THE WIND AND THE SEA Living along the shores of Lake Superior—the “big lake,” as the locals call it—you can often hear the ad-vice, “Respect the lake; don’t take it for granted.” Peo-ple who know Lake Superior respect its power and watch out for its many moods. Sunken ships and boats crushed into kindling are testimonies to what the lake can do. The readings of this Sunday evoke our memo-ries of the lake, of the mighty Mississippi River, or of the ocean itself. Who but God can control these mighty waters and set limits to their advance? The lake de-scribed in today’s Gospel was a body of water subject to sudden storms and churned into dangerous waves by terrible winds. But these mighty agents are subject to God. EL VIENTO Y EL MAR Los que conocen bien el Lago Superior le tienen un saludable respeto, y siempre están alerta sobre sus ca-prichosos cambios de ánimo. Muchos barcos hundidos y muchos botes hechos astillas son testigos de lo que el lago puede hacer cuando está de mal humor. Las lectu-ras de este domingo nos evocan memorias de ese lago, del poderoso río Mississippi o del océano mismo. ¿Quién, fuera de Dios, podrá controlar esas aguas po-derosas, o imponerles límites, diciendo “Hasta aquí llegarás”? WAKE UP CALL TO PARENTS “Stay sober and alert. Your opponent the devil is prowl-ing like a roaring lion looking for someone to de-vour” (1 Peter 5:8). As bad as the COVID-19 pandemic has been, there is actually a worldwide pandemic far more widespread and more deadly…deadly to the mind and the soul. It is the scourge of pornography. Pornography is much more than it was when most of us were children when it was lim-ited to dirty magazines. Now anyone with a smartphone has access to it and the material is even more vile. It is a global mental and spiritual health crisis. Not only is the making and viewing of such material gravely immoral, viewing it can easily become addictive. Scientists have demonstrated that pornography use can be more addic-tive than heroine and children are getting hooked on it at very young ages. Parents need to be aware that the chances of your chil-dren being exposed to pornography are very high. Ac-cording to a 2020 survey by the British Board of Film Classification, the majority of children are exposed by the age of 13, with many as young as seven! It is estimat-ed that of youths aged 14-18, 84% of males and 57% of females have been exposed to pornography. Such forms of “entertainment” are extremely harmful. Many of the so-called “actors” are actually victims of human trafficking. And all of them are someone’s daughter or son, created in the image of God. Yet they have been reduced to an object to satisfy the lust of oth-ers. Pope St. John Paul II said, “There is no dignity when the human dimension is eliminated from the person. In short, the problem with pornography is not that it shows too much of the person, but that it shows far too little”. It is harmful to those who view it. Firstly, it is gravely sinful for those who view it with full knowledge and consent. It becomes even more harmful and disruptive to the lives of those who get addicted to it. It negatively impacts relationships and marriages. What is seen cannot be unseen. More and more parents are allowing young children to have smartphones and similar devices. While such tech-nology is not bad in itself, it can too easily become a pathway to addiction and evil. Parents need to be aware of this. “Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the pro-duction and distribution of pornographic materi-als.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2354)

LLAMADO A LOS PADRES "Mantente sobrio y alerta. Tu oponente el diablo está mer-odeando como un león rugiente en busca de alguien para devorar" (1 Pedro 5:8). Por muy mala que haya sido la pandemia de COVID-19, en realidad hay una pandemia mundial mucho más extendida y más mortal... mortal para la mente y el alma. Es el azote de la pornografía. La pornografía es mucho más de lo que era cuando la mayoría de nosotros éramos niños cuando se limitaba a las revistas sucias. Ahora cualquier persona con un teléfono inteligente tiene acceso a él y el material es aún más vil. Es una crisis de salud mental y espiritual global. No sólo es la fabricación y visualización de este material gravemente inmoral, verlo puede llegar a ser fácilmente adictivo. Los científicos han demostrado que el consumo de pornografía puede ser más adictivo que la heroína y los niños se están enganchando a ella a edades muy tempranas. Los padres deben ser conscientes de que las posibilidades de que sus hijos estén expuestos a la pornografía son muy altas. Según una encuesta del 2020 de la Junta Británica de Clasificación de Películas, la mayoría de los niños están expuestos a la edad de 13 años, ¡muchos con tan solo siete años! Se estima que de los jóvenes de 14 a 18 años, el 84% son hombres y el 57% de las mujeres han estado expuestos a la pornografía. Tales formas de "entretenimiento" son extremadamente dañinas. Muchos de los llamados "actores" son en realidad víctimas de la trata de personas. Y todos ellos son hijas o hijos de alguien, creados a imagen de Dios. Sin embargo, han sido reducidos a un objeto para satisfacer la lujuria de los demás. El Papa San Juan Pablo II dijo: "No hay digni-dad cuando se elimina la dimensión humana de la persona. En resumen, el problema con la pornografía no es que muestre demasiado de la persona, sino que muestra demasiado poco". Es perjudicial para quienes lo ven. En primer lugar, es gravemente pecaminoso para aquellos que lo ven con pleno conocimiento y consentimiento. Se vuelve aún más dañino y perturbador para las vidas de aquellos que se vuelven adictos a ella. Impacta negativamente las relaciones y los matrimonios. Lo que se ve no puede ser invisible. Cada vez más padres están permitiendo que los niños pequeños tengan teléfonos inteligentes y dispositivos simi-lares. Si bien dicha tecnología no es mala en sí misma, puede convertirse fácilmente en un camino hacia la adic-ción y el mal. Los padres deben ser conscientes de esto. "La pornografía consiste en eliminar los actos sexuales reales o simulados de la intimidad de los miembros de la pareja, con el fin de mostrarlos deliberadamente a terce-ros. Ofende contra la castidad porque pervierte el acto conyugal, la entrega íntima de los cónyuges entre sí. Aten-ta gravemente a la dignidad de sus participantes (actores, vendedores, público), ya que cada uno se convierte en un objeto de placer básico y beneficio ilícito para los demás. Sumerge a todos los que están involucrados en la ilusión de un mundo de fantasía. Es una ofensa grave. Las autori-dades civiles deberían prevenir la producción y distribu-ción de materiales pornográficos. (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica 2354)

Prayer for Safety in Hurricane Season O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your

children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its for-mer quietude. You are still the Master of the land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control; the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy and overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we may walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Oh, Dios, Maestro de este mundo que pasa, escucha las humildes voces de tus hijos. El Mar de Galilea obedeció su orden y regresó a su antigua quietud; Tu sigues siendo el Maestro de la tierra y el mar. Vivimos a la sombra de un peligro sobre el cual no tenemos control. El Golfo, como un gigante provocado y enojado, puede despertar de su aparente letar-go, sobrepasar sus límites convencionales, invadir nuestra tierra y pro-pagar el caos y el desastre.
