NOTE:Because the bulletin goes to print on Tuesdays, information in it may not be accurate by Sunday. Please check the website, www.stguerinparish.org, for the most up to date information.

Dear Parishioners,

Last week we were able to enter Phase 1 of the church reopening plan, safely welcoming parishioners and their families for two funerals and Reconciliation. Now we are certified to enter Phase 2, when public Masses may resume if parishes are ready. This weekendwe will offer three public Masses on Sunday, June 14: 7:30 AM at St. Celestine, 9 AM at St. Cyprian, and 10:30 AM at St. Celestine. We were asked by the Cardinal to limit attendance, to 50 at St. Celestine and 35 at St. Cyprian.

For now, reservations are necessary to attend Mass with sign up through SignUpGenius.com. A specific link is posted on our website. You do not need to have an account with this website to register for mass, but you will be asked for your name, phone number, email, and the number of people from your household who will be attending together. You may register for Sunday Masses starting at 5 PM on the Wednesday before.

Please note:· If you have a fever or feel ill, have an underlying medical condition, or are in a risky population, please do not come to church. The requirement to attend weekly mass has been lifted and we will still live–stream the 10:30 AM Mass so those who are not able to attend can still participate in Mass.

· Strict social distancing will be observed for all Masses and you must wear your own mask the entire time in Church.

· Enter St. Cyprian through the doors off the parking lot and St. Celestine through the 76th Court entrance.

· Entry will only be granted to those registered. Please arrive at church 15 minutes early to allow for check–in.

· Parishioners will be met at the door by trained volunteers and hand sanitizer will be provided as you enter.

· You will be directed to specific seating in the Church. Only some sections of the church will be used to facilitate thorough cleaning between Masses and to ensure your safety. We ask that you do not move from the assigned seat and follow the directions of the ushers and greeters at all times.

· Hymnals or other worship aids will not be provided. Collection baskets will not be passed. Offerings may be left by the doors as you arrive or leave (or you may donate online through GiveCentral.org).

· The priest and ushers will direct you for the reception of Communion which is only available in the hand.

· At the end of Mass you will be dismissed by the usher and must exit the church immediately in the order they direct. No congregating in the church or on the grounds is allowed.

As we see what works well at St. Mother Guerin, we will determine our readiness to increase the number of Masses and the number of parishioners we can accommodate in our churches in accordance with safety guidelines. We will let you know when we can resume daily Mass. Please check our website and Facebook page for updates.

We need many volunteers for greeters, ushers, and cleaners for Masses and sacramental celebrations. Our ability to increase the amount of Masses is dependent on having enough volunteers to meet the Archdiocese requirements to assure safety. I know that many of you over 65 wish to volunteer. If you are healthy and do not have any underlying medical condition, you can volunteer. Please go to our parish website homepage and click on the Parish Reopening Volunteer Online Form. We will contact you for training.

We were certified under the condition that we MUST follow all Archdiocesan directives in order to open the churches at all. We cannot change the rules. Please try to be positive and don’t argue with the volunteers over guidelines we cannot control. The Archdiocese will be evaluating what happens and modifying procedures in the weeks ahead. These rules are meant to keep us all safe during the pandemic.

In Christ’s love,Fr. Paul and the St. Mother Guerin Reopening Leadership Team

SUNDAY READINGS June 14, 2020 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

READING 1 Dt 8:2–3, 14b–16aMoses said to the people: “Remember how for forty years now the LORD, your God, has directed all your journeying in the desert, so as to test you by affliction and find out whether or not it was your intention to keep his commandments. He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna, a food unknown to you and your fathers, in order to show you that not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.

"Do not forget the LORD, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery; who guided you through the vast and terrible desert with its saraph serpents and scorpions, its parched and waterless ground; who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock and fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your fathers.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps 147:12–13, 14–15, 19–20R. (12) Praise the Lord, Jerusalem OR or: Alleluia.

READING 2 1 Cor 10:16–17Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

GOSPEL Jn 6:51–58Jesus said to the Jewish crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”Excerpts from the Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, second typical edition © 2001, 1998, 1997, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc., Washington, DC. ST. ROMUALD (c. 951—1027)

June 19

“God so loved the world,” declares John 3:16. “Do not love the world,” warns 1 John 2:15. The “world” to love: this planet, entrusted to our stewardship, and its people, God’s children all. The “world” to flee: “sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life” (1 John 2:16). Born in nobility, Romuald’s conversion followed the shock of witnessing his father murder an enemy. Renouncing his privileged world, Romuald sought God’s world in monastic life. Its winding turns and several dead ends make Romuald’s journey resonate with all who find life more maze than superhighway.

Both the hermit’s solitary struggle and community life’s unique challenges shaped Romuald’s legacy: his vast Camaldolese Benedictine family of monks, nuns, and lay associates who, these thousand years later, from the mountain solitude of Camaldoli, Italy to an urban monastery in Berkeley, California—in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe—integrate Romuald’s experience into their witness of solitary prayer, communal charity and worship, and promotion of contemplative spirituality in this world that can so easily distract us from the God who loves it still.

FOOD FROM HEAVEN God sustained the people of Israel for forty years in the desert with manna sent down from heaven, and Moses doesn’t want them to forget it. God brought forth water from stone for them to drink, and Moses doesn’t want them to forget this, either. And Moses tells them—twice—that the food that God sent was a food that neither they nor their ancestors before them had ever experienced before.

Jesus too speaks of food come down from heaven, food that the Jewish people had never experienced before. Recalling the manna in the desert, Jesus doesn’t want them to forget it either, explaining that he is the food and drink of eternal life. And Paul reiterates to the Corinthians and to all of us that in the bread and in the cup, we share in the body and blood of Christ.

ON FOOD IN THE PANDEMIC, AND THE REAL PRESENCEstguerinparish.org 6

Before retiring last year, I did most of the grocery shopping in our household. With my wife’s evening (dental office) hours, it

just worked out that way. After the coronavirus took everything south, though, I’m now alone in the task. Gail has offered to go, but I heard a doctor on one

of those pandemic TV shows say that, virus control–wise, it’s best for the same person in any given sheltering–in–place household to go out for groceries. This made sense to me. So while I was pretty much the guy before, I’m totally the guy now.

And on another pandemic show I heard a nutritionist say that she always keeps a good supply of long shelf–life vegetables on hand like potatoes, broccoli, and bell peppers. I gave myself props here because I maintain a similar supply. And lest you think I eschew choices beyond produce, I was bummed the other day in the ice cream aisle with no Haagen Dazs Rum Raisin to be had. Not a single pint, which is all I wanted. I love this stuff, but I buy it only when it’s on sale. It was on sale. Seems I’m not alone in the craving…

And there’s an eternal craving we’ve all been dealing with as of late: Eucharist. I’m on a tight deadline for this (Body and Blood of Christ) column, so as I write this, our churches are still

closed, and communion is still off the table. But Eucharist is central to the Archdiocese’s plan: “Everything possible should be done to provide people the solace of the church’s sacramental life in a timely and reasonable way.” We see protesters on TV saying “Open the churches now!” I’m not one of them. I’m saying, “God bless Cardinal Cupich.“

And while I’m at it, God bless Bishop Barron of Los Angeles, too. Not long ago, a friend sent me a link to the bishop’s talk on the Real Presence at a religious ed session in LA. Here, Barron highlighted recent research showing that nearly 70% of Catholics don’t believe that Eucharist is Jesus’ body and blood. Instead, per Barron, these Catholics say that “Jesus is only symbolically present in the bread and wine.” Can you blame them? because as the Jews argue in today’s Gospel, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Well…

This would have been the time for Jesus to say “Wait. That’s not what I meant.” Instead, he double–amens ’em: "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” Barron references Church fathers over the centuries confirming the truth of this teaching, but nothing speaks truer to me than Catholic writer Flannery O’Connor’s response to a colleague’s dinner–time suggestion that the Eucharist is a powerful symbol: “Well, if it’s only a symbol, I say to hell with it.” Wow. As Barron puts it in his Catholicism, “I can’t imagine a better summary of the Catholic doctrine of the Real Presence.” That TV nutritionist said we should be all–in for long shelf–life foods. OK. “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.” Hmmmm… Like you, I’m looking forward to the feast

HERE I AM—KEEPING CONNECTED AT ST. MOTHER GUERIN

In anticipation of creating a more robust communication system, we are launching “Here I Am—Keeping Connected @St. Mother Guerin.” With a simple Google form that we are asking all parishioners who receive this message to fill out, we can make sure we have the most current information for all members of our faith family.

By answering these few simple questions, it will help us ensure you are receiving important information as it becomes available and allow the parish records to be updated as appropriate. There is also a final question that allows you to put forward anything you’d like held in prayer by the priests at their daily masses.

Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to complete this! You can fill it out on the website at https://stguerinparish.org/keeping–connected/.

Teach us to remember their sacrifices and to express our gratitude.Manifest your tender care to those in the Military Academies who prepare for future service and to those who serve our Nation far from home. Teach us to remember the sacrifices of those whose efforts contribute to ensuring our way of life. Hear us as we present our prayers to You through Christ our Lord. Amen. Archbishop Timothy Broglio

Please keep those serving in the military in your prayers. Thank you for your service to our country.
