ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in the Catholic Faith, in order to build up the reign of God, the mission of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church is to live out the message of Jesus Christ by worshipping God by serving the world.

Reminder: If you would like to use your debit/credit card for your weekly offering, please stop by the church office. You can also set up automatic deposits from your bank to the church. Please consider including your St. James family when planning your will.

PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacri-fice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Why Register In the Church Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not registered parishioners. It is important to be registered and use your offering enve-lopes so that if you ever request a letter, whether it’s for being a godparent, sponsor, marriage, confirmation, tax statement or any other purpose, we can check our records and see that you attend Mass here. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year’s Reli-gious Education Program. If you are not registered in the church, we can-not issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and re-ceive offering envelopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner’s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Pastor’s Message

Light a Candle, Say a Prayer, Support your Church - Did you know we have a special reserved area for prayer in our church? It's our little Blessed Sacrament chapel, and it's located in the Northwest corner of the church. There, we reserve some consecrated hosts - the Body of Christ - in the tabernacle (that is why we have a candle burning in that area). In addition to images of Mary and Joseph and Jesus, we also have a panel of votive candles. A strong tradition among Christians since the beginning of the Church is to light a candle, while saying a prayer for a loved one or for a special intention. The lighted candle represents Christ, the Light of the World, who brings light and life into our lives. Donations are made when lighting a candle. So, take a moment after mass sometime, to visit Our Lord in the chapel, and Light a Candle, Say a Prayer, and Sup-port your Church!

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James, THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST This weekend we celebrate the solemnity which we used to call “Corpus Christi,” or the Body of Christ. The current title expresses more completely the totality of what we celebrate every time we come to Mass: it is really the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ. You can’t get any more real than this humble presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It’s not some sort of sign or symbol, but the real pres-ence of Christ who humbles himself to come among us under the appearance of simple bread and wine. In her wisdom, the Church gives us this solemnity each year to help remind us of that solemn mystery of Christ’s real and sacramental presence among us. Sometimes we can easily fall into the routine of the Mass each week and forget the reality of Christ’s presence among us in the simplicity of the Holy Eucharist. As St. Augustine would remind us, when we receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, “we are to become what we receive.” I hope each one of us can take some quiet time this week to ponder this most sacred mys-tery of Christ’s real presence among us, and the privilege we have in this most intimate encounter with the God who loves us without condi-tion, without exception. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2018 Last Sunday at the 11AM Mass the Sacrament of Confirmation was conferred on ten teens and one adult from our parish, one teen from St. Anne’s Parish, one adult from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, and three teens from Seattle, Washington. These last three teens were baptized by Bishop Thomas when he was an Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle. What a special honor for them, and us, that they were able to be confirmed by Bishop Thomas at our parish celebration. And, as usual, a CELEBRATION it truly was! It was Bishop Thomas’ first visit to our parish, and he thoroughly enjoyed our family of faith, the newly confirmed, and the vibrant ministry of our Gospel Choir. The sentiments he expressed at the end of Mass are a definite affir-mation of our parish community. He said personally to me, “Jim, you’ve got a great parish here!” Of course, that’s a “no-brainer” for me! Many thanks to Ms. Arsenia Eagan, our Director of Faith Formation, and her loyal Confirmation catechists Cisco & Gladys Alemar and Birdie Ray. You touched the hearts of our teens and they are all the better because of you! Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor

Did you know that the Dominicans have a Third Order, too! Known as Tertiaries, these followers of St. Dominic strive to grow in spirituality by showing their love and service to their parish family and the community at large. Through prayer and study they are able to grow in the ways of St Dominic. St. Tho-mas, and St. Catherine of Siena. Come and learn more about the Lay Order of Preachers. The group meets once a month at UNLV at the Newman Center. Our next meeting is at the New-man Center at 9:00 am April 28, 2018. (Next Chapter Meeting is 5/19/18) Fr. Daniel Roland, OP is the spiritual Director of this group of lay Dominicans. If you would like more informa-tion on the Lay Order of Preachers or how you can join, please visit http://bartololongo.org
