Enkindling a Deeper Faith

Supporting Education Offering a place to learn

and rest in the Lord

“I was an atheist until camp, so it changed my life. I found God,” said 15 year old Elisabeth who recently attended summer camp at the San Pedro Spiritual Development Center in Winter Park. She is one of the 9,000 visitors who encounter God at the center each year.

On any given day at San Pedro there may be engaged couples preparing for marriage at a Pre-Cana weekend, people participating in a book club led by one of the Franciscan friars, a variety of retreats taking place or a member of the faithful simply encountering God in the serene beauty of the center’s natural surroundings.

Supported by Our Catholic Appeal, San Pedro Center serves the people of the diocese as a place set apart for human, intellectual, spiritual and pastoral development. It recently became the home of Faith Fit Enrichment, a certification and continuing education program for diocesan catechists and teachers.

With recent building upgrades and future plans to enhance the center, San Pedro Director Franciscan Brother Randall Pinner says, “Our vision is to create the perfect environment for people and groups to become aware of God’s presence in their lives amidst the beauty and peace of God’s creation.”

IT’S TIME FOR THE SOUPER BOWL!

More than 28 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group. “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.” Our youth will collect nonperishable food items. These items will be donated to St. Vincent De Paul's food pantry. We will be competing with neighboring parishes to see who collects the most items. Items most requested are meals that would feed a family, such as: Pasta (spaghetti, penne, fettuccine, macaroni and cheese) Sauces (any kind that could be used on the pasta) Rice (white or yellow) and black beans Canned meats of any kind (chicken, tuna, ham)

Mass for Marriage February 10 at 10 AM

This is a terrific way to celebrate National Marriage Week and Valentine’s Day! No registration is required. Married couples, engaged couples and all who support marriage are invited to attend. This year, to help commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Diocese, the Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Noonan at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. All couples attending are invited to have their picture taken with the Bishop by a professional photographer. (Pictures are with the couple and Bishop only. Photos will be available to view and print from a designated Diocesan website several days after the Mass.) Light refreshments will be served following the Mass.

The Second Commandment: You Shall not Take the Lord’s Name in Vain

It is not uncommon for people to come into the confessional and say that they have used the Lord’s name in vain. They never quite elaborate what they mean by that. Perhaps they might not entirely understand what the Commandment really meant. So, in this reflection, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

Is using the term ‘God’ carelessly an offense to the 2nd commandment? People say “Oh my God” a lot, don’t they? Does that mean they have committed a grave sin? I daresay, it depends.

‘God’ isn’t technically the name of that Supreme Being who created everything, is it? Scriptures didn’t say His name was “God.” It is as much a title we attribute to Him as the term Adonai (Lord) that the Jewish people use. So to go as far as avoiding using it or spelling it out, like the seminarian whom I mentioned in part 1, is entirely unnecessary and scrupulous.

That being said, the term ‘God’ still carries a spiritual association that demands a sense of respect. It might not be his proper name, but it does not mean it should be treated with indifference, disrespect or even disdain.

For example, out of respect I don’t call my mother by her proper name. ‘Mom’ is just a word of endearment with which I call her. Though it isn’t her name, I don’t use the word ‘mom’ in a disrespectful manner either.

Most of the time, I realize, we utter the word ‘God’ almost out of habit or carelessness, not malice. To risk generalizing, and only due to my work with the youth that I observe, teenage girls do this a lot to dramatize the conversation. Now, that doesn’t mean the dudes don’t do it. They just tend to have more colorful language to use instead. Once again, I don’t think they do so intentionally. It has just become a habit. A habit is hard to break. So, instead of chastising I think it is just important that we remember to be mindful in what context the term ‘God’ should be used. Is it appropriate? Is it proper and respectful?

It is an entirely different story if it is done in a malicious or intentional way to cause offense. We have a term for that, it’s called ‘blasphemy.’ To use the name of God, Jesus or even Mary and the saints, out of hatred of religion, out of disdain for God, is a grave sin.

The Catechism goes as far as saying, “It is blasphemous to make use of God’s name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce people to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death” (CCC, 2148). In other words, the name of a God who is love, cannot and must not be associated with violence and bloodshed.

There are a few other things that fall under the umbrella of this commandment. They are namely false oaths and perjury. The Lord Himself said, “Let what you say be simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one” (Mt. 5:33-34). If someone has called upon God to be his or her witness, then it’d better be true. No one should make God to be a liar.

In short, someone may say, “What’s the big deal? It is just a name?” Well, no. It is not just a name. Because it is connected to Someone so much greater than a name. That Someone has gone to a lot of trouble to establish an intimate relationship with us, even though He really didn’t need to. The reason is that He loves us and He only longs for us to love him back in return. When you love someone, even the name has great meaning to you. When you love someone, you don’t abuse the name of the person whom you love. Why should God be treated any differently?

St. James Cathedral will be participating in an international Parish survey! Please Read

St. James Cathedral will be participating in an international Parish survey about discipleship conducted by the Catholic Leadership Institute!

Please help us participate by completing a 10-15 minute survey online. The survey can be accessed online at www.disciplemakerindex.com or in paper form at the Parish. The survey will only be

available from Saturday, January 27 – Monday, February 19, and will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and enable you to provide feedback on our Parish’s efforts help you grow in your faith. All responses will be confidential and the Parish will only receive information about the community as whole.

We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to Fr. Miguel and our various ministries as we plan for the future and strive to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this spring/summer, at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire Parish.

If you don’t use the internet, there will be opportunities to complete the survey after daily and Sunday Mass, and you can obtain a paper copy by contacting the Parish Office at 407-422-2005.

Thank you for helping with this important project!
