Vienna has been home to many of the world's greates1 composers. A list comprising Haydn, Mozart, Beetho Schubert, the Strauss family, Brahms, Mahler, Schonberg, Berg, Webern, cannot be equalled by any other city. It boasts the 'oldest' choir (Vienna Boys) ar arguably the finest opera (Vienna State) and OrchestI'li (Philharmonic) in the world. For the Viennese, music fundamental part oflife not merely a pleasant and occasional pastime. It spills over from the concert hOt to the home and all the music being performed this afternoon can be heard in the parks, beer kellers and a manner of impromptu gatherings in the city and the surrounding woods.
Franz Lehar (1870-1948) is best known for his operettas 'The Merry Widow' and 'The Count of Luxembourg' but he also wrote concert pieces such as the 'Gold and Silver Waltz~ written for a ball given by Prince Metternich in 1902. It is an extended piece, the waltzes being preceded by an introduction and concluded by a brilliant coda and it established Lehar as the successor to Johann Strauss, the son.
The suite 'Old Vienna' is drawn from the work of three locally known Viennese composers working this century and from a traditional students' song, here performed unaccompanied.
The choir is joined not by an orchestra but by an instrumental ensemble consisting of clarinets, strings and guitar, a combination derived from Joseph Schrammel (1850-93). This type of group was both flexible and portable. It could accompany voices or play by itself, as in 'In the Prater'. It was small enough to fit into ordinary houses for domestic music-making and could 'walk' from place to place, giving impromptu serenades. The music, mainly nostalgic and sentimental, praises the different virtues of the city; the beauty of the girls; the gentle breezes from the Vienna woods; the fun of the Prater with its big wheel and side shows. Vienna is not always like this, of course. It never was. Nevertheless, it remains a very lovely place and one in which it is still easy to imagine that times have changed little since the days of the Strauss family.
The two most famous members were both christened Johann. It was the father who established the dynasty and the type of music, dances and marches, which are associated with their name. He was a prolific composer but only his 'Radetzsky' March is regularly performed. The music of his son has lasted longer. Polkas like the 'Thunder and Lightning' and 'Annen', waltzes such as 'The Blue Danube' and 'Tales from the Vienna Woods' are known the world over. They epitomise, to many, the
charm and elegance of a city which does not wear its heart on its sleeve but which contrives to maintain a fruitful relationship with its past.
