Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our respon‐sibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so...please re‐member in your prayers:

A Prayer for the Armed Forces Almighty God, stretch forth Your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces. As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each
day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Daniel Guziec; SPC Jeffrey Foerster S/SGT David A. Domel Jr.; Capt. Scott Helminski
Thank you!

“Beloved, see what love the Father has bestowed on us that we
may be called the children of God.” (1 JOHN 3:1) During this season of giving, let’s also remember the gifts that
God has given to us, including the gift of making us His children. Are we as grateful for that wonderful
gift as we are for all the material gifts we have received? How do we show our gratitude to God for the
gifts He gives to us all year?

HOLY FAMILY SUNDAY REFLECTION
L osing a child in a crowd is a parental nightmare! A combination of panic, guilt and desperation makes it a horrifying experience. Mary and Joseph, like all
parents, would have struggled hard to keep their imagination and anxiety in check throughout their frantic and fretful search for Jesus. Mary expresses relief, frustration and love when she finds him in the temple after a three‐day search: 'Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously' (Luke 2:48). This incident allows us to glean that the Holy Family had to face the same kind of pressures that every family faces. The environment in which we have been raised and in which we raise our children is essential in our formation and development. A family is a very human environment — the joy, the pain, the drama and the ordinary nature of our lives are lived within its confines. God chose to mould and form his Son within the environment and culture of a family: this reveals show highly God considers the family as a place of holiness, love and formation. Today, the hope and fervent desire of the Church is that every human family may be permeated by the mystery of the Holy Family, in which God became man. This mystery offers many points for reflection: Christ spent his childhood and youth with his family, thus showing us that God's greatest work is carried out within the family; he wrought our redemption and salvation in the context of his family life; and it is thanks to it that all of us are saved. This is why today's feast is of such universal significance. The light of the Holy Family shines out to anywhere where there is a human family — which is in fact everywhere. Lord God, you chose to form and mould your beloved Son
within a human family. Grant me the insight and understanding to grasp that each human family is a domestic church. Teach me to
nurture and cultivate within my own family an obedience to your commandments, a love for your
Church and a devotion to your beloved Son.

Dear Fr. Jason and Parishioners of St. Ferdinand: As you know, we collected food for the poor and hungry in Kenya during the first weekend in Advent. From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank every one of you for your overwhelming generosity. You gave so much hope to the hopeless. Please know that all of the items donated have a huge impact on the poorest of the poor in Kenya. The Missionary of the Poor Brothers are very thankful for each and every act of kindness and generosity that you continue to share with them and those they help. They wish you many blessings in the coming year. Please know that your intentions and those of the parish are kept in their daily prayers. Again thank you for all the food, items or donations made on their behalf. Many thanks and may God's blessings and peace be with you all always! 2013 ARCHDIOCESAN ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL BEGINS “Love Never Fails!” 1 Cor 13:8
The 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway. Many of our parishioners either have or soon will receive a mailing from Cardinal George. He will ask that you make a pledge to the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. The Appeal supports both parish and Archdiocesan ministries. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. This year, the theme of the Appeal is: “Love Never Fails!” It is God’s love for us that is responsible for all that we are and all that we have. We are the beneficiaries of God’s love throughout our lives. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work our parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please consider the materials that you will receive. Review the ministries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously.

DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed in
English everyday from Monday to Friday fol‐lowing 8:00 a.m. Mass. Please take a short break from your busy life and join the ladies in prayers. On every Saturday right after 8:00 a.m. Mass prayer to St. Anne is being said. Please stop by the Church and offer to God at least a few moments of your time.
If you or a loved one are in the hospital and would like a visit from our ministers, deacons or priests, you must
call the rectory and request a visit. The privacy law states that the hospital cannot provide a list when we come o visit our parishioners. And even if they do, patients that come to the hospital through the Emergency Room never get their “parish” listed — it’s not one of the emergency questions. Even though hospital personnel can call the parish at the patient’s request, it is best for the patient or a family member to call the rec‐tory.

glad you are here and hope you will join us.
THE DIFFERENCE YOU CAN MAKE What can you do now that won’t cost you anything but still help the parish? One way is through your estate planning. Most people have families they need to provide for and that is extremely important. Perhaps some portion of your estate
could be given to St. Ferdinand. Here’s how you can do it:
Name St. Ferdinand to receive part of your IRA. Just ask the custodian or trustee for a new beneficiary form.
Make a life insurance gift. Your insurance agent can sup‐ply a beneficiary form that names St. Ferdinand as a beneficiary for all or part of the policy.
Investigate P.O.D. accounts. In most areas, you can name St. Ferdinand to receive CD’s or savings accounts at death, often called P.O.D. (pay on death) accounts.
Leave part of your stock portfolio. Brokerage accounts generally will permit investors to name beneficiaries for securities held at the firm.
Add St. Ferdinand when you make or amend your will. It’s another wonderful way you can leave a legacy for St Ferdinand!
If you have a revocable living trust, include St. Ferdinand as a beneficiary. Any immediate gifts made through your living trust are tax deductible.
Finally, when naming St. Ferdinand as your beneficiary, the correct language is: “I give (a percentage or dollar amount) to the Catholic Bishop of Chicago – A Corporation Sole, for the sole benefit of Saint Ferdinand Parish, Chicago.” When named in this way, the money will be used exclusively to benefit our parish.

I TY MOŻESZ ZOSTAĆ KAPŁANEM Jako rodzice, Maryja z Józefem musieli zawierzyć Bogu do końca, podczas gdy: „Jezus czynił postępy w mądrości, w latach i łasce u Boga i ludzi.”

RODZINY
W pierwszą niedzielę po Bożym Narodzeniu Kościół
katolicki obchodzi niedzielę Świętej Rodziny. Święto to
zaczęto obchodzić w różnych krajach począwszy od
XVIII wieku a zatwierdził je papież Leon XIII.
Natomiast decyzją papieża Benedykta XV zaczęto je
obchodzić w całym Kościele.
Święto św. Rodziny po raz pierwszy ustanowił 4
listopada 1684 r. w Kanadzie, za aprobatą papieża
Aleksandra VII, biskup Francois Montmorency‐Laval.
W Liście Episkopatu Polski do wiernych z dnia 23
października 1968 roku czytamy: "Dziś ma miejsce
święto przedziwne; nie święto Pańskie ani Matki
Najświętszej, ani jednego ze świętych, ale święto
Rodziny. O niej teraz usłyszymy w tekstach Mszy
świętej, o niej dziś mówi cała liturgia Kościoła. Jest to
święto Najświętszej Rodziny ‐ ale jednocześnie święto
każdej rodziny. Bo słowo
«rodzina» jest imieniem
wspólnym Najświętszej
Rodziny z Nazaretu i każdej

The American poet Ogden Nash had this to say about family in his short poem, Family Court: “One would be in less danger/ From the wiles of a stranger/ If one's own kin and kith/ Were more fun to be with.” The British poet Larkin had a darker notion. Typically, I don’t like fiddling with another writer’s work, but given this publication venue, I feel a need to change a few words in Larkin’s, This Be The Verse: “They mess your up you mum and dad/ They may not mean to but they do/ They fill you with the faults they had/ and add some extra just for you/ But they were messed up in their turn/ By fools in old style hats and coats/ Who half the time were soppy‐stern/ and half at one another’s throats/ Man hands on misery to man/ It deepens like a coastal shelf/ Get out as early as you can/ And don’t have any kids yourself.” As a friend put it when she heard this for the first time, “Well, doesn’t he sound dreamy…” Nash’s poetic family‐lashing was tongue‐in‐cheek. Larkin’s, in contrast, not so much. Nonetheless, I needn’t look far to find other great writers and poets who put a more kindly spin on the familial unit. Per the eighteenth century English poet William Cowper, “Domestic happiness, thou only bliss of Paradise that has surviv’d the fall!” Per Thomas Jefferson, “The happiest moments of my life have been the few which I have passed at home in the bosom of my family.” Millenniums earlier, Euripides observed, “ Blood’s thicker than water, and when one’s in trouble, best to seek out a relative’s open arms.” A Burmese saying puts it differently, but the same: “In time of test, family is best,” which, paraphrased in a
different direction, embraces Robert Frost’s notion that “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” And I bring all of this up, of course, in conjunction with today’s Feast of the Holy Family. As a parent, I can relate to the conversation that must have occurred between Mary and Joseph when they realized that Jesus was not in their company. “I thought you knew where he was,” perhaps Mary said. “I thought you knew where he was,” perhaps Joseph answered before they both returned to Jerusalem. And locating their child in the temple there with the teachers after three more days of searching, Mary was beside herself: “Son, why have you done this to us?” When my children were small and my father was living with us after Mom died, I came to understand more fully that a holy family is not necessarily a family in which everything runs smoothly. Anger. Frustration. Disappointment. Remorse. These are all part of the routine for most families I know, but they do not negate holiness. At least I pray they don’t. Per today’s Gospel, “Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man,” and this is my prayer for each of us as we turn another page in the book of our lives. Because Larkin’s point of view not withstanding, we are family. And as brothers and sisters in Christ, a holy one at that. Happy New Year.
