Dear Friends

Over the months (16 now, by my reckoning!)

during which I have been writing these articles,

I have gradually evolved a routine. In recent

months, the first thing I have done (after literally

praying for inspiration) has been to check what

was the theme of my article in the same month

last year, so that I can avoid repeating myself.

On re-reading my article for March 2019, however,

I realise that this may not be quite so easy this month. The theme

underlying what I wrote then was “continuity”, and of course we are as

anxious to preserve continuity in our church and in our lives as we were

then.

In some ways, it is difficult to believe that our “vacancy”, “interregnum”

whatever we care to call it, has now lasted almost 18 months, since Philip

left us for Frodingham. By the time you read these words, at the beginning

of March, we may have received news that our period of waiting is about

to come to an end, and may even have a date for it to do so. I say “we

may” – only time will tell, and the only certainty is that the news will come

at some stage.

Whenever it does, our first reaction will naturally be one of rejoicing, of

gratitude for what has been prepared for us. But then we should also give

thanks for the work of so many who have helped to steer us successfully

through an incredibly busy and fruitful period – a far from “vacant” one,

in that sense.

Each one of us needs to reflect and give thanks that we have been able,

both individually and collectively, to meet the challenges and grasp the

opportunities of this period. We need to resolve that we will take

forward from it so much that we have learned, so much that we have

done, which should underlie and inform our work to bring in God’s

kingdom in this place. This brings us back to “continuity”, in fact, for

there is so much also from the past that we must continue to cherish,

and on which we must continue to build.

No doubt much will be said and written on this theme in the days, weeks,

months to come, for we are being presented with a priceless opportunity.

The View from the (vacant) Rectory

Page 4: St. Guthlac’s Churchlincoln.ourchurchweb.org.uk/marketdeeping/docstore/287.pdf · “Go and make disciples of all nations” March 8 th Prayer: Jesus’s own prayer life and his

But within every opportunity lies a challenge, and we shall have to ask our-

selves, “are we up to meeting this challenge?”

Of course we are. We have proved this over the last year and more, and

as we move forward, full of hope and expectation, let us remember that

the best guarantee of continuity is found in the words of St Paul when he

tells his Christian friends in Rome, in one of the Bible’s most resonant

passages, that he is “convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor

rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor

depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the

love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

Sunday Evenings in Lent 2020

Following our custom, Evensong will be replaced by an Address followed

by Compline during Lent, at the usual time of 6pm. Our theme this year is

discipleship and we will explore this by looking at how Jesus made disciples

of his followers during his three year ministry and how they then went on

to found the early church.

March 1st The Great Commission: Matthew 28.19

“Go and make disciples of all nations”

March 8th Prayer: Jesus’s own prayer life and his teaching on prayer.

March 15th Teaching/Parables: Jesus’s interpretation of scriptures and

his use of parables in teaching.

March 22nd Healing: The way Jesus often used healing to reach out to

people and make them into followers.

March 29th Early Church Discipleship: How the first disciples formed

themselves into a church and brought others into the fold.

April 5th Our Discipleship: In the light of the previous weeks’

sessions what can we learn about our own discipleship and

how can we put it into practice in our daily lives?

While there is a developmental thread running through the six weeks you do not need

to commit to attending all the sessions, as each one is independent and will be led by

a different member of the ministry team. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Lent Study Group

Ash Wednesday will almost certainly have been and gone by the time

you read this but there is plenty of Lent left and this year’s course will

be looking at some of the themes associated with Lent and Holy Week.

Rather than use a published course this year we will use the time to

study some key passages in the Bible, to discuss the issues raised and to

pray for ourselves, our parish and the world. The sessions will be held in

church from 2pm and the course will last for five weeks.

The dates, topics and Bible passages which will form

the basis for each week’s study are given below.

Wednesday March 4th: Temptation: Matthew 4.1–11

Wednesday March 11th: Repentance: Matthew 4.12–17

Thursday March 19th: Hypocrisy: Mark 11.15-8 and 12.38–40

Thursday March 26th: Fellowship: Luke 22.14–20

Wednesday April 1st: Suffering: Mark 14.32-35 and Psalm 22.14–18

Talks at Teatime

This month we meet on Sunday 29th March

at Anne Guthrie’s home, 7 Sutton’s Lane,

Deeping Gate. We will start at the earlier

time of 3.30pm so we can all get back in time

for the Lent Address and Compline at 6pm.

The speaker is Mike Berners-Lee whose talk

is entitled “There is no Planet B: A handbook

for the make or break years”. If you are

interested in coming along, please let Kate or

Anne know, especially if you would need a lift to be able to do so.

Feeding the world, climate change, biodiversity, antibiotics, plastics,

inequality, fake news - the list of concerns for the Anthropocene seems

endless. Mike Berners-Lee explores how the big picture fits together,

thinks practically and asks what on Earth should we do? Mike is a

sustainability expert, professor at Lancaster University and the author of

three acclaimed books.

This month sees two Mothers’ Union

events. The first is our regular

monthly meeting on Thursday 19th

in the Green School at 7.30pm when

Greg Guthrie will be coming to talk to us. Greg is a coastal engineer and

so he knows better than many the effects that climate change, in particular

rising sea levels, are having and will have on the UK. While many of our

current members may not be there to witness the most profound changes,

our children and grandchildren will, and so this is a topic of concern to us.

Everyone is welcome to come along to hear what Greg has to tell us.

The other event this month is the cluster banner service to mark Lady Day

which will be on Wednesday 25th at 2.30pm in St Andrew’s Church West

Deeping. We hope that this will be less eventful than last year’s service at

St Guthlac’s, when the banners performed a slow motion topple ending up

on our organist’s head! (Apologies yet again Peter.)

As anticipated, January’s AGM was calm, orderly and uncontroversial.

Revd Canon David Staples presided at our Eucharist and delivered a short

homily after which he chaired the AGM. The committee was re-elected

with the only change being Chris Gaughan taking over from Hazel Pullen as

treasurer. Thanks go to Hazel for her work over the last 6 years keeping

our finances in order.

There are a few spare copies of the programme at the back of church, do

take one and turn up to any meetings that pique your interest. You do not

have to be a member to attend, all we ask is £1 as a contribution towards

the cost of hiring the Green School.

Shirley Waller

We were sad to hear of the death of our friend Shirley Waller, known to

us all as the lady with the guide dog. Shirley was born in Wales and had

sight problems as a schoolgirl, though she didn’t become blind till she was

in her forties. However, she coped admirably with everything life threw

at her, including bringing up a total of seven children, four of her own and

three belonging to her second husband. She also survived two bouts of

cancer. Over the years she raised large amounts of money for Guide Dogs

for the Blind, was active in many clubs and societies and was always ready

for an outing especially if it involved tea and cake with the Mothers’ Union!

We shall miss her greatly. DH.

Churchwardens’ Notes

We hope everyone enjoyed the Confirmation Service on the 2nd February.

It was fantastic to see so many people there to support the 10 members

of our congregation who were confirmed by Bishop Nicholas. We offer

our congratulations to Emily, Keith, Stephanie, Mandy, Angela, Grace,

Andrew, El, Gabs and Ed on reaching this important step on their journey

of faith.

The process of appointing our new Rector continues following on from

the interviews that took place in December. Those of you who were able

to attend the confirmation service will have heard Bishop Nicholas assure

us that the process for appointing our new Rector is progressing well. We

hope to have more news for you in the near future. The fault with one of

the Church boilers has now been repaired by our Heating Contractor.

Fortunately, the repair was quite straightforward.

Since the last Churchwardens’ Notes our Architect has carried out the

Quinquennial Inspection. The Architect’s initial report has thankfully not

found any major faults. There are a couple of locations on the roof which

require the wood under the lead to be replaced. The architect has also

recommended improving the access to the top of the tower. At the

moment this involves clambering around the bells, lowering a ladder, and

then ascending using it. This is quite a dangerous process and the architect

is going to propose a way in which the access can be improved.

Our thanks go to Anne and Kate for the rearrangements they’ve made in

the baptistery - you can see how the children are enjoying the space now!

As ever, if you have any questions on

matters regarding the vacancy or anything

else, please speak with either of us.

Ladies Guild

We are now looking forward to our quiz which is coming

up in the first week of this month on Saturday 7th March.

If you still wish to join in, either bringing a team or to

come as an individual and get yourself signed up to a team,

contact Julie Bacon on 342737 as soon as possible and she

will endeavour to fit you in.

Later this month on Tuesday 24th we have our regular meeting and our

speaker is Chris Carr whose talk is entitled 'An Abundance of Riches -

The Spice Trade' which sounds fascinating. Come along to the Green

School for an 8pm start and you will be most welcome.

At the end of January members enjoyed a post-Christmas meal at the

Waggon and Horses, Langtoft organised by Gwen Didlick. There was

much talk, laughter and a free raffle interrupted by plenty of eating of a

hearty meal, enjoyed by all.

The next day some of our group attended the funeral of Kathy Davies

which was held at Grantham. As mentioned last month, she was the wife

of Canon Davies who was our Rector for 24 years from 1962 and she

founded Ladies Guild which still flourishes. Family plus friends and

colleagues from her long life spoke of her and her many achievements.

She had such an interesting life - see article by Ted Roberts on page 14.

Please contact Kay Roberts on 349021 if you are interested in

learning more about our regular meetings and activities.

THE PIONEERING DAYS OF THE MOTHERS’ UNION IN

MARKET DEEPING EXACTLY ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO

This elegantly dressed lady, Ellen Ashby, was the

driving force behind the establishment of the Mothers’

Union in Market Deeping one hundred years ago on

March 20th 1920. She was the wife of the Rector,

Reverend Paul Ashby, and had been very active in the

affairs of the church and parish ever since their arrival

in 1910. The First World War gave her an important

leading role, particularly when the Rector was at the

front line serving as a chaplain in the army.

The minutes record that “a meeting was held in the

Rectory at 3 o’clock to form a branch of the Mothers’

Union, the aims of which were fully explained by Mrs

Russell Walker, daughter of Mrs Wilberforce, the

head of the Mothers’ Union. She spoke most

eloquently and convincingly and, as a result, 56 gave

their names in and of those 48 were duly admitted on

Thursday April 15th and the others were unable to

attend but were admitted later. Ellen M Ashby.”

In the Parish Magazine Reverend Ashby

wrote “Naturally the working of the

branch…falls upon Mrs Ashby and I

have personally but little to do with

it….in our last parish, Mrs Ashby

founded and ran a large and flourishing

branch, some of the Mothers coming

more than 5 miles to the meetings.”

At the July meeting the committee was

elected as follows: Mrs Fox (Treasurer),

Mrs Ashby (Enrolling Member and

Secretary), Mesdames Benson, D’Arcy,

Holland, Kay, Loweth, F Otter, Parker

and Pick. Mrs Paul and Mrs Kilborn

kindly undertook to distribute the

Mothers’ Union Magazine every quarter.”

So the branch was born…….find out more on the next page about

what happened in August 1921! Where were they going?

11

A SUMPTUOUS TEA IN THE RECTORY: 29th JANUARY 1921

About 50 members of the Mothers’ Union were entertained at the

Rectory “to a most sumptuous tea which was much appreciated by all.

After tea the members adjourned to the Library where Mrs Ashby gave

an interesting account of the work and objects of the Society and was

hopeful for its growth and good influence in Market Deeping. The Girls’

Friendly Society and a few friends then gave a most enjoyable variety

entertainment consisting of songs, recitations, violin solo, dialogue, duet,

part songs, finishing with a play in three acts entitled “The Magic of Mrs

Blossom”. The entire programme was excellent in every way and reflected

great credit upon the performers and those who assisted in its

production. The costumes were of great interest many being early

Victorian. At the conclusion a vote of thanks was proposed to Canon and

Mrs Ashby for their kind hospitality, it being very evident that they had

spared no trouble or time for the comfort and enjoyment of their guests.”

WEDNESDAY JULY 13th 1921: OPERATION MOTHERS’ UNION!

“On Wednesday July 13th, an attack was made in the market square by

a large force of Mothers, some of whom were armed with babies and

perambulators. It soon became apparent that the cause of the outbreak

was a violent desire to capture a Progressive Bus which lay entrenched on

the shady side of the square. Under the able leadership of Mrs Ashby, the

Mothers soon reached their objective, and overwhelming all obstacles

took possession, compelling the driver and his mate whom they took

prisoners to convey them to Spalding and await further commands.

And now we will drop this military style and tell the tale

in a plain unvarnished way.”

This was Reverend Ashby writing in the parish magazine reflecting his

recent military experience in the First World War. The parish magazines

show that he was undoubtedly a real wordsmith with a great sense of

humour. The Mothers were going to a combined service in the parish

church of Spalding where they were addressed by the Bishop of Stafford.

Forty-four Market Deeping members wished to go and so some had to go

by train from St James Deeping Station and some cycled.

After the service “they repaired to the Rectory garden where tables were

arranged so that the Mothers from each parish were able to sit together

for tea….. After tea they walked about the town and saw friends and

bought things, and in due time again mounted the bus and arrived safely at

Market Deeping about 8.15pm, having to all accounts spent a very

enjoyable afternoon.” Heady days indeed!

Rise, take your mat and walk! John 5.1-9a

World Day of Prayer, formerly known as Women’s World

Day of Prayer, is an international, inter-church organisation

which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all

parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers.

• WDP is ecumenical: the largest ecumenical movement in the world, the

only one supported by Catholic and Protestant, Orthodox and Evangelical

churches.

• WDP is global: alive and well in more than 120 countries worldwide

• WDP is women-led: no longer ‘Women’s’ i.e. belonging to women, in

the same way as a church Women’s Fellowship or Women’s Own

magazine, but instead belonging to everyone. However, it is led by

women and is the women’s gift to the whole Church.

• But, above all, WDP is a prayer movement, a group of people for whom

prayer is fundamentally important and who know that prayer changes

things. There is no need to ask why we pray!

The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 120 countries. It begins in Samoa

and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world --- through

Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas before finishing in

American Samoa some 38 hours later.

This year the service has been created by the

women of Zimbabwe which is located in

Southern Africa and means 'House of Stones'.

A landlocked country, it lies between the

Limpopo River in the south and the mighty

Zambezi River in the north.

Harare is the capital city and also the seat of

government, while Bulawayo is the second

largest city. The country has

an estimated population of about sixteen million people and has sixteen

official languages:- English, Shona and Ndebele are the most widely used.

13

Major tourist attractions include the Victoria

Falls, which is considered one of the Seven

Wonders of the World; Hwange National

Park, a wildlife conservancy; and the Great

Zimbabwe Monument or ruins from which

the country derives its name.

The first interdenominational prayer

committee was set up in 1962; since then

those of different denominations have come together to pray and to plan

their work. The women follow the tradition of praying and helping the

needy in their communities, rotating the giving to those in need in the

different provinces as identified by the women locally.

The 2020 worship service is based on Jesus’ encounter with a person who,

although positioned for healing, had not acted upon the opportunities

given. Jesus asked, ‘Do you want to be made well?’

You are faced with this life-changing question. What are you going to do?

‘Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk,’ said Jesus. Our sisters from Zimbabwe

are taking Jesus’ encounter to be a call to act in love for peace and

reconciliation. The action verbs suggest that we should not be afraid to act

on the word of God. God is offering us the steps for personal and social

transformation.

We are empowered to take up

our mats. No more waiting

powerlessly on the mat. As

expressed in the WDP 2020

painting by Nonhlanhla Mathe,

let us give a healing hand to the

needy, let us embrace children

with love as their future is ahead,

and let us open our arms in joy as

the time to rise up has come.

This is the time for change!

Deeping Churches Together will hold their service on Friday 6th March at

2pm at St Guthlac’s Church. Refreshments will be served afterwards so

you can speak to people from other churches over a cup of tea. Everyone

is welcome and lifts can be arranged - please speak to Dorothy.

Kathy Davies

My first acquaintance with Market Deeping was in 1961 when we were

living in Peterborough and I was asked to come here and take Morning

Prayer on the Sunday after Christmas, the Rector, Revd. Leonard Piggot

having died on Boxing Day. It had been snowing hard and was bitterly

cold, as was the church. The congregation was a churchwarden, Roy

Mitchell, Jack Halford who had come out to pick me up, the organist and

me. After the service Roy said, 'come on, let's go over to the Rectory and

warm ourselves on the old man's sherry, he won't mind now'. The rectory

was even colder than the church and was in a deplorable state. It was so

bad I couldn't believe anyone could have lived there; I thought it would

take a very brave man (or couple) to agree to come here.

Little did I know that a year and nine months later I would be here with

Isabella and our young family and would meet and become very good

friends with that brave couple, David and Kathleen Davies. Kathy, a

Lincolnshire woman, served in the WRNS during the war and while in

Yarmouth her unit had suffered heavily in air raids. It was there she met

David, who was on his way to North Africa and then Italy, ending up in

the battle for Monte Cassino. They married on his return home, and

then, as Kathy said once, 'having fell in love with and married an army

officer, I ended up becoming a parson's wife.

They had been here just a year when we came here, and in that time had

worked wonders. There was a reasonable congregation and a children's

choir of about twenty; the Rectory had been transformed, at no small

expense to themselves and much hard work, into a home. David had been

much preoccupied with the church and parish. The village had started to

expand. The school (on three sites) needed a new building on a new site,

so he had a lot on his hands. Kathy was the practical person, and enabled

David to concentrate on parish matters by relieving him of more domestic

ones. She also, as Kay reported in last month's magazine, found the time

and energy to start up the Ladies Guild, still going strong.

Kathy gave this loving and selfless support right from the start of David's

ministry, and it continued, but perhaps to a lesser degree, when she was

able to be her own woman and follow her own interests. Over the years

many other clergy wives have done similarly and become unpaid curates,

and not always willingly or happily either. This ought not to have been to

the extent that it was, but the past is the past and cannot be changed.

I give thanks for the love and friendship of Kathy and David which has so

blessed the lives of Isabella and myself. Ted Roberts.

You Are Loved

When the road seems too long

When darkness sets in

When everything turns out wrong

And you can’t find a friend

Remember - you are loved.

When smiles are hard to come by

And you’re feeling down

When you spread your wings to fly

And can’t get off the ground

Remember - you are loved.

When time runs out before you’re through

And it’s over before you begin

When little things get you down

And you just can’t win

Remember - you are loved.

When your loved ones are far away

And you are on your own

When you don’t know what to say

When you’re afraid of being alone

Remember - you are loved.

When your sadness comes to an end

And everything is going right

May you think of family and friends

And keep their love in sight

A thank you for being loved.

May you see the love around you

In everything you do

And when troubles seem to surround you

May all the love shine through

You are blessed - You are loved.

Parish Electoral Roll

Anyone over the age of 16 years can be entered on the Church Electoral Roll,

which is quite separate from the civic one. If you wish to stand for election to

PCC you need to have been on the roll for 6 months at the time of election (the

exception being those under the age of 18 years at that time) and all sidespersons

should have their names entered. The Parish AGM and APCM will be held on

Sunday 26th April after the 10am service and the Roll will be open for additions

and amendments, between Sunday 29th March and Sunday 12th April. Forms will

be available at the back of Church, with a box to put them in when completed.

Please use block capitals for ease of recording and return your form as soon as

possible.

Those who regularly attend St Guthlac’s ought to be on the Roll as they can then

vote at the above meetings; it also gives us a clearer understanding of our

support. The total number listed is used to decide how many representatives we

can send to Diocesan Synod where many important decisions are taken and we

need to have our voice heard! So please enter your name on the Roll, whether

you come along every week, for special occasions only, or if you bring your

children to Vestry Group or Voyagers.

Julie Bacon (342737), our Electoral Roll Officer, will help with any queries.

Flower Displays and Easter Lilies

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to arrange flowers or offered financial donations to support our displays each week

in church. Thank you to Julie Bacon, Lynette Ford, Jean Jones and Gerry Smith who have covered January and February. There will

be no flowers during Lent but we look forward to the Easter displays, which as usual will feature lilies, which can be sponsored

in remembrance of loved ones.

Please look for the lists at the back of Church: on the first list add your name, with the number of lilies required; then add the relevant name(s) of those to

be remembered to the second list, using block capitals please to ensure correct spelling when the names are transferred to the display in the window

of remembrance.

The cost this year is £2.50 per lily for each person remembered and payment should be put in an envelope with your name and the number of lilies being

paid for clearly written on the outside. This can then be given to me, placed in the collection plate or put in the wall safe to the left of the main door.

Orders need to be placed by Palm Sunday, 5th April.

Many thanks - Anne Guthrie.

Prayer of the Month Lord Jesus Christ,

you have taught us

that what we do for the least of our brothers

and sisters we do also for you:

give us the will to be the servant of others

as you were the servant of all,

and gave up your life and died for us,

but are alive and reign, now and for ever.

Amen.
