From the Pastor’s Desk…

The major seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Triduum, and Easter are now past, but about half the year remains for us to celebrate our redemp on in Christ in a more general way. Before we resume the counted Sundays of Ordinary Time, however, we devote this Sunday and next to celebra ng two profound mysteries of our faith: The Most Holy Trinity and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. A special feast in honor of the Most Holy Trinity began in monas c communi es as early as the ninth century. By the fourteenth century, the whole Western church was observing it as it does today, on the Sunday a er Pentecost.

*************** This past week with all the loo ng and violence that had taken place our city, along with many others

throughout our country, we experienced the dark side of misplaced anger and frustra on. With the tragic

death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer who was supposed to be upholding the law, things

went beyond what would be considered fair and just. The need for people to speak out and give a voice

against prejudice and injus ce is indeed jus fied. Our country has for years, going back perhaps even further

than the injus ce of slavery, been lax in its fairness and jus ce towards individuals of a color other than

white. When this goes on as long as it has, tensions build and need to find a release. Sadly, when this process

cannot be resolved in fair, peaceful and equitable ways, we see what it can poten ally manifest itself as –

violence and destruc on, as was witnessed this past week. Does this kind of response deserve acceptance?

Absolutely not! However; it is a reminder to us all of what yet needs to be done in the area of social jus ce

for all and in the treatment of human beings as equals – no ma er what their color may be. Mar n Luther

King showed us the way to peaceful protest and jus ce. Will we ever learn that we are all brothers and

sisters and equals in the eyes of God?

*************** Many of you may be wondering when we will be opening our church doors. We have been working diligently

trying to get everything and everyone that we need to open our doors in a safe and organized way. I, too,

have reached a level of frustra on with all the reports, updates, rules, regula ons and requirements that we

have been inundated with over the past few months. However, before we can open our doors, your safety

as well as our staff and volunteers must be a priority. Our church doors have been closed for too long now.

For this reason, we are looking at the weekend of June 13/14 as the weekend we will be returning to Sunday

Mass with, of course, limited sea ng and with the following of the safety protocols that will be necessary for

you to be comfortable with this return to church services. For this reason, we will begin our return to church

with only two weekend Masses – Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. There will

definitely be many changes as compared to what you may have been used to when coming to Mass before

the COVID-19 reality. There will be a registra on system put in place through the parish office and/or on-line

Page 3: St. Eugene Parish THE VOICE · 2020-06-07 · Courtney Frederick Dylan Golden Teagan Karnick ... Before we resume the counted Sundays of Ordinary Time, however, we devote this ...

June 7, 2020 St. Eugene Parish Page Three

to reserve a seat for these newly scheduled weekend Masses, you will be asked to wear a mask and sani ze

your hands upon entering, there will be only one entrance to come into church, you will be seated in a

loca on that may not be where you have sat in the past (this is to accommodate our church cleaners in the

sani zing of our church a er each service), you will need to receive Holy Communion in your hand rather

than on your tongue, there will be no Missale es or Music Hymnals in the pews, the Communion lines will

be different and walking up to receive Communion will be at six foot intervals, there will be no physical sign

of peace and no holding hands during the praying of the “Our Father”. Finally, since there will be no passing

of collec on baskets for your offering, you will be asked to leave your offering in the basket as you enter the

doors of church.

In me we will hopefully be able to work out any kinks along the way. Beginning, on Monday, June 8th you

can call the parish office at 773-775-6659 between 9:00 a.m. un l 4:00 p.m. or by going to the parish

website at www.st-eugene.org to access on-line sign-up to reserve your place in church. This sign-up will be

necessary un l we can figure a way to adequately provide the right number of Masses to accommodate

those returning to church. Please remember, we are all going through this and learning together. Please be

pa ent and understanding throughout this reopening process as I am sure we are all going to be challenged

in one way or another.

***************

Father’s Day is only two weeks away. Here in our country we set aside this special day to

remember and celebrate these special men in each of our lives who, with our mothers, have been

instrumental in not only bringing each of us into this world, but have also helped to provide a

loving home and a strong male role model that is much needed in today’s society. We honor these

men who have cared, nurtured, fed, and even sacrificed for us because of their deep paternal love for us.

Whether living or deceased, hopefully a prayer of thanksgiving will be said for your dad. If you might wish to

have your father remembered in a special way at our Father’s Day Mass, as well as having his name on our

altar throughout the year, you can do so by wri ng in your father’s names on the special Father’s Day

envelope provided in your packet this month. They can be dropped off in the mail slot at the rectory or

mailed in as well with your contribu on in the next few weeks and their names will be added to the

memorial page(s) that will be included in our parish bulle n as well as placed on our altar for an en re year.

Have a great week ahead everyone! And congratula ons to all our St. Eugene graduates who this

weekend celebrated their unique “parking lot” gradua on ceremony. Though, this was not our

usual way of celebra ng gradua on, it will be one that will be forever remembered. All the best to

you and to each of our parish’s 8th grade, high school, college graduates!

GRACE AND ETERNAL LIFE Moses is a man after our own hearts, for haven’t we all dealt with more than our share of stiff-necked people? Indeed, haven’t we all gotten a little stiff-necked ourselves at times? Complaining . . . impatient . . . quick to anger. How lucky for Moses—how lucky for all of us—that God is exactly the opposite! And we don’t even have to guess about it. The Lord tells us so directly. Accordingly, Moses does what we all need to do. Even with the tablets in hand, he bows down and asks for God’s forgiveness and grace. Encouraging us to live together in peace—and in God’s favor—the Apostle Paul knows all about this grace, joyfully invoking Christ’s grace on us along with God’s love and the Holy Spirit’s. “Rejoice,” he says. And when it comes to rejoicing, John offers us the gladdest words of all: the assurance of eternal life through Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2020 THRU JUNE 30, 2021 The calendar year for the use of parish facil-ities by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive sum-mer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require August scheduling, part or all of August may also be una-vailable for use by parish and other organizations. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2020 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2021. All organizations re-questing space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory or on our website). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2020 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2020-21 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before final-izing plans for events.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
