A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP’S HOUSE Mass for the Sick and their Families, NHS Front-Line workers and those working in Social Care The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales recognise that this time of the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting every person in our countries. Those who are sick, and their families, are suffering many hardships of isolation from contact with those they love. Our front-line workers in hospitals and in care homes all over our lands are giving exceptional service to those who are vulnerable at this time. In order to show a spiritual solidarity with all those who are involved in the ways described above, each week from next Thursday, a Catholic Bishop will celebrate Mass in his Cathedral which will be live-streamed for people to join. This will take place every Thursday at 7.00 p.m. 23 rd April Cardinal Vincent Nichols Westminster Cathedral 30 th April Bishop Richard Moth Arundel Cathedral 7 th May Bishop Marcus Stock Leeds Cathedral 14 th May Bishop Robert Byrne CO Newcastle Cathedral 21 st May Bishop Mark Davies Shrewsbury Cathedral 28 th May Bishop Terence Drainey Middlesbrough Cathedral By visiting the Cathedral webpage or the Bishops’ Conference Webpage (cbcew.org.uk) links for the live- streaming of these Masses can be found. Also please note that Bishop Paul will be celebrating Mass each Thursday evening at 7.00 p.m. in the Cathedral. Unfortunately it will not be possible to live-stream this but it is good for us to know that it is taking place. He says that he will be back home in time to join the clap for the NHS at 8.00 p.m. ONE OF THE LOVELIEST STORIES OF THE GOSPELS is the story of how Jesus joined two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus “and their hearts burned inside them” when Jesus explained to them the Scriptures and they recognised the Lord at the breaking of bread. We, too, can experience God as we listen to His Word and partake of His bread. God knows that we need His spiritual nourishment for our journey through life. In our journey we are never alone. Jesus walks with us. He walks with us in our lack of understanding, our hurts, our bitterness, as He did with the two disciples. He asks us to surrender our difficulties into His hands and continue our journey. At times we can feel His presence with us, at other times we can’t. He is like the sun in the sky, which at times is big and bright and clearly visible but at other times it disappears behind a layer of cloud and seems to have vanished from the sky. So, too, in the low points of our journey, we should not be disturbed by the apparent absence of the Lord. We should, rather, use the opportunities to show Christ our trust that he is still walking with us and that He will console and heal us. For a journey, maps and road signs are useful but it is much better to have the guide himself, someone who has been there before and knows the way. “Jesus is that someone” who walks always with us. “All through life’s day, You walk with us, Lord but often we don’t recognise You for we are blinded by work and worry, doubt, confusion and fear and so you remain a stranger to us.” Before the day’s end we will ask many questions, experience many sorrows and disappointments and then, suddenly, whether we are young, middle-aged or old, we will find that night is approaching. In that moment we pray that, like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, our eyes will be opened and that we will recognise You. You will not vanish from our sight but stay with us to guide us to the Father’s House.

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP’S HOUSE

The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales recognise that this time of the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting every person in our countries.

ONE OF THE LOVELIEST STORIES OF THE GOSPELS is the story of how Jesus joined two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus “and their hearts burned inside them” when Jesus

THE DIOCESE OF LANCASTER

LOURDES PILGRIMAGE 2020

It is with a heavy heart and after great deliberation we inform you that due to the unprecedented global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 pilgrimage to Lourdes has been postponed and rescheduled to 23rd July 2021. This decision has been made in collaboration with Bishop Paul and our Tour Operator, Joe Walsh Tours.

We know this decision will be a huge disappointment to many, indeed it saddens us too. We hope to be able to come together in prayer during the time we should have been united in Lourdes - of course dependant on government restrictions.
