Taking the Passion Personally
During the liturgy of Palm Sunday and Good Friday, the assembly has the unique experience of helping to proclaim the Gospel. Perhaps it feels strange to repeat the words of the crowd, calling for the crucifixion of Christ. Certainly we do not want Jesus to suffer. Our participation in this Gospel is an invitation to take the Passion of Jesus Christ personally. One way we do this is to examine ourselves in the light of the Gospel and discern which figures in the Gospel narrative we might resemble. Are we like Peter, who spoke enthusiastically about being faithful to Christ but then deserted him when things became difficult? Are we like Judas, who traded his faithfulness to Christ for material gain? Are we like Pilate, who tried to wash his hands of responsibility for his actions? Are we like the crowd, easily swayed from praising Christ to condemning him? Are we like Simon of Cyrene, who carried the cross only under protest, because he had to? The list of characters could go on. Hopefully we are like the Apostle John and the Virgin Mary, who remained with Jesus until the end. Hopefully we imitate Jesus himself, as he forgave his executioners from the cross. Taking the Passion personally means that we recognize our call to imitate the Lord and those who are closest to him. Taking the Passion personally also means that we remember that Jesus suffered and died for each of us. His redemptive love for us is so great that he gave his life, and then took it up again, for each of us personally. How blessed we are to be loved so much! Viviendo el Misterio Pascual de Cristo Durante la liturgia del Domingo de Ramos y el Viernes Santo, la asamblea tiene la experiencia única de ayudar a proclamar el Evangelio. Tal vez sea extraño repetir las palabras de la multitud, pidiendo la crucifixión de Cristo. Ciertamente no queremos que Jesús sufra.
Nuestra participación en este Evangelio es una invitación a vivir personalmente la Pasión de Jesucristo. Una forma en que hacemos esto es examinarnos a nosotros mismos a la luz del Evangelio y discernir a quien nos parecemos en el Evangelio? ¿Somos como Pedro, quien habló con entusiasmo acerca de ser fiel a Cristo, pero luego lo abandonó cuando las cosas se pusieron difíciles? ¿Somos como Judas, quien cambió su fidelidad a Cristo por unas cuanta monedas? ¿Somos como Poncio Pilatos, quien se lavo las manos para quitar su responsabilidad por sus acciones? ¿Somos como la multitud, que fácilmente nos dejamos convencer, y dejamos a Cristo para después condenarle? ¿Somos como Simón de Cirene, quien llevó la cruz renegando todo el tiempo, solo porque tenía que hacerlo?
La lista de personajes podría continuar. Esperemos que seamos como el apóstol Juan y la Virgen María, quienes permanecieron con Jesús hasta el final. Esperemos imitar a Jesús mismo, mientras perdonaba a sus verdugos de la cruz. Vivir la Pasión de Cristo personalmente significa que reconocemos nuestro llamado a imitar al Señor y a los que están más cerca de él.
Vivir la Pasión de Cristo personalmente también significa que recordamos que Jesús sufrió y murió por cada uno de nosotros. Su amor redentor por nosotros es tan grande que dio su vida, y luego la retomó, para cada uno de nosotros. ¡Cuán bendecidos somos por ser amados, tanto! Con gratitud acompañamos al Señor durante esta Semana Santa.

TUESDAY APRIL 16 (not on Good Friday this year) at 7:00 p.m. in the Church
What are Lamentations? A lamentation is a human response to pain, a crying out to God in faith until help arrives. Lamentations are found throughout Scripture and are focused on human suffering and injustice as a continuation of Christ’s suffering. Why should we pray Lamentations? We come together to lament with anyone who is suffering from pain or loss, anyone who stands with others who are suffering, anyone who feels the pain and suffering of the world. What do we gain from praying Lamentations? Our purest response is hope, love and compassion which in turn empower us to be agents of change for Christ in the transformation of the world. Who should participate? What will the prayer service be like? This will be a truly memorable evening, full of music, readings, images and places for adults and mature teens to weep over the injustices and absurdities of life. Anyone who is grieving or hurting from losses here at the parish, in personal life challenges, or simply desires to become closer to Christ should be sure to come. (Please do not bring young children).

IRS rules mandate that individuals age 70 1/2 and older take RMDs from their IRA each year, regardless of whether the income is needed. These annual withdrawals are subject to ordinary income taxes. By making a charitable contribution from your IRA, you can satisfy your RMD amount without reporting additional income.
