In the Spirit of St. Francis…

In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU!

From the desk of Father James “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

My brothers and sisters in Christ, this week we celebrate in most of our Catholic Churches in the United States the solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Forty days after Jesus rose from the dead, after he appeared to many of the disciples, Jesus had to return to the Father. He returns to the Father so that he may send us the Advocate, the Para-clete.

We hear once again from Jesus, the call to go and make disciples, to baptize in the name of our Triune God, and to teach them the “way.” Yet, the words that strike us the most are the final words quoted above, “ I am with you al-ways.”

One of the things that I do in my spare time is read. At the rectory I have a nice simple patio in the back where I sit and often say my prayers and rosary every day (yes, year round, even in the cold.) I read many different types of books, non-fiction to fiction, religious themes to Stephen King. Recently I have read several books that speak to tech-nology and the effect that it has on society. Even though we are more connected than we have ever been in our lives, there is still such a great sense of aloneness. We are isolated behind computer screens and smart phones.

Jesus is indeed with us always. He is there, especially in the times in which we feel as though we are most alone and in most need of His presence. Think of the poem “Footprints in the Sand.”

Let us draw near to the fact that our Lord is with us and most importantly, let us draw near to the task of going out to the nations to make disciples. As we tell others about Jesus, they too will have the comfort of knowing that they are not alone. Not only will they have Jesus as their savior, they will also have a new family in Christ.

A few other points I would like to mention this weekend. . .

I want to thank everyone that helped make last weekend’s celebration of 1st Communion and Confirmation, wonder-ful and beautiful liturgies. We had an amazing group of kids that received Jesus’ Body and Blood for the first time as well as those that were sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit by Archbishop Sample. Thank you!! As our young peo-ple have been strengthened by these sacraments, may we too be reminded of the super-natural grace that we receive from these sacraments each day of our lives.

I also want to take a moment to share with you a few changes to our daily Mass schedule. During this past Lent and Easter season I have been celebrating Mass every Monday. After this coming Monday (Memorial Day, Mass 8:30 am) Deacon Bill will resume leading a communion service on Mondays at 12:05 pm. I will say Mass again on Mon-days starting in Advent.

We have had the custom of having Mass offered on the First Saturday of every month. This tradition will continue. In addition, starting June 2, I will offer Mass here at St. Francis every Saturday at 8:30 am. This will be carried out for the foreseeable future. Being able to attend Mass during the week, is truly an amazing gift. Often because of work, many cannot come at the usual morning time. But since I arrived I have added a Mass at 6:00 pm on Wednes-days and now Saturday morning at 8:30 am. So now there is a great variety of times for people to come to Mass dur-ing the week.

Also, the First Saturday of the month, I will be leading the Rosary at 8:00 am in the Church and during Mass, every First Saturday of the Month, I will be offering the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Please come and join us!

To Vince & Alec Meichtry for fixing a couple of pews in the church.

To the Gill family for the beautiful roses they left for the chapel.

To Denny Devlin for mowing the field by the old hall.

To Michael Wanner, Violet Franco and Angelina Conrow who came early to help set up for the Confir-mation reception.

To Lori Oliver, Jennifer Mirek, Tammy Mathews and Amy Cookson who worked hard to keep the Con-firmation reception running smoothly and cleaned up afterwards.

Last Sunday, May 21 at the 5:00 pm Mass, thirty five teens received the Sacrament of Confirmation. They have been preparing to be fully initiated into the Catholic faith all year. We were blessed to have Archbishop Sample here with us to celebrate the Confirmation Mass. Please continue to pray for these young men and women as they continue their journey as Christians.

Pantry Needs: cereal, canned beans, pasta, soup, dia-pers, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap Garden Needs: manure (no horse please) Volunteer Needs: garden volunteers for spring/summer No Hope Diner this weekend True progress is whatever leads us to God. Decline leads us away. We want true progress. True progress unites, eventually. Sowing the seeds of division is Satan’s occu-pation, which may seem to be a fast-growing industry. But Christians remain hopeful. We achieve unity when we seek the common good, “the general welfare of the entire human family." It’s not just about “me” but about “us.” Division is the outcome when the philosophy is “me first, and others like me.” Jesus’ commandment to “love your neighbor” did not conclude with “but me first.” God is light. Satan is darkness. True progress is whatever leads us to the light. Decline moves us away from the light and towards the darkness. The Holy Spirit gently takes our hand and guides us to the light. First, we must listen to the Holy Spirit, discern the Holy Spirit’s mes-sage (if the message is to avoid the good and seek the evil, it’s not the Holy Spirit), trust in the Holy Spirit, and choose the light. Keeping Jesus’s commandments is the light: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth.” True progress is the path we take as we keep Jesus’s commandments to love God and neighbor. It is a journey we take with good cheer and abundance of hope, with kindness of heart and gentleness of tongue, with our companion the Holy Spirit. Courtesy of the Office of Life, Justice, and Peace

“Until the voiceless in the womb are granted the same right to life as those of us privileged to see the light of day, we will walk in the darkness of these terrible violations of human dignity. If we will not recognize the dignity of the most vulnerable among us, violence in society will continue and recogni-tion of the dignity of every human person will never be realized. A society that allows the destruction of its own children in the womb can in no way call itself civilized. Human dignity, God alone bestows it. We are called to simply respect it.” ~Archbishop Alexander K. Sample, Catholic Sentinel Sunday, May 28 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 805 For children under age 2, malnutrition can weaken the immune system, making them more susceptible to dying from com-mon illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and ma-laria.
