of the Lordof the Lordof the Lordof the Lord

“The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few”

(Lk:10:2).

Throughout every generaon, from the me of Christ to

present day, this truth has sadly rung true. During my nine

years as the director of the Office of Priestly Vocaons, I

o en would reflect upon this passage from Scripture, as a

way to keep myself focused on how imperave it was for me

to both promote and nurture vocaonal discernment, with a

specific focus on the priesthood.

Within me, I also realized that another focus was need-

ed in my ministry: Affirming and accompanying those al-

ready living out their priestly vocaons. To that end, I have

been asked by the Archdiocese if one of our archdiocesan

priests, who has spent the past year in deep prayer and dis-

cernment regarding his priestly vocaon, could be given the

opportunity to live and minister here at Cabrini. In the spirit

of Chrisan charity on behalf of the people of this parish,

and in my own personal witness of priestly fraternity, I read-

ily accepted this invitaon.

I ask that you extend a warm welcome to Fr. Steve

Mateja, who was ordained for the Archdiocese of Detroit in

2012 and has served the people of God as both an associate

and pastor since his ordinaon. He is a graduate of Sacred

Heart Seminary, and a nave of Westland. I believe you will

find Fr. Steve to be a priest who desires nothing less than to

love and serve God.

While he, like so many of us in life, has experienced a few

‘unancipated bumps’ along the way, he is sll God’s be-

loved son. To hear from Fr. Steve about his journey to us,

please see his bullen arcle, which follows.

Please join me in prayerful support for Fr. Steve, as he

transions back into parish ministry, and for all those who

have faced life’s many struggles, yet strive to connue in

service to the Lord. Let us earnestly and fervently pray for a

renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit, so that all God’s peo-

ple will answer the call, no ma8er their state in life, to live as

laborers in the harvest and as joy-filled missionary disciples.

Through the intercession of St. Frances Cabrini, a woman of

true faith and missionary zeal, may God connue to bless Fr.

Steve, and those who have for a me been lost, but now,

through the grace of God, are found.

All God’s blessings, Fr. Tim Birney, pastor

From Fr. Steve Mateja Praise Jesus! I am very happy to offer myself in your ser-

vice as a priest at St. Frances Cabrini. This parish community

is one with a great history and one of great

witness and love. I have heard much about

the community and look forward to serving

you and your families. My hope is that to-

gether we will come to love Jesus more and

grow in our faith. I have known Fr. Tim for

some me and I am looking forward to work-

ing with him and learning from him; we will

make a great team, along with Fr. Dominic.

I wanted to take a short moment to share a li8le about

myself and where I am coming from in my life to serve you

here at Cabrini. I was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in

May, 2012. I served three years as associate pastor at Our

Lady of Good Counsel in Plymouth, then one year as associ-

ate pastor at St. Lawrence in Uca. A er that, I served for a

year and a half as pastor/administrator at Divine Grace in

Carleton. I then took a leave of absence from acve ministry

in the Archdiocese for 2018, and for nearly the enre year I

lived in a monastery in Lafaye8e, Louisiana. The leave was

my iniave and one I decided to take in order to take care

of myself and my priesthood. I love Jesus Christ; my only

desire is to love Him and make Him loved.

I took the leave of absence due to the fact that I allowed

my heart to become divided, and not focused fully on my

love for Jesus. I had entered into a consensual relaonship

with a single, adult female who had become my best friend.

This was inappropriate and contradicted the vows I took at

my ordinaon. During the relaonship, I struggled with

whether or not I would remain a priest or if I would leave

and marry her. I am a man and a priest of Jesus Christ – a

sinner, chosen among sinners, to lead sinners. Despite my

confusion, I could sll hear God’s call for me to remain in the

priesthood. Responding to this call, I said goodbye to my

friend, assured her of my prayers, and chose to live and

work with a community in Lafaye8e that is radically living

the consecrated life. Here, I was able to drown out the exte-

rior noise and just listen to the voice of God and understand

what He wanted for me and what was best for me, His be-

loved son. I have fully recommi8ed myself to my priestly life,

my vow and promise of celibacy, and ulmately a life of full

service to the Heart of Jesus.

I love the Lord and His Church so deeply. I want

nothing more than to save souls and to shine His light in this

Join us Jan. 22 for a discussion on the book

“The Biggest Lie in Christianity”

7 to 8:30 p.m., Holy Family Hall

One of the great themes of human history is God’s collaboration with humanity.

God is calling on the members of our parish community to help transform the

world! Every day, the seven billion people on this planet are sending prayers up to

God. Very often, God wants us to collaborate with Him to answer these prayers

because a lot of those prayers don’t require some incredible miracle to be an-

swered. Many of them just require a little bit of kindness, a little bit of courage, a

little bit of generosity. We are capable of that. We are capable of collaborating

with God to answer people’s prayers every day.

In order to do that, we have to get beyond the biggest lie in the history of Christi-

anity. We’ve got to get beyond a lot of lies we’re constantly being taught about

Christianity so we can begin to collaborate with God in a powerful way; so that

with God we can answer prayers with our kindness, courage and generosity.

If you didn’t get a copy of the book at Christmas,

there are a few left in the Parish Office - stop in for yours!

dark world. I share all of this with you

because in this year away, I have under-

stood more fully what it means to be a

beloved child of God. I know we cannot

run from our faults, failings, sin or falls

from grace. At the same time, God does

not know us by our sins. We are His sons

and daughters. When we come to the

Father on our knees, He rebuilds us into

something greater than before. We have

a Good Father who loves to forgive, and

I stand in testimony of that.

I am so eager to get back into parish

ministry here in Allen Park. Please know

of my prayers for you.

Please pray for me as well, and espe-

cially for those affected by my weak-

nesses and sins.

I look forward to getting to know you

and to hearing your stories and what

God has done in your own life.

In the Heart of Jesus and Mary,

Fr. Steve Mateja

Please pray for the family and friends

Consider joining us today as we

strive to make a difference in our

parish and community. The Knights

of Columbus is a growing organiza-

on of more than 1.8 million mem-

bers, who over 130 years has com-

mi8ed to overcome the challenges

faced by fellow parishioners and community members.

Church: As Knights, our faith is our foundaon. We

promote voca0ons and provide financial support for

seminarians and postulants through our Refund Sup-

port Voca0ons Program (RSVP). Each council is com-

mi8ed to supporng our Church and strengthening

each member’s faith through our faith-based pro-

grams.

Community: Councils are equally commi8ed to im-

proving their local communies through a variety of

iniaves. Among these are councils supporng Habi-

tat for Humanity and Global Wheelchair Mission, en-

suring that families are provided the basic human

need of shelter and are restored the gi of mobility.

Council: The fraternity among Knights is evident when

we come together for acvies, including our support

of Special Olympics. Through iniaves such as this,

members emphasize the importance and dignity of

every person.

Culture of Life: As Catholics, we know that all human

life is precious and deserves to be protected, from

concepon to natural death. Through the Ultra-Sound

Ini0a0ve, councils have saved countless lives, while

taking a public stand against aboron through parci-

paon in the March for Life and similar events.

Family: Through family-focused programs, members

are able to strengthen their family and marital bonds.

Most of these acvies also provide the opportunity -

through iniaves like the Food for Families Program

– to assist other families.

Youth: Through numerous youth acvies, councils

help young people to build a strong sense of civic and

religious responsibility. Also, the Coats for Kids Pro-

gram provides the gi of warmth to needy children.

If this appeals to you, consider joining the Fr. Saylor

Healthcare Ministry Corner Programs offered as a free service to community

Saturday, Jan. 19 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Holy Family Hall

Our parish Healthcare Ministry team will be offering a presentation on end-of-life

care options, including Palliative Care (comfort-focused care WHILE receiving cura-

tive treatments) and Hospice Care (comfort focused care WITHOUT curative treat-

ments). Healthcare options will be presented by Nurse Practitioner and Cabrini

parishioner, Jeanne Aichele, who will be joined by representatives from several

companies that provide these services.

My best gift? Your selfless giving of time, talents and treasures to help our parish serve others

As we begin a new year, I’d like to take a few minutes to thank all of you for a very blessed 2018! There is so very much

to be thankful for this past year, but most of all, I am thankful for the gifts of faith, love, care and compassion that you, the

parishioners of St. Frances Cabrini, have shared with our community and extended to the least of our brothers and sis-

ters, both locally and globally, through the generosity of your time, talents and treasures - it truly is a gift and has especial-

ly come to light during this Advent and Christmas Season.

Throughout the year I have had the pleasure of working with so many of you serving organizations that directly service

the needs of the poor: All Saints, St. Leo, St. Christine, ChristNet, Gleaners, Manna Meals, Sr. Judie Lunch Ministry, the Sani

-Pad Project, plastic mats for the homeless, PBJ Ministry, Focus:HOPE, and our very own St. Vincent DePaul council that

works tirelessly to meet the most basic needs of those who knock at our door daily - each of these ministries is a gift.

Those who serve or donate food for our funeral luncheons, put food in our food bin on your way into church, crochet

plastic mats for the homeless, bring Communion to the homebound, provide educational and training sessions for our

good health and well being, who provide hospitality through our Sunday morning coffee and donuts, Sunday evening pizza

socials, and greeters before mass, our young people who take a week in the summer to serve the poor in another

city, and all those who serve within our parish ministries in any capacity - you are a gift!

My heart was especially warmed by the total selfless giving through our annual Giving Trees and Adopt-A-Family pro-

grams: Thousands of dollars in monetary donations from several local businesses and individuals; individuals who dropped

off endless amounts of gift cards, which we used for our adopted families and to help those who reached out for assis-

tance; everyone who put gifts under our seven Giving Trees. People who stepped forward and contributed endless hours

and loving care shopping for and sorting gifts; those in our parish and schools who donated food items so that each adopt-

ed family received a bag of groceries with their gifts; local businesses and organizations that donated the hams and tur-

keys for the holiday meals we provided.

These are just a few examples of how you, our parish family, stepped in throughout the year and provided for people in

both small and large ways - your generosity and trust in God, giving lovingly and unconditionally, was a true example of

how we live out the Gospel message.

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful servants of God's grace in its various

forms." (1 Peter 4:10)

Summer trip filled with faith, fellowship, fun!

Parents-For eight years, we have taken a group of middle

schoolers from our parish to St. Joseph MI to participate in

Just5Days, a Catholic service learning program created just

for youth going into grades 7, 8 and 9. It is similar to the

Young Neighbors in Action program that our high schoolers

attend. There are a few spots left for the trip we have

planned for July 8-12, 2019, and we encourage you to

prayerfully consider sending your child with us. The program

offers age-appropriate service, hands-on learning about

Catholic Social Teaching, dynamic prayer and liturgy, and a

meaningful experience of Christian community. The cost is

$335, and we offer fundraising opportunities to help offset

the price.

HOPE Dementia Ministry

The Brain Benefits of Sleep and Exercise

Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019

Atria Kinghaven, 14800 King Road, Riverview

Continental breakfast at 9:45 a.m. ; Dementia Session 10 a.m.

Even though there has been only minimal success with drug

therapy for demena, there has been much success with other forms of treat-

ment when an early diagnosis of symptoms occurs. Sciensts are looking at the

brain in a different way and finding that lifestyle may have much more of an

effect than ever thought before. High stress, low acvity and poor diet may be

some of the main reasons that so many people are developing unhealthy

brains. This session will explain how quality sleep and increased exercise can

help improve and protect your brain
