Red Cross blood drive

The next blood drives for the American Red Cross at St.

Francis Borgia will be Thursdays, June 6 and Sept. 19 from

1-6:30 p.m. Online sign-up for June is now open! Please visit

www.RedCrossBlood.org to choose a time that works for

your schedule.

Our volunteers assist the Red Cross staff with registration

and hospitality. If you would be interested in having your

name added to the helpers list or learning more, please contact

Diane Carlson at 262-618-2408. Assisting as a volunteer is a

great way to support the blood drive efforts if you’re unable to

donate blood.

These blood drives are collaborative events with St. Joseph

Parish in Grafton. We thank our Grafton friends for their sup-

port and assistance! We hope to see you at a future drive!

Are your feet beautiful?

The Substance Addiction Ministry (SAM) Core Team in-

vites you to a faith sharing discussion on Thursday, Apr. 11

from 7-8 p.m. in the church hall.

They will meditate on the passage from Romans 10: 11-15:

“How beautiful the feet of those who bring good news!” and

discuss how actions, not just words, are needed to spread the

Gospel message and reach those who are afflicted with or af-

fected by addiction.

You are also invited to join the SAM Prayer Support Group

in the church from 6:15-6:45 p.m. to pray for those touched by

addiction.

For more information about this program or about SAM,

please contact Pat Franklin at [email protected].

Prayers for our parish family

Died in Christ

Loretta Schommer, age 96

Please pray for our fellow parishioners

Please call the parish office with your requests for parish-

ioners who are ill or in need of prayers to be published in the

bulletin - both the printed and online versions. Privacy laws

require that all requests be initiated by a member of the imme-

diate family.

Names will be published in a total of 12 bulletins (about

three months). If at the end of that time, the person wishes to

remain on the list, he/she will need to call the parish office and

share that request.

The bulletin prayer list only includes the names of parish-

ioners. Names of non-parishioners, friends and neighbors can

be added to our prayer chain. To be added to the list, please

contact Katie in the parish office at 262-377-1070, ext. 221 or

[email protected].

Glimpses: The history of St. Francis Borgia

As St. Francis Borgia Parish approaches its 175th anniversary (1844-

2019), we will share some short articles about our congregation's growth

through the 1800s into the present. Thanks to Marty Moore for his

diligent research for these articles.

Early Clergy

In earlier years, travel was limited and ethnic groups

tended to settle within their ethnic communities. Ease in

communication and familiarity with their homeland and cul-

ture drew the groups together - including the Irish commu-

nity of our parish founders in the Newland area. Congrega-

tions were typically led by clergy of the same ethnicity, who

understood their customs and language.

The first Catholic church in our area was St. Francis

Xavier, which later became a mission of St. Joseph-Grafton.

These congregations were served by European circuit-riding

priests from Milwaukee who spoke their language.

The St. Francis-Newland Congregation was served by 15

consecutive Irish priests until 1916. Following World War I,

our congregation became a blend of Irish, German and other

groups. Then, with a common English language, as time

passed, the "ethnic" parishes faded away - blending into

what became, in many cases, a single congregation of mixed

ethnicity.

Some ethnic congregations still remain, serving Hispanic,

Filipino and other communities. But most have now blended

into mixed cultures celebrating together and sometimes inter-

jecting the unique cultural atmosphere and traditions of the

ethnic groups from which they emerged.

Vacation Bible Camp volunteers needed

Fun loving and energetic youth and adults will be needed

as emcees, crew leaders and station leaders for VBC! If you

would like to help lead kids and youth in a week long, fun-

filled faith adventure, email or call Mrs. Crom at

[email protected] or 262-377-1070, ext. 226 or Mrs.

Mikkelson at [email protected] or 262-377-1070,

ext. 243.

Parents of first graders...

First Reconciliation and First Eucharist are usually cele-

brated during the child’s second grade year. Because of the

importance of these two sacraments and the amount of infor-

mation the child must learn, preparation begins during first

grade or sooner.

Preparation for these sacraments can be done through St.

Francis Borgia Christian Formation classes or St. Francis Bor-

gia School.

Parents who home school their children should contact

Chris Crom, director of Child Ministry, at 262-377-1070, ext.

226 or [email protected].

Chris is also the contact person for any other questions

parents might have. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
