THE CHOSEN REMNANT

Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament prophets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of themselves. He admonishes them to remember that Christ has given them all they have. Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.”

In addition to Crisis Care and Follow-Up Care, Stephen Ministers provide their care receivers with Chronic Care. This is care for a long-term problem. Chronic illness or chronic suffering of any kind can be like a crisis that never ends. Chronic sufferers have to learn to live with problems that can detract significantly from their quality of life. Chronic sufferers experience unique problems. Research has indicated that suffering a chronic, incurable condition can be similar to being treated to chemical dependency. A stigma can be attached to being chronically ill. People can feel that the sufferer may have somehow brought this on his/her self. Health care providers often provide inadequate care in chronic cases, because more attention is given to acute, short-term cases wherein the patient is ill, recovers more quickly, and resumes his/her normal life making it easier for all concerned. Chronic sufferers are usually long-term care receivers sometimes over many years. In addition to an illness or handicap they often suffer isolation and loneliness since they are confined to their home or a long-term care facility. Former friends may stop visiting because they find the situation difficult to deal with. The chronic sufferer then feels rejected, hurt, angry, and deeply sad or a revolt. Persons in need of Chronic Care include those who are: Disabled, Aged, In nursing homes, Homebound, Experiencing chronic pain such as arthritis, Living with degenerative diseases. Please contact us at 909-553-5106 to speak to CC for more information.

In our last Baby Bottle fund raiser we collected $4800 and we set a check to the Aldeana Hinkle Pregnancy and Family Resource Center here in Yucaipa for $3876. In return we received a gracious thank you note from them reading as follows: “Once again you have overwhelmed me with your generosity. I am humbled by the love and support you give us. The money you raised for our center will keep our doors open for quite a while. It was just what we needed to pull ourselves up. We used some of the money to make sure our little ones had Christmas presents. Thank you so very much and God Bless you all. Serving Him, Linda Brown.”

Sierviéndole a El, Linda Brown."
