe in a better future for themselves. What was true in Don Bosco’s time is true today. Support a program that serves troubled youth.

TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 10:19-25; Mark 4:21-25 (320) “The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you.”

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1 How the mustard seed has spiced up spiritual life The tiny mustard seed adds flavor not only to a lot of foods but also to a number of religious stories. We are familiar with the gospel parable of the mustard seed, which Jesus used as a model for the reign of God. To teach humility Jewish texts compared the knowable universe to the size of a mustard seed. And the Quran states that no soul will suffer the least injustice on the Day of Judgment because even the equivalent of a mustard seed will be accounted for on God’s scales of justice. The next time you open a jar of mustard, pause for a moment and ponder the lessons it has taught!

TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 10:32-39; Mark 4:26-34 (321) “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God . . . ? It is like a mustard seed.”

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2 FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD Time for a fiesta! In Mexican communities, today’s feast is an occasion to share tamales and a party. The host for the party actually got the assignment back on January 6, the Epiphany. On that day Mexicans share the traditional Rosca de los Reyes, a ring-shaped sponge cake that symbolizes the crown worn by the three wise men/three kings, who warned Mary and Joseph to flee Herod’s wrath. One or more small plastic figurines of a baby are hidden in the cake to symbolize the Christ child who needed to be hidden from Herod. If on January 6 your piece of the Rosca contains one of the figurines, you are expected to host a party today in celebration of the safe passage of Jesus from Epiphany to the Presentation. Don’t forget the tamales!

TODAY’S READINGS: Malachi 3:1-4; Hebrews 2:14-18; Luke 2:22-40 or 2:22-32 (524) “Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.”
