Pastor’s PonderingsPastor’s PonderingsPastor’s PonderingsPastor’s Ponderings I WAS JUST WONDERING

Recently, I was thinking about the state of our cathedral family and where we have been, where we are AND where we are go-ing, especially during this month of the Transfiguration of our Lord. I decided to review some of the articles I have put in the monthly newsletters. Wow! It reminded me of the fact that the arti-cles were chosen, written or borrowed and placed in the monthly newsletter for one real reason or another. They usually spoke to issues that had arisen or problems we may have faced as a family. The reality is that many of you enjoyed some of the articles. There were others who spent more time looking for typographical and grammatical errors than on the content. And to be honest, those of you who were looking for mistakes found them. This really speaks to my overall concern about where we have been and definitely to my concern about where we are RIGHT NOW! There was an article about a mother who went to a McDonalds and was really placed in a position to examine and put into practice her Christianity for the less fortunate. I had hoped it would encourage more of us to follow her example. Oh well. Then there was the article about the “Cart Full of Mirrors” which spent some time examining our preoccupation with everyone else’s human frailties, physical, spiritual and mental. It tried to encourage each of us to reflect on our own images before God and each other and our own personal weaknesses rather than those of the people we come in contact with on the street, in the workplace and, more specifically, here at church. But based on what I am seeing and feeling at this time, it appears that there was more time spent looking for typos and other errors than spending time reflecting on the content of the message. And that is where we were and actually where we are NOW, too. We seem to spend most of our time talking about each other, pushing our own personal agendas, on each other’s backs and at each other’s throats, displaying anything but our Orthodox Christianity. We have truly lost sight of our purpose which is to grow in Christ. If we did this, we would be offering an opportunity for others to see how we “dwell in unity” of purpose and faith so they might see this and want to be part of the Christian family and more specifically, our Christian family. So this is where we are. So where are we going? Well, based on our current mode of operation, we are on the fast track, the newly paved, four lane highway AWAY from God, headed somewhere other than HIS Kingdom. First of all, “a house divided against itself cannot stand”. “Any country that divides itself into groups that fight each other will not last very long. Any town or family that divides itself into groups that fight each other will fall apart.” So what should we do? We could use the example of the monastic community that was dwindling in number and began to treat each other as the Mes-siah as we read in the article entitled, “What Is Community”. That example didn’t cause the monks to divide into two so their numbers would increase. But it did give visitors a positive view of the sense of Christian community and many were encouraged by that example to become part of that loving, Christ centered community. Psalm 132 which is read during our Presanctified Liturgy during Great Lent includes this beautiful verse: “Behold, how good it is, and how pleasant, when brethren (brothers and sisters) dwell in unity. I was just wondering what would happen here at Saint George Cathedral if we truly had a sense of community and would learn to “dwell in unity”.

Thank You: The board would like to thank the ladies who help with fellowship during the year.

Community: The Anagennesis Ladies Society has generously donated to many organizations this year. Among

them are: The American Cancer Society, The American Red Cross, David's House in Lebanon, NH, The

Missions of OCMC, St. Michael's Home for the Elderly, The Granite Pathways, and The Child Advocacy

Center.

We also made the following purchases: a Scanner/Printer for our Cathedral office, many new

tablecloths for our Community Center, new desks for our Sunday School, gifts for our members who are in

nursing homes, and token gifts for our mothers and fathers in the community. We have also sponsored

some of our board members in the Breast Cancer Walks. We have a very active board who is extremely

motivated in working to better our community.

Glendi 2011: Cooking/Baking Schedule Please feel free to offer your help in any way you can. Cooking dates are now listed for Glendi. We

look forward to cooking with you, please feel free to join us anytime. We need YOUR help, and it is not just

for ladies, the men are welcomed as well. Volunteers needed. Please come for a couple of hours or stay for

the whole day, which ever you decide just know you are a vital part of our Glendi celebration. Cooking begins

at 9:00 a.m. in the Community Center. Morning coffee and lunch will be provided.

Sunday School NewsSunday School NewsSunday School NewsSunday School News It’s hard to believe that one month of summer vacation has already passed! Mark your calendars now so that you will remember that Sunday School will begin on September 25. That’s the week after Glendi for those of us who use “Glendi Time” to keep track of the seasons. The September newsletter will include the Sunday School Calendar. Registration forms and parental volunteer sign-up forms will be mailed directly to the students. Additional forms will be

available in the church office for new students. Some parents have already signed up to help out this coming year and I thank you for that. For those of you who haven’t made a com-mitment yet—it’s not too late. I’ll be looking for helpers for our various activities and also, classroom helpers. The work doesn’t pay much in dollars but the reward of working with our children is priceless!

Enjoy the last hurrah of summer because before we know it we’ll be back to school!
