Dear Parishioners,

I hope all is well! Recently I have received many questions about the reception of Holy Communion: that is, who can receive and who should refrain. To state it simply, only a fullyinitiated Catholic without any mortal sins is permitted to receive Jesus. This goes back to Saint Paul, who tells us in scripture that if we eat and drink unworthily, we condemn ourselves. The catechism calls this a sacrilege, that is, an additional mortal sin. This is why we offer confessions mostly on Saturday, and the Church recommends that we receive absolution once a month. Mortal sin includes missing Mass on Sunday or a holy day of obligation (unless one is sick), such as last week’s feast of the Ascension. It also includes living as if you are married with someone whom you did not mar-ry in the Church.

The above rule also applies to any other scenario in which a person is representing the Church, such as being a godparent or sponsor, or being a catechist or a liturgical minister. Sometimes people may ask me, “Why did you allow that person to receive Communion, etc.?” To offer a brief response, I rarely deny someone Com-munion when he or she comes up in line. Sometimes denial is clearly necessary, because it is obvious that they are not Catholic, or it is a rare case of a proabortion politician coming forward. Mostly, however, I try to pre-sume the best of each person, since I either do not know about one’s personal life, or they may have just gone to confession, with true repentance for past sins. Also, it happens often that people discuss their sins with me in confession, and I am under the seal, therefore incapable of showing any knowledge of one’s sins or even the pos-sibility that a couple may have decided to live “as brother and sister” while waiting for an annulment. In any of this, my intention is not to be judgmental we all have our sins and past mistakes but rather, to help people get right before the Lord and ultimately prepare for judgment day. I would soon like to offer another presentation on annulments the last one was successful and many of our parishioners are involved in the process.

God bless you, Fr. Chuck

Queridos feligreses,

Catholic Strong is a campaign that owes much of its theme to Pope Francis’ call on all of us to become Mis-sionary Disciples. This concept he first broached in his 2013 Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel).

“The Joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept His offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneli-ness. With Christ joy is constantly born anew. In this Ex-hortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to em-bark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s jour-ney in years to come.”

From there he tasked us to do more, to welcome more, to embrace more by becoming missionary disciples. ““I dream of a 'missionary option,' that is, a missionary im-pulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and sched-ules, language and structures can be suitably channeled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her selfpreservation.”

The Catholic Strong campaign, has at its core an emphasis on evangelization, to bring back those Catholics who have fallen away and to inspire nonCatholics to join us in a faith that is enthusiastic and joyful.

Through your support, we will create in both our parishes and the diocese new programs and initiatives to evange-lize to all who wish to find a home in our South Jersey Catholic community.

CATHOLIC STRONG CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

The Catholic Community of South Jersey continues to reaffirm its commitment to promote the healing, redemp-tive and teaching presence of Jesus Christ to those seek-ing solace, forgiveness and instruction. We have fol-lowed Christ’s invitation to love one another, to be a community of faith, and to share our gifts in a spirit of stewardship and gratitude.

As vital and active members of the Diocese of Camden wishing to make our contribution, we are beginning the Catholic Strong Campaign to provide resources needed to strengthen our parishes and Catholic education, expand our outreach and enhance our social services. A success-ful campaign will ensure the vitality of our faith commu-nities and ultimately meet the evolving needs of our Diocese.

Every parish will share in these efforts with an allocated goal. Our parish campaign target is to raise a minimum of $825,000, of which we will receive 70% [or a mini-mum of $577,500], that will go toward parish needs. We will receive 80% of all funds raised over our parish target. The funds will be used to address the following needs: Corpus Christi ChurchNew floor and plan to add seating

and refurbish pews $150,000

Saint Mary ChurchStained glass window restoration $125,000*

Hiring of a youth minister [$25,000/year for 5 years] $125,000

New roofs on Corpus Christi Church & Rectory $ 82,500*

Parish Center Parking Lot Restoration $ 40,000

New airconditioning units for Msgr. Rocco Hall $ 35,000

 Security Upgrades $ 20,000

We are asking our parish family to lend generous support to the campaign. As our current parishioners, we now call upon you to carry on the generosity, spirit and sacri-fice that filled the hearts of the men and women who have supported our parish and diocese throughout our history.

As we have been blessed, let us act as stewards by sup-porting the Catholic Strong campaign to preserve the es-sence of what we and all of the faithful within the greater Church in South Jersey are blessed to have and to ensure the Church’s presence in the lives of our children and grandchildren. Let us continue to show the power which blessed the first apostles to our parish and diocese. Your prayers, generosity, and sacrifice will ensure our success.

God Bless, Father Chuck
