PRAYER OF THE WEEK January 8, 2012, The Epiphany of the Lord At the Mass during the Day O God, who on this day re-vealed your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star, grant in your mercy that we, who know you already by faith, may be brought to behold the beauty of your sublime glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: What can I do this week to come to know God better? I have the unhappy task of informing you that after eleven and a half years as pastoral associate at St. Hugh's, Fr. Hurd has been reassigned by Cardinal Wuerl. As of January 1, Fr. Hurd has been assigned to work with the new Anglican Ordinariate that is responsible for all the Episcopal parishes in the United States and Canada that are seeking entrance into the Catholic Church. Fr. Hurd will also step down as director of the Office of the Permanent Diaconate for the Archdiocese of Washington, a position he has held for six years. Father and his family will continue to live in Alexandria, Virginia, and he remains a priest of the Archdiocese of Washing-ton. The Archdiocese has given him office space at the Pastoral Center to do his work for the Anglican Ordinariate. His job, however, will require extensive travel and frequent trips to Houston, Texas, where the ordinariate has its central offices. Given his background as a former Episcopal priest and his administrative and pastoral experience, it is not surprising that the new Ordinariate would request his services. He is being "loaned" to the Ordinariate, at least initially, for a period of three years. Please keep Father and his family in your prayers. I will speak with Father to determine a date when we can all get together to say our goodbyes and show him our appreciation for his many years of ministry at St. Hugh's. I will let you know as soon as I have the date. Meanwhile, you might want to drop Father a note of congratulation. Notes and cards can be sent to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center, P.O. Box 29260, Washington, DC, 20017. It is unlikely that the Archdiocese will be sending us a replacement for Fr. Hurd. Fortunately, the Dominican fathers from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington will continue to provide us with weekend assistance. Everything that needs to be covered will be covered. But, without doubt, Father will be missed very much. Yours in Christ, Father Walter P.S. As we reach the conclusion of the Christmas season, I wish to thank those parishioners who made a special effort to make the season festive, especially all those who donated flowers for the sanctuary and food and gifts for the poor, those who deco-rated the church, and those who served at the liturgies. A special word of thanks to our wonderful choir who provided us with such beautiful and inspiring music. May the graces of the Christmas season enrich us through the New Year 2012.

Feast of the Week Baptism of the Lord January 9

The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord on January 9 this year. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves", He was absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world". Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit de-scended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heav-ens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin. A Prayer for the Feast Day Almighty, eternal God, when the Spirit descended upon Jesus at his baptism in the Jordan, you revealed him as your own beloved Son. Keep us, your children born of water and the Spirit, faithful to our calling. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Activities for the Feast of the Baptism of Christ This is a wonderful day to recall to mind and renew our baptismal vows, and to celebrate the wonderful gift God has given us. Invite your children's godparents to drop in and take part in the day's festivities. Directions Bring out the baptismal gowns if you have saved them. Reminisce about each child's baptismal day, which is his or her rebirth in Christ. With godparents and family gathered in the living room, light the children's baptismal candles, or light a holy candle for each child. When the candles are ready, the father presents one to each child and prays as the Church did at baptism: “You have become a new creation, and have clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity. With your family and friends to help you by word and example, bring that dignity unstained into the ever-lasting life of heaven. Receive this burning light. This light is entrusted to you to be kept burning brightly. Safeguard your baptism by a blameless life. Keep the Commandments of God, that when our Lord shall come to claim His own, you may be worthy to greet Him, with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom. Amen.” Grown-ups and children repeat together their baptismal vows: “I _________, promise to reject Satan, and all his works and empty promises. Then recite the Apostles Creed, which repeats the basic beliefs of our faith: I believe in God the Father almighty. Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was con-ceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He de-scended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the Holy Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and life everlasting. Amen.” Then follows a Christmas song. This ceremony takes only a few minutes, but leaves a memory that lasts a lifetime and builds a sense of security in children. It also focuses their attention on the wonderful gift of Baptism. Prayer Corner Did you make a New Year’s resolution to be more atten-tive to prayer? Many of us have, and very often we find ourselves at a loss for words to say. Certainly, the Lord knows the depths of our hearts, and very often words are not even necessary. Below is a prayer attributed to Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, 1801-1890. Place it by your bedside as a way to close the day and hush your busy world. O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is one. Then in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.
