Dear Parents, It was wonderful to walk around the school last Friday and see so many dad’s having breakfast with their children and participating in the students learning. Thank you to all of the mums who made the breakfast session so special for our dads and children. Miss McCurdy’s classroom in particular was a hive of activity with dads and children engaged in construction work. These experiences for our children are priceless; having parents involved in learning activities at school is a powerful example to the children about the value we place on their education. My sincere thanks also to all of the parents who ran the father’s day stall on Friday, it is greatly appreciated. I am sure there were many excited children and dads as presents were received and opened! This week and next all classes are presenting projects and activities from this term. Please keep an eye out for invitations from teachers as to when these sessions will happen. All parents are most welcome to attend. Next week is our last for this term and will have a focus of book week. Book week was officially in the week of our school concert so we have moved it to the last week of term so all students can enjoy the activities. There is a schedule of activities later in this newsletter edition from Mrs. Molino our Literacy Leader. Some special highlights are the lunch on Thursday and the Mass and book week parade on Friday (All parents are welcome to attend). The library will be open all week for book fair. Special thanks to Mrs. Drinan for coordinating this activity for our children. The State Department of Education and Training have recently extended the 2015 Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund application deadline to 18th September, 2015. If you have in previous years received EMA funding you may be eligible to receive CSEF funding. Please see Yvette in the office if you think you may be eligible and would like to apply. Well done to Miss Johnston and Year 1J for an excellent assembly item on Monday. It was very exciting to see the children present their learning from this term. At the end of next week Mrs. Peggy McDonald’s will be going on maternity leave. I would like to wish her and her husband Kevin all the best as they embark on the special vocation of parenthood. Miss Muireann McGowan who is replacing her next term until the end of the year will be at school for some time on the Friday 18 th September to meet the children and staff. Planning for 2016 is already underway with many new initiatives, structures and personnel being considered. The first of these being the appointment of a new Deputy Principal hopefully early in Term 4. Other initiatives and programs I will be looking at in consultation with the staff, parents and students will be: camp structures for Year 3 - 6, classroom locations around the school due to the increase in class (Year 5 & 6 area) and senior student leadership opportunities to name a few. Summer uniform can be worn from the start of Term 4 but can be optional with winter uniform for the first two weeks. Full summer uniform is expected of all students from the 18 th of October (Week 3 Term 4). School hats are compulsory for all students from this week due to the warmer weather starting. Mark’s Gospel this weekend, gives us an insight into his purpose for writing and his message. For Mark, the supreme moment of triumph for Jesus, rather than the resurrection, is when Christ suffers and dies on the cross. The cross represents Christ’s unconditional response to God and therefore is his triumph. Peter is the first of the disciples to recognise Jesus as the ‘messiah’, the ‘saviour’ of the Jews; but he is not aware yet how Jesus will be a saviour. Peter’s idea, like so many of his time, was expecting the messiah to be some sort of hero … who would save the Jews, save them from the Romans. However, instead of their expectations, Jesus reveals HIS mission is to suffer and die, to which Peter tries hard to dissuade Jesus from this path … and is branded as ‘Satan’….

I feel for Peter in this scene – confused, not liking Jesus’ words, and having his own idea of Jesus’ future. … Sometimes I try to tell God what I want done, and how it would be best for God to act. Then, like Peter, I have to learn that my role is disciple, not leader. Peter has to learn, as I have to learn, that the disciple needs to listen attentively and remain always as follower – even when the path is difficult and seems crazy by our standards. I pray that I can continue to listen, be open and learn to be a follower of Christ, even in those times when the way is confusing.

This weekend, all across Australia, we highlight in a special way one of the most vulnerable groups within society – our children! We pray for all who are victims and ask the good and gentle Lord to give us the strength and courage to speak out for those children affected by abuse in anyway; the humility to understand the wrongs of the past; the patience to stop and listen to children and the vulnerable. We ask that we, as members of the body of Christ are able to protect the dignity of all human life. Amen.

STOP KILLING RHINOCEROSES

Luca, Mia and Lily Sophia are in a jungle looking at rhinos in a perfectly harmless place. But

then they come across five hunters, the hunters were going to set forth to find the rhinos and were trying to kill them with a sniper rifle. We told them that there was no reason to kill the

rhinos because they are a harmless animals and we shouted at them and said ‘STOP NOW! THEY ARE HARMLESS TO YOU!’

People are killing rhinos for their tusks to make a medicine that scientists haven’t proven the

health benefits about yet. When their tusks have been taken, the rhinoceros dies within a couple of minutes. Rhinos shouldn't be killed just for their tusks because it is putting them at risk of

becoming extinct.

People are building properties on Rhinos homes. They are killing the rhinos because there is a

risk that the rhinos will kill them. Rhinos usually live in Africa and Asia and their habitats are rapidly being destroyed. We need to protect the environment they live in.

Some people are killing these animals with their guns just for fun. They go laughing about it and

don’t even care that one day the rhino may become extinct. People are killing rhinos for a sport and have fun with their friends, this is not a very strong reason to kill innocent animals.

People should stop poaching rhinos because just taking their tusks, destroying their homes and

doing it for fun is not a good enough reason to to kill any living thing. If you think it's cool well, it’s not. It's just cruel and what we need to do is stand up against these people and stop them

today. Otherwise we may be living in a world without these beautiful creatures before we know it.

LITERACY NEWS ~ Mrs Danni Molino

What a wonderful term we have had preparing for our whole school concert and finally putting on a fabulous production! With so much excitement and practise going into such a large performance, staff decided we would celebrate Book Week in the last week of term. Here is a list of some special Book Week activities that will be held right across the school in our final week...

*Students will create a poster design of the BOOK WEEK 2015 theme “Books Light Up Our World"

*Classes will host a Literary Luncheon with Buddy Groups whereby students share a favourite picture story book with buddy class.

*Some fantastic Art ideas have begun and will continue to be explored as a response to the nominated books teachers have read to the students.

*Staff will enjoy a Book Club Social.

*Students will have opportunities to preview and purchase books from the Lamont Book Fair during the week.

*There will also be a Healthy Hut special lunch order day on Thursday.

*Students are invited to come to school on Friday 18th September for a Book Week “dress up as your favourite book character” parade which will be held straight after Mass.

*For any parents who would like to stay on after the parade on Friday the students and staff will participate in a DEAR Session - Drop Everything and Read.

Hope books are lighting up your world! Happy reading! Danni

Holiday Program-Planned experiences Holiday program ACTIVITIES whilst planned are flexible with consideration for active and passive time and seasonal changes. We aim to provide opportunities for children to relax as well as continue their learning journey through varied and interesting interactions with each other and community partners.

SEPT/OCT HOLIDAY PROGRAM LINK: http://www.sfbrightoneast.catholic.edu.au/_uploads/_ckpg/files/p%26f/StFinbar'sVacSEPT2015.pdf Please note; We are closed Friday 2/10/2015

Sunsmart Guidelines: NO HAT NO PLAY. We insist children on wearing a hat @ all times during outside play. We recommend broad rimmed or legionnaire hats. SPF 30+ sunscreen must be applied prior to the arrival of the program. Staff will record and assist with application at intervals throughout the day.

Hats and sunscreen during Holiday Program Strategies for teaching sun protection in the service will be based on children actively practicing and monitoring their own implementation of sun protection strategies as active learners (My Time Our Place Outcome 4). This will include children having opportunities to access UV alerts and monitoring exposure to the sun of both themselves and their peers (MTOP Outcome 5). These opportunities for learning empowers children to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing (MTOP Outcome 3) Children will determine UV level prior to going outside. Should they find that UV is above 3 then they must Slip on sun protective clothing Slop on SPF 30+ sunscreen Slap on a hat Seek shade and Slide on sunglasses (if practical)

Parents, please provide a broad rimmed or legionnaire sun hat and sunscreen for the upcoming holiday program.

Excursions Educators will talk with children about why applying sunscreen and wearing appropriate clothing and a hat is important. Programming During the last week of term the OSHC will focus on the topic of "Sunsmart" and children will proceed to create their own "Sunsmart Poster". They will include UV levels, a selected scene, and a selected message. The children will also construct shelter from the elements such as "shady cubbies". Educators will help children search for the shady places and discuss how shady places feel and why they are

13 September 2015 St Mark’s Gospel

Chapter 8 is pivotal in Mark’s Gospel. These first 8 chapters help reveal who Jesus Christ is and the following 8 call us to follow Jesus both in good times and in difficult ones. The question “Who do you say I am?” is directed straight at the disciples, and their leader Simon Peters gives an inspired answer “You are the Christ!” The second question (what is required of a follower of Christ) is much harder to answer – they continue to grapple with it in a clumsy, fearful way, until they are strengthened by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
