PARENT NEWSLETTER January 2013
Inclement Weather
As we approach the winter months, we occasion-ally get into bad weather situations that may cause the school district to delay the opening of school, dismiss school early, shorten bus routes
in the higher elevations or close school altogether. In such cases, the school district will send out a call via our automated phone service. The information will also be announced on Portland TV and radio stations,
including our local station, 1600 KOHI.
Weather Related Late Start Days
If weather or other emergency necessitates a
late start of school, please keep students
home rather than have them come to school
before the day starts. School will start at
10:20 a.m. on two-hour late start days, there
is no early morning supervision at the school
on these days.

NWOC League Honors a SHHS Athlete
St. Helens High School was honored to have Andrew
Gray, a senior football player, selected and unanimously
voted to be the Northwest Oregon Conference represen-
tative to the National Football Foundation Scholar Ath-
lete Awards Banquet. This was the 52nd
annual event hosted by the Portland Chap-
ter. The NFF is a nationwide organization
that promotes football as a beneficial, inte-
gral and wholesome part of the educational
process at schools and colleges throughout the coun-
try. Andrew was chosen as a finalist in the Linemen
category and received a $1,000 scholarship for his out-
standing emphasis as both a scholar and an athlete. The
banquet was attended by Andrew’s parents, Tim and
Cathy, and brother Christopher, as well as the football
coaching staff to help him celebrate this achieve-
ment. Guest speakers were Neil Lomax and Joey Har-
rington. Congratulations to Andrew Gray and the St.
Helens Football Team for this honor.

Financial Aid for College
It is often an accepted fact that higher education is costly;
however, before students pay for college out-of-pocket or
consider not enrolling due to cost, they should find out if
they qualify for financial aid. There are numerous types of
aid (grants, loans, work study, etc.) that come from several
sources (federal government, state government, institu-
tions, etc.), but they all have one thing in common: they
use the FAFSA to determine students’ eligibility.
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
uses a student’s and their parents’ financial information to
evaluate the student’s financial need. The greater need
that a student has the more likely they will qualify for
funds that will assist them in paying for college.
To ensure that a student does not miss out on money that
will help them further their education, graduating seniors
should submit their FAFSA by January 15th. The applica-
tion is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov along with
instructions that take the student through the application
process. However, if students and parents are looking for
additional assistance, they can receive help from financial
aid specialists on January 5th at Portland Community Col-
lege’s Rock Creek Campus. This event is not
limited to prospective PCC students; rather, they
extend the invitation to all college-bound stu-
dents. Visit www.pcc.edu/resources/tuition-fees/
financial-aid/day/index.html to find out further
details of the event including what students should bring
with them in order to complete the FAFSA.
If you have questions about the FAFSA or any other
higher education related questions, don’t hesitate to e-mail
Naomi Calkins at [email protected].
