Weekend at Birney’s Feast of the Epiphany While the hustle and bustle of Christmas ends for many

people on Dec. 26, throughout Chrisan history Christmas

lasts for 12 days – all the way unl Jan. 6. This feast marking

the end of Christmas is called “Epiphany.”

Epiphany celebrates the revelaon that Jesus was the Son

of God. It focuses primarily on this revelaon to the Three

Wise Men, but also in his bapsm in the Jordan and at the

wedding at Cana.

“You can’t understand Navity without Epiphany.” The

revelaon of Christ as the Son of God – both as an infant and

at his bapsm – illuminate the mysteries of the Christmas

season. Our human nature is blinded because of sin and

we’re unable to see as God sees. God reveals to us the reve-

laon of what’s going on.”

Fr. Hezekias Carnazzo,

Director of the Instute for Catholic Culture

Origins of Epiphany The celebraon of Epiphany (which comes from Greek,

meaning “revelaon from above has developed its’ own tra-

dions and liturgical significances. “The Feast of Epiphany, is

a very, very early feast,” said Fr. Carnazzo. “It predates the

celebraon of Christmas on the 25th.”

In the early Church, Chrisans, parcularly those in the

East, celebrated the advent of Christ on Jan. 6 by commemo-

rang the Navity, Visitaon of the Magi, Bapsm of Christ

and the Wedding of Cana all in one feast of the Epiphany. By

the fourth century, both Christmas and Epiphany had been

set as separate feasts in some dioceses. At the Council of

Tours in 567, the Church set both Christmas day and Epipha-

ny as feast days on the Dec. 25 and Jan. 6, respecvely, and

named the twelve days between the feasts as the Christmas

season.

Over me, the Western Church separated the remaining

feasts into their own celebraons, leaving the celebraon of

the Epiphany to commemorate primarily the Visitaon of

the Magi to see the newborn Christ on Jan. 6. Meanwhile,

the Eastern Churches' celebraon of Theophany celebrates

Christ’s bapsm and is one of the holiest feast days of the

liturgical calendar.

The celebraon of the visitaon of the Magi – whom the

Bible describes as learned wise men from the East – has de-

veloped its own disnct tradions throughout the Roman

Church.

These celebraons point to the family-centered nature of

the feast day and of its original celebraon with the Holy

Family. The tradions also point to what is known – and

what is sll mysterious – about the Magi, who were the first

genles to encounter Christ. While the Bible remains silent

about the wise men’s actual names, as well as how many of

them there were, we do know that they were clever,

wealthy, and most importantly, brave.

“They were willing to take the risk in order to go search-

ing for the truth, in what they discerned was a monumental

event,” he said, adding that the Magi can sll be a powerful

example. Lastly, to the gi>s the wise men brought – frankin-

cense, myrrh and gold – are gi>s that point not only to

Christ’s divinity and his revelaon to the Magi as the King of

Kings, but also to his crucifixion. In giving herbs tradionally

used for burial, these gi>s, he said, bring a theological

“shadow, a sense of ancipaon of what is to come.”

Quote for the Week

“The more we are proud that the Bethlehem

story is plain enough to be understood by the

shepherds, and almost by the sheep, the more

do we let ourselves go, in dark and gorgeous

imaginave frescoes or pageants about the

mystery and majesty of the Three Magian

Kings.” - G.K. Chesterton

That’s all for now; see you in Church,

Did you receive your copy of The Biggest Lie this Christmas? We all want to be happy. And the reason we all want to be happy is because God created us for happiness. One of the lies of the world is that you’ll be happy when you get what you want. But getting what you want doesn’t make you happy. You know that. There have been times in your life when you got what you wanted, but it didn’t make you happy. God tells us that he created us for happiness. He wants us to become the-best-version-of-ourselves. But there’s suffering in that journey. There’s sacri-fice in that journey. There’s discipline in that journey. But the journey is worth it. And the reason the journey is worth it is because you’re worth it., The Biggest Lie in the History of Christianity is a book a book about God’s dream for you, God’s dream for me, God’s dream for humanity, and God’s dream for Christianity-and the role of Christianity in the world. If you didn’t get a copy at Christmas Mass, please stop by the Parish Office for your copy.

The Acts of the Apostles: The Acts of the Apostles: The Acts of the Apostles: The Acts of the Apostles:

The Spread of the KingdomThe Spread of the KingdomThe Spread of the KingdomThe Spread of the Kingdom

Tuesday, Jan. 8 and Feb. 12, March 12, April 2 and May 14

7 to 8:30 p.m. in Holy Family Hall

The Acts of the Apostles is a story of hope.

It’s a story of how a few Christians empowered by the Holy

Spirit

were chosen to bring Christ and the Good News

to the ends of the earth.

They taught as Christ did.

They performed miracles as he did. Some even gave their

lives for him.

They faced secular forces, internal strife, hostile crowds,

yet, despite all of this,

they brought the kingdom of God to a broken world

and the love of God to the hearts of men.

Join us to enrich your faith and rekindle your love for Christ

as you live the lives of the first disciples.
