First Sunday of Advent
“Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 122)
Retirement Fund for Religious Collection Next Weekend In the United States today, there are more than 33,000 sen-
ior Catholic religious sisters, brothers, and order priests. These reli-
gious worked tirelessly in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies,
usually for little or no pay. As a result, many religious communities
lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. For more infor-
mation please read the insert in today’s church paper or visit
www.retiredreligious.org.
Next weekend a special collection will be taken up in all
Catholic parishes of our country allowing us the opportunity to support the Retire-
ment Fund for Religious which helps provide prescription medications, nursing care,
and more. Envelopes for this collection may be found in the pew racks of the church
and can be returned next weekend with your contribution. Please give to those who
made a positive difference in so many lives. Thank you for your continued support
and prayers for our senior Catholic religious sisters, brothers, and order priests.
Sorting and Packing Toys On Monday, December 2nd, we will be sorting and packing toys for
St. Leo’s Christmas Party. Please join us at 10:00 am in the Social
Area to work on this fun project. All are welcome!!
Toys Needed-Due This Weekend St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen in Detroit is again looking for toys for the Children’s
Christmas Party they host at the beginning of December. These toys do not have a
tag on the Giving Tree in the Gathering Space. Toys for all ages are needed and are
to be returned to the Gathering Space by December 1st. These gifts are to be un-
wrapped. Thank you for all you do to help those in need!
Advent Giving Tree-Last Weekend for Tags Advent is HERE! Our Advent Giving Tree will be
helping those in need. We will be helping St. Al’s, Capuchin
After School Program, Loaves and Fishes, Our Lady of Guada-
lupe Parish, The Lennon Center, the Toy Drive for St. Leo’s,
Sister Judie’s Outreach, Jail Ministry, and gift certificates to
help with last minute requests. This is the final weekend for
Giving Tree Tags to be available (November 30th/December 1st). If you have any
questions, please call the Christian Service Office at 734-464-4436.

Christmas Offering Please consider making a
significant offering to St. Colette
Parish at Christmas via the Christ-
mas collection. It is the one col-
lection the entire dollar amount
remains directly here at the parish.
The rest of the donations the parish
receives throughout the year are
subject to a 7% assessment by the Archdiocese of Detroit.
The money collected by the assessment as well as the an-
nual Catholic Services Appeal assist the Archdiocese with
their diocesan-wide ministries, programs and offices.
However, all the funds collected in the Christmas collec-
tion remain here in the parish and are not assessed.
Given the rising costs of maintaining a parish
plant and all our services, every additional dollar is truly
appreciated. Thank you for your generous support and
consideration.
Christmas Wafers Christmas wafers (oplatki)
are now available at the parish of-
fice during our regular office hours:
Monday – Thursday, 9:00 am – 12
Noon, 1:00 – 5:00 pm and on Fri-
day, 9:00 am – 12 Noon, 1:00 – 3:00 pm. There are
three wafers per package and the suggested donation is
$1.00 per package.

Advent/Christmas Reflection
Books and CD’s A popular way to keep the Seasons
of Advent and Christmas is by using the
blue covered Reflection Books offered by our parish.
These books offer daily reflections for the Season of
Advent and upcoming Season of Christmas.
New this year are copies of the CD “Ignite Your
Journey” which contains music and reflections for Ad-
vent and Christmas. These CDs are made available to us
free of charge thanks to the generosity of the Dr. Thom-
as Dooley Knights of Columbus.
Copies of the Reflection Books and “Ignite Your
Journey” CDs were available last weekend in the Gath-
ering Space of the church and on the window sill to the
right of the altar. Copies of both may still be available.
Please limit one reflection book and CD per family.
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
Sunday, December 1st
In Church After the 12 Noon Mass The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is in-
tended for anyone seven years and older who is chronically
ill, undergoing medical testing or surgery, disabled by dis-
ease, age or addiction, or is affected by psychological or
emotional problems. As the title states, this is a sacrament
for the sick and not the dying!
If you are in need of celebrating the Sacrament of
the Anointing of the Sick, please join others this Sunday,
December 1st after the 12 Noon Mass at approximately
1:15 pm. To receive the sacrament please be seated in one
of the front pews of the church. The celebration of the sac-
rament will begin once everyone is assembled and depend-
ing on the number being anointed the ritual should take
approximately 20 – 30 minutes.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is cel-
ebrated in our church every month (usually the first Sun-
day). Contact the parish office to make arrangements for
the celebration of this sacrament at other times.
Adopt a Seminarian with Your Prayers Our parish provides small prayer cards which include a photo of an Archdiocese of Detroit
seminarian on one side and a vocation prayer on the opposite side. These cards are new and represent
the seminarians who are in formation for the current academic year of 2019 – 2020. If you participat-
ed in this program in previous years those old cards may be obsolete so everyone is invited to receive
a new one.
The prayer cards are available in the Gathering Space of the church on the vocations table and
on the counter top near one of the bulletin boards as well as on the window sill to the right of the altar. Please receive
one (or more) of the cards and “adopt” that seminarian with your prayers.

Pastor’s Corner Today the universal Church begins a new liturgical year with the Season of Advent. From the First Sunday of
Advent until December 16th, the emphasis of Advent is to direct our minds and hearts to await Christ’s Second Coming
at the end of time. From December 17th and afterwards Advent is a time to prepare us for Christmas when Christ’s first
coming to us is remembered.
Of all the seasons of the Church’s liturgical year, Advent is by far the most difficult to observe. We know it is
to be a time of preparation for the Lord’s coming, yet all around us our contemporary culture is already celebrating
Christmas with the singing of Christmas carols, attending parties and decorating houses and places of business. Instead
of preparing for Christmas and then celebrating it, today many people both prepare and celebrate at the same time! We
get so caught up with the commercial elements of the holiday season we forget the deeper religious significance.
Like the increasing darkness of each day in late November and early December our churches during Advent are
void of any extra decorations. The “Glory to God” at weekend Masses is omitted during Advent so we may look for-
ward to the glory that is to come. Our only seasonal decoration in church is the Advent Wreath with it candles and ev-
ergreen branches reminding us of the approaching glory of God’s redemption and Kingdom. In our personal lives we
are challenged to pray more, take time to read Scripture, perhaps celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation by going to
confession, and to participate in works of Christian charity.
The Season of Advent is a popular time for Catholics to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation by the con-
fession of our sins and receiving absolution. Once again the Catholic parishes of Livonia are sponsoring two Advent
Communal Penance Services with Individual Confessions: Monday, December 16th at 7:00 pm here at St. Colette
Church and on Saturday, December 21st at 1:00 pm at St. Edith Church. If you need to celebrate the Sacrament of Rec-
onciliation before Christmas, please participate in one of these two services. For other opportunities to celebrate the
Sacrament of Reconciliation please refer the schedule printed in the Northwest Wayne Vicariate Newsletter and posted
on the vicariate website at nwwv.org.
This Advent I encourage you to use the Advent Reflection Books and the Advent Reflection CDs that were
made available last weekend (and may still be available this weekend). Please participate in the Advent Giving Tree
Project and perform other acts of Christian charity. Try not to decorate your home too early with Christmas decora-
tions. In years past many families didn’t start decorating their homes until after December 17th when our observance of
Advent concentrates on remembering Christ’s first coming at Christmas. Whatever you do, try to maintain the holiness
of the Season as we prepare our hearts for the coming of the Lord.
On December 8th the Catholic Church observes the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. This observance is so important that it is recognized as a Holyday of Obligation for Catholics to celebrate
Mass. However, this year December 8th is on a Sunday and in the Church’s order for the liturgical year the observance
of the Second Sunday of Advent takes precedence over the observance of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
Therefore, the observance of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to the next day, namely Mon-
day December 9th. When the observance is transferred, the obligation to celebrate Mass is not transferred. So please
note Catholics are not obligated to celebrate Mass on Monday, December 9th in observance of the Solemnity of the Im-
maculate Conception. Those desiring to do so are encouraged to celebrate the 9:00 am Mass on Monday, December
9th.
Have a blessed Advent,
Fr. Gary
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Monday, December 9th
Mass at 9:00 am
Since the observance is transferred from December 8th to December 9th,
Catholics are dispensed from the obligation to celebrate Mass.
If you will be participating at the 9:00 am Mass, please do not park your car at the medi-
cal professional building parking lot north of the church. Those parking spaces are needed for
patients who have doctors’ appointments in the morning of December 9th. Thank you.

Word on Fire Series -New Series Starting
THIS WEEK- ALL ABOUT ADVENT The Church season of Advent is about preparing
ourselves for the coming celebration of Christmas.
Lives get very busy preparing for and celebrating the
secular side of this holiday, but how about giving up ten
minutes a day to prepare your heart for the religious/
spiritual side of this historic event. Word on Fire has a
series that will help us prepare for and celebrate the sea-
son of Advent. Filled with all sorts of wonderful infor-
mation and inspiration, it will teach us about the history
of Advent and give us new ideas and traditions to try.
Starting on December 1st you will receive a short vid-
eo every day for ten days. Save them and watch them all
at once, or take a few moments out of each day to focus
on the coming of Christ, it’s up to you. Topics include:
What is Bambinelli Sunday? Why Purple and Pink?
What is Gaudette Sunday? Who is St. Nicholas? Give
yourself a pre-Christmas gift and participate in the won-
derful online series. We deliver!
If you are presently getting our Word on Fire
emails then all you need to do is sit back and wait for the
next series to arrive. If you are already on Flocknote
simply go into your account and select that you would
like to start receiving the WORD ON FIRE emails. If
you are not on Flocknote, contact Theresa Lisiecki at
734-464-4435 or at [email protected]. All that is needed
is your first and last name, email and if you would like to
receive messages on your phone, we will need your
phone number.
Calling all Children for Our
Annual Christmas Pageant Before family calendars get
filled up in these coming weeks, I
wanted to make sure that these im-
portant dates get your attention. The
Christmas Pageant is open to all children in Kindergar-
ten through 8th grade. (Older students are the readers)
We will have two practices: Wednesday December 18th
at 6:00 pm and Sunday, December 22nd at 1:00 pm
(immediately after the 12:00 noon Mass). Both rehears-
als will be in the Church and will last about one hour. If
your child wants a major role they must be there on
Wednesday, December 18th practice. If you can’t make
it December 18th please still come on the 22nd because
we can always use more angels and shepherds. This
pageant will be a part of our 4:00 pm Children’s Mass
on Christmas Eve, December 24th. For more infor-
mation please contact Theresa in the Religious Educa-
tion Office at 734-464-4435 or at [email protected].
WOMEN’S GUILD AND
WOMEN OF ST. COLETTE Our Guild is hosting a
bake sale December 14th and
15th after all Masses. We ask
the membership and women
of the Parish to help make this
a success with your baking
skills and donate homemade
goods to sell. All proceeds
will be donated to our charities. Drop off will be in the
Social Area Friday, December 13th 12:00 noon to 2:00
pm and Saturday, December
14th between 12:00 noon until
Mass at 4:00 pm. Please call
June at 734 464-0476 if you
would like to help or if you
have any questions.
Children’s Christmas Choir We are inviting all chil-
dren, fourth grade and older, to
participate in a special choir be-
ing formed to sing at St. Colette’s
Family Mass (4:00 pm) on
Christmas Eve. The rehearsal
schedule is designed to be as
convenient and accommodating
as possible. We will rehearse in
the Chapel (off of the Gathering Space of the Church) on
the Sundays of Advent from 11:15 – 11:45 am. If you
attend the 10:00 am Mass, plan on staying a little later on
those days. If you attend Mass at 12 noon, plan on arriv-
ing a little earlier. All parents and other interested adults
are invited to sit in on rehearsal.
This is a really fun opportunity with a low com-
mitment. Please, consider inviting your child or grand-
child to be a part of this. Who wouldn’t want to see and
hear their kids sing on Christmas Eve? Music reading
ability and previous choir experience are not at all neces-
sary.
The first rehearsal will be Sunday, December 1st
at 11:15 am. Any questions, find me around church or
shoot me an email at [email protected]. Hope to see
many of you there.

Give Life Thursday, December 19th As Christmas is fast
approaching and we get busy
with seasonal preparations, we
may put off things that we
wish we had time for. But
there is one thing that does not
take much time. It’s the time
to give blood. Recognizing that not everyone can donate
for valid reasons, only about 5% of the population has
ever donated while 100% may need blood some time in
their life. Still there are some who never seriously con-
sidered donating - “Someone else will do it”. Anyone age
17 and over may donate and age 16 may donate with pa-
rental consent. There is no upper age limit. If you are on
a medication that you think would make you ineligible,
call the number below and ask. We especially invite
those under age 50 who have never donated before.
Please consider it a gift to someone who might die with-
out it. There is no substitute for human blood.
We need 80 appointments in order to meet our
parish goal. As of this writing, we have only 38. Our
blood drive will be held on Thursday, December 19th
from 12:30 until 7:00 pm. Next weekend we will offer
appointment sign-ups in the gathering space. Appoint-
ments can also be made online at www.miblood.org or
by calling 1-866-MIBLOOD (1-866-642-5663).

ing Space for this event. This is a fun event for families
of all sizes and all ages. All are welcome!!!
Giving Tree Tags Gifts -
Due Next Weekend Giving Tree Tag Gifts are due
Sunday, December 8th before 1:30 pm.
These gifts will be sorted at 1:30 pm
and delivered the following morning. If
for any reason you can’t bring the gift by this time,
please call the Christian Service Office at 734-464-
4436. All gifts must be accounted for. If gifts are not
returned, someone must go out Sunday evening to make
that purchase so that we are able deliver the gifts the
following morning. Thank you!

GOSPEL MEDITATION -
ENCOURAGE DEEPER
UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
1st Sunday of Advent—December 1, 2019 “I’m never getting enough rest! How can I
possibly be ‘asleep’?” In a world of jam-packed
schedules and high anxiety levels, physical rest may
be hard to come by. Yet relentless pursuit of our to-
do lists and social calendars may keep our minds off
of the things that really matter. Jesus knows all too
well a pattern of busy, harried ignorance. “In those
days before the flood, they were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage … they did not
know until the flood came and carried them all away
… two men will be out in the field … two women will
be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one
will be left.” When it comes to the spiritual life, we
can be at work or at relaxation and still be spiritually
asleep.
Each year, we are called back to remember
the essential things. God comes to save His people.
He becomes flesh to dwell among us. Supernatural
light pierces the world’s darkness and our own. Ad-
vent wakes us up. “Stay awake! For you do not
know on which day your Lord will come.” Every Ad-
vent, we prepare to celebrate Christ’s first coming at
Christmas, and we anticipate his second coming at
the end of time.
“At an hour you do not expect, the Son of
Man will come.” There’s another hour, too, both
known and unknown. It’s the present moment.
Whether it’s a lazy Saturday morning or a major
business proposal, whether it’s attending a kinder-
garten play or an elderly relative’s bedside, at every
moment the Lord wants to enter into our hearts. This
Advent, let’s pray for the grace to stay alert. Christ
is coming soon. LPi

Parish Staff
To the Parish Family of St. Colette: It is our parish policy that all registered members of St. Colette Parish use their contribution envelopes each
week when they attend Mass, as we do need your financial support. If you are going through financial difficul-
ties, please put your empty envelope in the basket so we know you are practicing your faith as a parishioner at St. Co-
lette. If we do not receive envelopes in a calendar year, you will be contacted by the Parish Office to confirm if you are
still worshipping here.
Pray for the Sick of our Parish The names included in the Sick List should be parishioners, their relatives
and friends. If you would like to add a name, please contact the parish office. Every 4-6 months the prayer list will be updated.
