Transfer Talks

Supporting Black Student Initiatives at RooseveltIn response to the protests surrounding police violence against the Black community, Roosevelt has had many discussions about how our community can support Black students. As a starting point, we recently held an open forum for the community to hear from our students, faculty, staff and alumni to

begin a dialogue about what must change in the future. We will hold similar webinars in July to keep these conversations going. Dates and topics will be announced soon.

Additional opportunities for our students to build community and achieve their academic and professional goals, include the Black Student Union (BSU), which welcomes all students – not limited to students of color – to create an environment that encourages learning and improvement; the Black Male Leadership Academy, which builds leadership skills and the intellectual, cultural and social capital of young Black men in Chicago; and Roosevelt’s partnership with the Illinois Equity in Attainment Initiative (ILEA), which guides our work to eliminate gaps in completion rates between White students and students of color.

Roosevelt Launches Black Student Equity FundIn early June, Roosevelt established the Black Student Equity Fund and raised close to $50,000. This fund will support the Office of Multicultural Student Support Services through scholarships, educational programming, student activities and events. One of several scholarships that the

University created to financially support Black students, Roosevelt has also spearheaded the New Era Grant, which has actively recruited 30 new students for the upcoming fall semester to the Robert Morris Experiential College. This grant is an important tool to attract Black students in partnership with Chicago Public Schools.

Student Assistance Funds at Roosevelt UniversityRoosevelt’s students have expressed that finances were their number one concern about returning to campus this fall. Our variety of funding options for students experiencing COVID-19-related financial hardships have provided substantial monetary assistance for those in need.

Students can apply for the following Emergency Funding grants:

CARES Act – A governmental fund to aid students who’ve experienced a financial disruption related to the transition to online learning

Student Emergency Assistance Fund (Laker Grant) – A series of Roosevelt grants which help students experiencing financial hardships

Stronger Tuition Grant – A one-time grant for students with a sudden increase in financial need due to illness, unemployment or other hardships.

Upcoming Guidelines for Returning to CampusRoosevelt will be announcing guidelines around a safe return to our campus, along with details for this fall semester’s in-person classes. More information will be provided soon. Stay up-to-date via our COVID-19 Updates web page.

There’s Still Time to Apply for Fall 2020The admission application for the fall semester is still open. Encourage your students to submit their applications for admission into Roosevelt at roosevelt.edu/apply. For more information, contact the Office of Admission at [email protected].
