President’s Report-
Antoinette started the meeting by thanking everyone for coming to the last HSA meeting of the year. She
also thanked those on the phone for dialing in. She then led us in prayer and mentioned that we are
aware there was a mass being said for Tommy so she understood if anyone needed to leave a little early
to go to the mass.
Antoinette referenced the May meeting minutes on the tables to have them reviewed and asked for a
motion for approval. There was a motion and then a second and the minutes were approved as
presented.
Antoinette offered a special thank you to Lynne DeRosa for her time as the HSA Treasurer for the past 2 years. She accepted this position before her children even started school. During her term she also was a class parent, co-chaired the Santa Breakfast and helped on several other events. We all realize it was a lot of work and she did it gracefully. Lynne is about to complete her term as Treasurer. On behalf of the HSA, Antoinette thanked her.
Antoinette then wanted to give thanks to the many chairs and volunteers who helped for our year long or
seasonal programs.

Gubler who has agreed to stay on as Vice President.
Thank you also to all our parents for their generosity and time; to all the parents for serving lunch duty to
support our lunch program, all the teachers for their commitment and to Mrs. Lewis for a great year!
Treasurer Report:
Lynne stated that the Used Book Fair raised $520, the Spin Class made $400. She then thanked everyone
for being so kind to her during her Treasury term.
Principal’s Report:
Mrs. Lewis said she could not believe it was the end of the school year. She thanked everyone for being
supportive as she found her way. She hopes that moving forward everyone will be happier.
Mrs. Palmieri is feeling better and will be doing a little bit of work during the week and weekend from
home to get caught up in the year end business and we all wish her well.
Reminder there is a parent meeting on Tuesday 6/13 at 6:30 pm to review plans for next year.
The school office will be open over the summer on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (SCRIP cards will
be available for sale).
Summer Work- An overview and letter will be sent from teachers but basically Pre K through Grade 3 will
have access to a Scholastic Summer Reading program where they can read books electronically. Parents/
students are asked to keep a log of what is read. Passwords will be given out shortly. This is not
mandatory for the lower grades but this provides leveled reading over the summer (levels will be
provided before the end of the school year).
IXL and Alex for Math will also be available as part of summer work.
The upper grades will have reading assignments with tasks to do over the summer. These will be used
alongside the regular curriculum once school starts in September.
The school will no longer be using the summer math book since apparently not everyone competed it.
Parents may speak with teachers regarding other math book options for the summer so the students can
practice math.
SAB- School Advisory Board- Mrs. Lewis is looking for members to sit on the SAB. If interested, please
send her your resume/ cover letter for review. New board members are needed to be in compliance with
Lighting the Way.
$4$-Mrs. Palmieri will be working to complete a list of tasks associated with $4$ and therefore the due
date for $4$ will be extended until she completes these tasks. If you have completed your obligation
($3,000) you may apply any additional gift card purchases to the 2017-18 school year. Or you may apply
remaining amounts to this current year. Mrs. Palmieri will have the information for those who are not
sure of their outstanding balances upon her return.
Mrs. Lewis mentioned that the school is praying hard and often for Tommy.
Guest Speaker- Mrs. Rogalski- We welcomed guest speaker, Mrs. Rogalski to speak about the SES
Oratorical Program. Mrs. Rogalski was a full time Language Arts teacher then switched to full time
Librarian. Currently she is a part time Librarian at SES. As she transitioned through these roles, she
wanted to make sure the Oratorical Program remained at SES. Mrs. Denunzio, a long time 8th grade
teacher at SES, believed that it was very important to be able to speak in public. When Mrs. Denunzio
retired, she asked that the program be kept alive so Mrs. Rogalski promised she would make that
happen. Mrs. Rogalski ran the program through Language Arts then Library and now through Miss
Sirianni’s Language Arts classes.
So why do we do it? She relayed a story of a few very quiet girls from SES who claimed they could not get
up in front of their class to recite a memorized poem. Mrs. Rogalski doesn’t like to scare the kids into
doing it so she asked them to memorize the poem and present it to her after class. These students
started out as quiet kids and now are presenting and speaking publicly in high school. It was a defining
moment and she feels she made a difference in someone’s life. This gave these students the confidence
to speak in front of people.
Technically oratoricals begin in the lower grades but are not graded until 6th grade. It starts with poems
(poetry feeds the soul), The students also learn about the authors such as Robert Frost, Maya Angelou,
Emily Dickinson, Joyce Kilmer, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
It eventually leads to the 8th grade Oratorical Contest. This is where 8th graders select a 2-5 minute
speech in November. They present it to the class in January and then the top students present it on stage
in February to grades 4-8, their parents and friends. There is no teleprompter and no index cards. It is an
exciting and positive experience and many SES alumnae have expressed success in high school and
college regarding public speaking.
The contest is judged by 5 impartial adults and trophies are presented to the top 5 places. The winner
also receives a $200 scholarship check.
Students in grades 4-7 often get excited and start thinking of what speech to select when they see the
speeches presented on stage. Mrs. Rogalski also mentioned that memorization uses a part of the brain
that helps with learning.
We thanked Mrs. Rogalski for her time and we can see how passionate she is about this wonderful SES
Program and 40 year tradition.
Committee Reports
There were parent volunteer forms (also posted on line in prior e envelopes) for parents to complete in
order to volunteer next year.
Spin Class- 16 people signed up and the event made $400 in total. Thanks for participating in this fun new
event.
Used Book Fair- Maura Sullivan thanked everyone for donating used books and stated that over $500
was made. Over 1,600 books were donated and it is a fun time for parents who come and volunteer. The
books are all at a fair price. Mrs. Giunta brings those that do not sell to Paterson Schools for a good
cause. Thanks Maura and Trish!
School Play- Elizabeth Urciuoli thanked everyone for supporting the play. 22 kids participated and many
were new to the play program. Many parents helped out even a few who didn’t have kids in the play.
They tried to save as much money as they could and hoped everyone thought it was a great show.
Mrs. Lewis then said this was a transition year for the theater program. Next year the plans are to have 3
smaller performances. Grades 6-8 in the first trimester, grades 3-5 in the second trimester and then the
younger grades in the third trimester. These will be smaller performances here are SES where the kids
will learn all about theater including lighting and sound. She thanked everyone involved in the play for
their hard work and thanked Diana and Paula, the Directors, for their hard work and patience.
Dad’s Night- Maura Sullivan stated that this was the 4th year for the show and about 35 dads
participated. It raised about $1,500 plus what the DVD sales will bring in. You can still order the DVD by
sending in $10 and they will be distributed next week. All of the dads involved enjoy it. Thanks Dads!
Spring Clothing Drive- Corinne Albarella was thanked for running the Spring Clothing Drive (as well as the
Fall one). We used a new company this spring and it ran well and brought in about $1,000. Thanks
Corinne!
Field Day- Amy Nightingale discussed the upcoming Field Day (6/12). If you would like to help out from,
9:30-11:15, then please contact Amy (no athleticism is needed). It is fun and easy. The weather forecast
looks lovely. The schedule for the day is games from 9:30-11:15, then lunch and then walk to the YMCA
for swimming. There are many lifeguards at the Y to supervise the kids. Girls should wear tankinis or one
piece bathing suits (with appropriate coverage) under shorts and the boys should wear their bathing suits
with a tee shirt. Please apply sunscreen at home.
The rain date is Friday 6/16. If needed, the students will still go to the YMCA in the afternoon even
though it is a half day. Thanks Amy!
Spirit Wear- Amy Nightingale mentioned the blue and white towels will be delivered through the children
at school today. There are a handful of towels available to order so contact Amy if interested. Amy is
planning to set an order date for any items needed for the fall. The items will most likely be available on
8/31 which is the new student orientation day. More details to follow. Amy then stated that all orders
have been completed and delivered. Thanks Amy!
Track Dinner- Lyn Sittig stated that things are progressing well for the Track Dinner which is on 6/14
starting at 6:00. Zak Magic will be the DJ and the food is from Nicholas Markets, Pizzeria Mandara and
Dairy Queen. (allergy arrangements are being made if necessary). Thanks to Sue Auger for preparing the
video again. Nikki Rice has been a great help in the planning as well. We are looking forward to a fun
evening and celebrating our Track coaches.
$4$- Stephany said that we are looking to buy down inventory especially Acme, Food Town, Whole Foods
and Dunkin Donuts. You can assign any purchases towards 2017- 18 year or if you still have a balance for
2016-17 you can apply it to that. Stephany was thanked for all her work on the program.
Community Comments
Buddy Bench- A parent saw a news story about the Buddy Bench on TV and it was brought to the HSA’s
attention as a possible addition to SES. You can look on line for a full description but basically it is a bench
where a child can go to if he or she is feeling lonely and the goal is to have another child reach out and sit
next to that child for companionship and friendship. This will need to be reviewed by the new pastor and
Mrs. Lewis. If approved the HSA could pay for it. It was discussed that an educational process including
the children would need to be completed to make sure they are aware of the point of the Buddy Bench
to increase its effectiveness.
A parent brought up that she feels children are being unkind to each other at school. She proposed
starting a campaign to include parents, teachers and possibly students to bring people and ideas together
in a positive way. Mrs. Lewis discussed making changes and improvements to the overall disciplinary
code at school. She wants it to be consistent and progressive. She plans to address issues as the principal
of the school. Parents are welcome to share ideas with her and she reminded everyone that her door is
always open.
Mrs. Lewis also wanted to remind parents that children learn from what they see and hear their parents
do and say. We should be role models for our children.
Class Parent Announcement- A parent asked when the Class Parents would be announced. The list of
those who signed up are being submitted to Mrs. Lewis and the teachers for review. The teachers will
select the class parents and then the HSA Board will notify them.
Meeting adjourned 9:05.
