This initiative shows the Hospice’s commitment to such national drives as the Department of Health’s “Dignity in Care” campaign and the Welsh Government’s consultation report “Delivering End of Life Care” and is in line with fellow hospices throughout the U.K. who now provide single rooms for patients. Single rooms will provide patients with privacy, and a space to spend time with their loved ones. This is especially important at a stage of their illness when time is precious. The Inpatients Unit “make over” will also include a lovely relative’s lounge, improved laundry and storage facilities, staff areas, a new covered entrance vestibule, and updated security measures. The Day Care Unit has also benefited from the build, resulting in an open-plan, yet warm and inclusive space where patients can sit and chat, participate in games and arts and crafts, or simply rest and relax in good company and care. Our wonderful lunches will still be available to patients in a dedicated dining area. The complementary therapy, treatment and rest rooms will be updated, and the staff will benefit from a more modern office space. There will be an improved education suite on the first floor of the building. This is entirely appropriate for a specialist unit such as St David’s, and will aid us in staging events for local care-givers, enabling us to share knowledge, and also to keep our own staff updated. The Fundraising and Lottery Team will move to the ground floor of the Hospice, at the front of the building, and will be more accessible to the public. The team would like to thank the community in supporting us in this venture. It has meant a lot to us. We have already received many positive responses to the new build, from service users, both new and old - thank you. dA Letter From The Chairman

Three years ago, the Board of Trustees presented their development

plan to provide all single room accommodation for patients and

families, extend the bed provision from 11 to 14 and enhance the

education facilities for our staff.

The previous editions of our newsletter have shared this major

development, showing decisions and milestones as they progressed.

We launched our ‘Helping Hands’ appeal to start us off and have

seen a flurry of fundraising activities to help us along the way. Our

faith in your commitment to us has been justified as we near the

completion of the huge complex task of keeping our doors open

whilst the building work progresses.

We are almost there. November will see our patients nursed in rooms

that provide the privacy we feel they should have as their right and

maintain the dignity that they deserve.

It has been a leap of faith by us that you would continue to support

the Hospice in raising its much needed funds and although this need

is on-going, you can be very proud of your contribution to this project.

I look forward to celebrating with you the opening of our new

Hospice accommodation and hope you will join us when we invite

you to share in your success in keeping St David’s Hospice at the

forefront of patient care.

Thank you Gladys Harrison, Chairman

As a Clinical Team, we are delighted that our Inpatient Unit is being changed to all single room occupancy.

Diversional Therapy in the Day Care Unit For those coping with a serious illness, focusing on something else, for however short a period, can provide much needed relief and relaxation.

Many of our patients find their symptoms prevent them from doing activities they previously enjoyed. Diversional therapy (through the medium of art and craft work) can be very therapeutic. It often enables patients to explore new talents and discover new interests to replace those which are no longer open to them.

Diversional Therapist, Glynis Lloyd-Wallis, says ’We encourage patients to take part in creative activities. Through the therapy, we are able to aid with dexterity and social interaction skills which lead to a sense of fulfilment for the patient. Many of them discover hidden talents!’.

The ethos of Day Care - The essential factor in caring support

Some years ago I came to the Hospice;my son exhibited some photographsto help a Hospice fundraising event.

I little thought that I should find the needto enter its doors to seek help myself.

It soon became an element of life, continuing from week to week to grow.

The offering was many tentacled, designed throughout to help a troubled mind. The strong supportive social framework here

that enhanced therapies and other care.

With my background of Psychology (Ed)I had no choice but to set to work at once

and seek to analyse the nature ofthe all-pervading ethos so soon found. My tentative conclusions pointed to

an inspired leadership, with faith at heart,of teams of varied skill and common cause,

concern for patient interest and care. All leading to creation of a power

engendering a wonderful self-peace.With the ready change of views patients and staff

at serious level often touched with a laugh.

I close with purely personal remarksI’ve always greatly enjoyed Wednesdays here.

Two weeks ago was one I shan’t forget. The morning greeting included the remark,“Hello Gordon, Ward 5, Glan Clwyd, 07”,

I took it in the positive meaning! The day progressed better by “Chaplain Chat”

at tea time the room seemed rather full,a figure in the doorway called for quiet.

And to my great surprise she spoke“A Happy Birthday Gordon, from your friends”

a slice of cake, a lovely card and claps.I felt so happy and content ’mongst friends.

Thank you for your help on which that thought depends.

Gordon Lowden

Mother and Son, Christine and Nigel Lowden, have presented St David’s Hospice with a selection of pictures, in memory of Gordon. Nigel’s stunning photographs, which depict North Wales scenery and local flora and fauna, will be used to decorate bedrooms and the walls of the new development.

Nigel said ‘My father attended the Day Care Unit and always enjoyed his time there. i’m pleased to be able to donate something that i hope will give enjoyment and add colour to patient’s rooms and the new development’.

Sadly, Gordon’s health deteriorated and he was admitted to the inpatient Unit for end of life care.

Gordon’s wife Christine added ‘Donating the photographs is our way of saying ‘thank you’. We shall be eternally grateful for the varied professional skills and emotional support we all experienced. We extend our whole-hearted gratitude to everyone who contributed to Gordon’s care.’

KEEpINg THE LOTTERy WHEELS TURNINg OvER THE pAST 15 yEARS… In 1997, our first task was to recruit a team of 30 canvassers. Their job, and ours in those early days, was to sign up as many new members as possible. We are the only charity Lottery to offer a cash collection option in many areas throughout North West Wales. Each week our collectors collect from over 4000 people all over the region.

We are always thankful for the help of Hospice volunteers who keep us in touch with our members by preparing and sending out our winners’ cheques, letters to members, and our ever-popular Dewi or Dewina Bears.

We have a very hard working door-to-door canvasser, Brigid Hill, who calls on homes all over North West Wales, introducing the Hospice to

the householders, and explaining how they can help us thrive. We also occasionally use telephone sales and, from time to time when we invite our members to take out a second or extra number.

When I reached 65, I reduced my working week to three days. Now that I am nearly 67 I have decided it’s nearly time to pass the baton on. By the time you read this my successor should have been appointed, and we will work in tandem from January 2013 until I retire in March 2013. I consider myself fortunate indeed to have finished my working career with this period of helping the Hospice - I have been privileged to work with some great colleagues and volunteers, and it’s been great fun!

Tom Williams, Hospice Lottery Co-ordinator

The St David’s Hospice shop in Rhos-on-Sea celebrates its 15th birthday this year. The shop on Penrhyn Avenue opened its doors back in June 1997 and has contributed over £675,000 to the Hospice.

Shop Team Leader, Joe Hayes says, “To reach the 15th year is a great achievement and I’d like to thank all the volunteers who have helped over the years and also the local people who have generously supported with fantastic quality donations”.

Dianne Hodgson, who lives in Rhos, has been volunteering at the shop for the past seven years.

“I enjoy giving my time. The work is varied from keeping the shop clean and tidy, putting out new stock to working on the till.”

“One of my roles at the shop is to organise the jewellery items which I sort, clean, repair, price and display. It is a real pleasure to work there, especially making money to help keep the Hospice open.” she added.

Rhos-on-Sea was one of the first Hospice shops to open. It now forms part of 10 across North West Wales. (Llandudno, Llandudno Junction, Craig y Don, Conwy, Colwyn Bay, Llanrwst, Bangor, Porthmadog and Beaumaris).

Our Lottery prize pot is as follows:

• 1st prize £2000 each week

• 2nd prize is the Rollover, (which goes up by £200 per week until it reaches £5000, when it becomes a guaranteed prize).

• 3rd prize £100 each week

• 40 x £5 prizes each week

If you win we send you a cheque. Simples! Each week a list of our winners can be found in your local newspaper, or on the Hospice website.

FUNDRAISING D

IARY Buy a plastic Carrier

Bag and Support St David’s Hospice

St David’s Hospice is benefiting from the 5p plastic carrier bag tax introduced in Oct 2011, as supermarkets and high street stores donate the proceeds to our good cause.

Five pence per bag might not seem much, but multiplied by the number of bags sold and the number of retailers who choose us as their charity, it adds up to a healthy sum very quickly. Over £8177 has been raised for St David’s Hospice in the last 12 months since the introduction of the scheme.

Wendy Clark, Community Fundraising Team Leader says, ‘We would be delighted to hear from local businesses who would like to make St David’s Hospice the beneficiary of the carrier bag levy this year. We can provide a branded collection can for the coins and posters to display, if requested’.

For further information please contact the Fundraising Dept. on 01492 873665.

I have been a Trustee of the Hospice for six years now and since 2009 have chaired the Clinical Governance Committee which

has a responsibility to ensure that the Hospice has the right people, the right equipment and the right systems to deliver continually improving specialist palliative care to our patients and their families.

My interest and commitment in this area follows naturally from my previous work as a Consultant Surgeon specializing in breast and endocrine (especially thyroid and parathyroid) conditions for 20 years at Glan Clwyd Hospital. Up until the end of 2007 – when I retired fully - I also worked for the NHS Breast Cancer National Screening Programme (Breast Test Wales) at Llandudno General Hospital.

My remaining surgical commitment is teaching in London and Cardiff on the Royal College

of Surgeons’ courses on basic surgical skills. I believe it is both important and inspiring to help young surgeons acquire safe practical surgical skills at the start of their careers.

We have an excellent voluntary Board of Trustees. Each member brings his or her own expertise and experience which together ensures the Hospice has the means to provide a first class specialist palliative care service for the people of North West Wales. It is a privilege to be a part of that process.

Trustee Spotlight Dr Chris Davies

Intrepid hikers Gary Williams, Geraint Spearing, Chris Williams, Niel Jones and Tony Martin braved snowy conditions to scale 4,409ft Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands.

Gary Williams tells us about the challenge …

My mother, Joyce, was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer. I got to experience at first hand the tremendous care and support St David’s Hospice provided for my mother, and my family. With this in mind, I decided to organise the Ben Nevis Challenge. Research warned us that tackling ‘The Ben’ before early June was not for the inexperienced. However given my Mother’s worsening condition at the time, we choose to go on 21st April – I really wanted my mother to be here when we got to the top.

After a couple of training walks up Snowdon, armed with our new mountaineering gear, we set off on the long journey to Fort William. A visit to the Information Centre highlighted the challenge we had set ourselves. The top half

of the mountain was covered in snow, lying up to seven foot at the peak, and hiring crampons was a definite recommendation.

The evening before the trek presented us with feelings of trepidation and excitement. Outweighing all of this was the desire to succeed and be able to collect all of the sponsorship pledges we had gathered. It was going to be a real challenge, but nothing compared to what the patients go through in their battle to fight cancer.

Rucksacks heavy with supplies, and dressed ready for the conditions, we set off on the infamous Tourist Path. For the first hour, we walked in a fine drizzle and winds that did a great job of getting us wet, but had no chance of dampening our spirits.

With temperatures plunging, we kept on walking. As we hit the snow line and approached the peak, it started to snow quite heavily and visibility was poor. It really was tough going as we got closer

to the summit. As we reached the highest point in the UK, there were hugs all round and tears of joy in all our eyes.

Sadly, my mother had passed away in February; I know how proud she would have been. Our goal was met and we raised a fantastic sum - £10,711.62! The Hospice is an amazing place and will be in all of our hearts forever.

Scaling Ben Nevis to raise cash for St David’s Hospice

A Caring Cuppa Volunteering, friendship, dedication and hard work are the ingredients that go into making a Llandudno Tea Bar such a fundraising success.

Based at the Magistrates Court since 2003, a small team of devoted volunteers led by Sandy Halliday have raised £37,200 to date for St David’s Hospice.

Open 9am until noon, five days a week, they provide refreshments for those who attend the court, along with those who work there.

Kathleen Isherwood from Craig y Don, who often bakes scones to sell, has served over the counter since it opened. She says. “I really enjoy it, I like to be able to help the Hospice. It is a good cause.”

The Hospice would like to take this opportunity to thank the Tea Bar volunteers for all their continued support over the years and for doing such a sterling job.

After ten years at St David’s Hospice, Dr Hugh Leask has retired.

He has made an extremely valuable contribution to the development of the Hospice and will be very much missed by everyone.

We wish him all the best and hope he enjoys his extra time to play with his iPad. We look forward to seeing him in Café Dewi soon.
