FROM THE PASTOR
THE LEAST COMMANDMENT
We know Jesus’ answer to the question about the greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. And the second this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But there are other commandments, great and small—from the Lord Jesus himself, or from his predecessor Moses. We know Moses’ top “Ten Commandments,” of which the last seems to be a relatively small matter: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.” And yet, much of our modern society is built on wanting what other people have: • Advertising works because it makes us want what is advertised, and most of our world-class
entertainment industry is built on advertising. • Competition is said to keep our labor and industry effective—we even substitute the word,
“competitive”—but competition is often about making sure we get ahead of everyone else. • Education is frequently intended for the development of leadership—by which we mean,
people who will be more successful or more admired than others. • Politics degenerates into the cultivation of envy: “Vote for me and I’ll stop those immigrants
from taking your jobs,” “Vote for me and I’ll stop those fat-cats from getting too fat,” and “Vote for me and I’ll stop those Chinese from stealing your business.”
Occasionally we taste what it would be like to live without coveting. Healthy families are able to be happy with the success of one member, simply for the sake of the one. We might rejoice at the prosperity of a good friend. Or in a general way, we might celebrate the good fortune of large groups of people—say, our neighborhood, or our region, or our country. But could we live without any greed or envy? To be content with a simple home instead of a palace? A meal of beans and rice instead of daily meat? A classic book from the library instead of cable television? An old Fiat or a bus pass instead of the latest hybrid crossover vehicle? Our economy might dive into steep decline. But then again, the economy might not be so important, if we didn’t need so much. And to spend fewer hours at work, fewer hours on the entertainments of the rich, fewer dollars trying to be better than the next guy—maybe we’d all be happier. “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”
—Fr. Dave
Please remember that Luke Briola leads the ecumenical Lenten Prayer Service at St. John Lutheran at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, March 2. He’ll be speaking on mercy. Lunch is free, courtesy of SEAS Parish Ladies of Charity, but there’ll be a free-will offering taken up at the prayer service.

Evangelization, prayer, and mercy ... they're all connected! As we pray for each other during this Holy Season of
Lent, and in this Year of Mercy, let us recall one of the messages that St. Maria Faustina Kowalska recorded in her
diary as something Jesus spoke to her in her heart:
Jesus' Call to MercyJesus' Call to MercyJesus' Call to MercyJesus' Call to Mercy "I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and
everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it.
I am giving you three ways of exercising mercy toward your neighbor: the first — by deed, the second — by word, the third — by
prayer. In these three degrees is contained the fullness of mercy, and it is an unquestionable proof of love for Me. By this means a
soul glorifies and pays reverence to My mercy." ~ St. Faustina
So, if we are not able to perform deeds for, or speak directly to those who are asking us for prayer, we CAN still pray for them, and
that, in itself, is an act of mercy. Let's include those who have no one to pray for them.
St. Faustina, pray for us!

THANK YOU! Many thanks to the families who participated in last week’s Family Night! We began the evening by thinking about people who need our prayers. The families created a “masterpiece” of prayer intentions with post-it notes on four different display boards on a table in Holy Family Hall. Each board represented a different category where prayers may be needed. Then it was on to the second portion of the night: The students and teachers transformed their classrooms into mini learning centers, while parents took some time to chat with Steve Geitgey about Lent. Afterwards, each family was handed a different color-coded map and envelope and traveled specific patterns from class to class seeking knowledge and receiving puzzle pieces along the way. The Mayor was our official time-keeper and kept the traffic flowing through this tightly scheduled activity. The students did a terrific job helping the parents seek clues to our greatest treasure: the Mass! Each class presented a part of the Mass with facts, history, worksheets, and
even family challenges to take home. The parents left with full envelopes of information, and a puzzle that outlined the Mass. We ended the evening back in the church where our prayer intentions were now displayed in the four corners of the church. Each family was asked to silently visit each corner at their own pace and read and pray for the intentions listed. We left in silence. Thank you catechists, aides, and substitutes for a memorable event!
