Message from Ms Ash Dear Parents, Guardian, Students and Other Parishioners, As you would be aware, we are delighted to put a name to our new Principal, Ms Christina Ferguson. Christina will take over from me at the start of the 2019 school year. I know that you will join with me in welcoming her and I have no doubt that she will lead the students to great learning over the next eight years. Father Tad has written to you to inform you of this appointment in the letter on the front page. Advent

The seasons change and now we are in Advent. I love Advent because it is filled with great hope and it matches the anticipation that surrounds us in our day to day world. The real world doesn’t put much emphasis on preparing your heart for Christmas but it does make a big fuss about preparing your home and family for Christmas. It is sad that we are often tempted to focus on just the commercial side of Christmas. In a balanced approach to anything major we should prepare ourselves mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Yes, we should be buying gifts and hiding them, we should be thinking of how we can share our Christmas with family and friends, we should be ordering food and drinks and sending invitations but if we do that without preparing our hearts and minds as well, we may end up with the kind of Christmas that we hear about after Christmas is over. You know the stories, domestic violence, often fuelled by too much of a good thing, people feeling lonely on what should be a day of fun and laughter, people who hurt friend or family members with cruel words or thoughtless actions. So often people come through Christmas with more pain than joy. Advent is a time for preparing our heart and minds so that we travel to Christmas thinking about what really happens at Christmas. Jesus comes into the world, our creator comes as a child born into a working class family, a family who will become refugees, a family that is already being persecuted by a foreign power. Why does this happen. What is the real message of Christmas?

Start asking your family to answer the question. What do we really remember at Christmas? Why are we rejoicing? What are we going to do to share our joy that Jesus came to teach us how to live a life of love, a life of doing everything we can to make this a better world? Start family meals by lighting a candle on an advent wreath or use an Advent calendar and then ask each member of the family if they tried to do something good that day on the way to Christmas. You make Advent a real opportunity to make Christmas holy, when you focus on the spiritual question, what do we remember and celebrate at Christmas? Christmas approached with sensitivity and grace and becomes a time of joy and not just a crazy party time. Life and Work Balance This year, we had a curfew on work emails in order to help staff stay sane and well. The possibility of working 24/7 has become dangerous to many people’s health and impacting on family and friendships. Staff were asked not to send emails about work to anyone after 7pm at night and before 7am in the morning. Staff were able to write them if they wanted to but we asked that they stayed in draft until a reasonable time was reached, 7am to 7pm is manageable. We have found this very successful and it helps us to appreciate that work has to be managed in such a way that our health and wellbeing is respected. We occasionally get parent emails after 7pm and before 7am. Can we ask the community to respect that we will not respond to them if they are sent after 7pm but we will respond to them the next day after 7am? If you can store them as draft until 7am, that would be great but we will not be reading or responding to emails between 7pm and 7am unless there is a real emergency! Thank you!

Message from Ms Perazzo Personal Message

At the end of this week I will be taking an

extended period of long service leave leading up

to my retirement from teaching in the latter part

of next year.

I prepare to leave Catholic Education with a

sense of sadness, but also an amazing sense of

gratitude for all that I have been given both

personally and professionally in my time in

Catholic Education.

My time at St Elizabeth’s has been very

rewarding and enriching and I have been

privileged to walk in the lives of so many

wonderful students and each one has left

footprints in my heart.

I have worked alongside an amazing group of

teachers during my time here who under the

insightful, contemporary and shared leadership

of Christine Ash have been committed to making

a difference and striving to make this school a

truly great school.

I want to thank the parents both present and

past for your willingness to work alongside

myself and all staff to ensure that every child

has been nurtured and supported to become the

best person they could be and to achieve their

true potential.

I want to express my deep gratitude to Father

Tad for his spiritual guidance, his friendship,

support and encouragement during my time at

St Elizabeth’s.

Finally, I want to thank my late husband Peter

and our children Elizabeth and Stephen for all

the support, encouragement and unconditional

acceptance they have always given to me as I

have pursued my long and very happy and

rewarding passion to be the best teacher I could

be.

I wish you all every blessing for the future and I

look forward to seeing many of you when I

return for special occasions.

In deepest gratitude

Nan Perazzo

Message from Ms Walker Confirmation Congratulations to all our children who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday 18th November. Our Mass, which was celebrated by Bishop Elliott and Father Tad was a beautiful

celebration of our young people’s ongoing faith journey. Thank you to all our staff and families for their preparation of our candidates and to the Excelsis choir for providing us with such beautiful music. I am sure that all of our families are as proud of our young adults as we are. Gift giving Mass Tomorrow the whole school will celebrate Mass at 9:15am where the children are invited to l donate gifts to the less fortunate. This is called the ‘Gift giving Mass.’ All donations are most appreciated and will be forwarded to St. Vincent de Paul. We do not have a St Vincent de Paul Chapter in our Parish so St Gerard’s SVP give out the gifts for us. Thank you, St Gerard’s SVP!

Foundation/1/2 students- donations of

unwrapped Christmas gifts for children such as toys, drawing tools like textas, board games.

Years 3 and 4 students- food donations in bottles, boxes or cans such as fruits, soups, chocolates.

Years 5 and 6 students- money donations.

Thank you to the choir who will sing for us at the Mass. Please join us if you can, we would love to see you there.

Swimming Well done to our senior children and our junior children for their eager participation in the Swimming program. It was the first time for Years 5 and 6 and despite

some nerves experienced by some students, was a rewarding experience.

Carols night 11th December

Please keep this date in your diary as it a highlight for our community. The evening begins at 7pm and you will enjoy listening to the Christmas story and to the voices of our wonderful children.

Farewell concert for Mrs. Ash The school would like to bid farewell and wish Mrs. Ash a happy retirement by presenting a whole school concert on Thursday 13th December. Every child will be on stage and are expected to perform with their class. Rehearsals are well on the way.

Parents/friends can enjoy a cup of tea and biscuits and a chat with Chris from 2pm till 2:30pm in the Nook.

The concert begins at 2:30pm sharp and will finish by 3:30pm which affects home time.

Could you please make arrangements on that day to pick up your child/ children from the PAC where they will be dismissed by their classroom teacher?

Just to help with seating, could you please complete the permission request on your CareMonkey advising us of the number of family members who will be attending the Farewell Concert. The closing date for this is Monday, 10th December. Thank you so much to those families who have already completed the request.

We do understand if you cannot attend, so a DVD will be available for purchase.

Message from Mr Andrew

The year is nearing the end and I would like to wish the best to our departing Year 6 students. This year they have been a dream to teach in our P.E. lessons. There are many very lucky, local secondary schools who will be receiving this cohort and their P.E. programs will be much better for it. As far as our inter-school sports competitions go, they have been wonderful role models in the way they play their sports. Our motto is to play to our best and to play fair. The legacy they will leave St. E's with is often hard to measure and hard to see, but the Year 5's will carry the torch of striving and valuing integrity. They have learned from observing and being involved with the actions of their elder classmates. I would like to thank the wonderful parents who have supported our sporting teams this year. From standing on the sidelines, ensuring their kids are organised for the day, to helping set up and pack up our sports events - we thank you all. Your efforts have value added to our sports days and our school is much richer for it.
