Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time • August 25, 2019

Over the past seven weeks, there were twenty-three people from our parish grouping who participated in the Activated Disciple Program. Morning sessions were held at St. Clare of Assisi and evening sessions at Holy Spirit & St. Thomas à Becket. New friends were made, faith journeys shared

and new ideas for evangelization were explored. According to two of our participants:

“The Activated Disciple Program was very inspiring, informative and was definitely a step in the right direction to evangelization and discipleship. I loved it!” - Ralph Imbrogno “The Activated Disciple has guided me to put my knowledge into practice, taking action; filling my heart with love.” - Soad Veltri

Gospel Reflection Have you ever seen a celebrity? Have you ever met a political representative? Did the encounter leave you with newfound acting or musical abilities? Did it give you a grasp of the intricacies of the latest city ordinance or controversial law? Talents, expertise and skill are hard-won traits, not rewards that spread by contact. Our life of faith is also not so easy. “We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets!” In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus notes that it requires moral strength to enter the kingdom of God. It’s not mere proximity to righteousness that saves. Rubbing elbows with the righteous is not the same as being truly holy ourselves. Unfortunately, we can have this attitude in many areas. It’s easy to see who may seem “first” in the eyes of the world. This occurs in our workplaces and among our public figures. It can also happen in our schools, local parishes and the larger Church. For some of us, the temptation to have the popularity and prestige rub off on us can be fairly strong. If only we are in the right place with the right people, surely others will associate us with what they possess! But salvation is worked out in each individual life. It is our task not merely to show up, but to be transformed. And the truly transformed may not be everyone we expect. “People will come from the east and the west and from the north and the south … some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” Some who seem first in reputation now may be last in the kingdom of God. Others who appear now on the furthest fringes of society—but better imitate the lowly holiness of Jesus—will be first in His kingdom. What are your concerns? Proximity and reputation? Or prayerful righteousness?

St. Monica — Feastday August 27 St. Augustine — Feastday August 28

This week we celebrate two saints—a mother and a son. St. Monica, also known as Monica of Hippo, is the mother of St. Augustine. She was born in 331 AD in present day Nigeria. As a young Christian woman, St. Monica was married off to a Roman pagan, who shared his mother’s violent temper. Monica had three children which her husband did not allow her to baptize. Son, Augustine was born in the year 354 AD. As a teenager, he led a wild life of self-indulgent excess. This lifestyle would continue into his adulthood. As she did for her husband, Monica prayed and fasted for the conversion of her son. After nearly twenty years, Monica’s holy example led to his conversion to Christianity. Augustine met another future saint, Bishop Ambrose of Milan, who greatly influenced his perspective on life. Augustine was then baptized a Christian! Augustine later became a bishop and one of the most influential thinkers in Christian history. Through these years, Augustine had carefully built for himself a reputation as a writer throughout Africa and beyond. Two of Augustine’s works stand out above the others for their lasting influence, The City of God and Confessions. The city of Santa Monica, California is named after Monica, as were the "weeping" springs outside the city; and St. Augustine is recognized as a Doctor of the Church.

Faith Formation

Faith Formation registration information is on our parish website: techscatholic.com under the Faith Formation tab until August 31. It is on a first-come, first-served basis. Forms are also available in the back of our churches, or at any of the Parish Offices.

Catechetical Sunday for our grouping will be celebrated at the Noon Mass on Sunday, September 22 at St. Thomas à Becket Church. All those in the teaching ministry will be recognized and commissioned for the new school year. It is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of his or her Baptism. In passing on the faith, we are a witness to the Gospel and to Jesus Christ. A witness to faith is certainly what all of us are called to do, especially in these times. Catechetical Sunday puts the focus for each of us on what it means to be a witness. It is a chance for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. If you were on trial and needed a character witness who could speak on your behalf, you would want someone who was capable of describing you—your values, your behavior, traits and virtues—someone to speak of your good character. That is what it means to be a witness and each of us are called to be a witness for Jesus Christ and His Church. On Catechetical Sunday, our faith community is called upon to pray for the catechists and teachers who stand up and are witnesses for Christ. Please contact the Faith Formation Office at 412-882-5023 and ask for Tina or Jen if you are willing to stand up and testify! You may also email: [email protected]. Join our amazing team of catechists and Faith Formation Staff and help us share the good news of Jesus Christ in a world desperately in need of the hope that Jesus Christ brings. We are looking for adults, young adults and high school teens to assist us in all aspects of our program; including being an assistant to the classroom office help, CATECHISTS, special project help and more. Give witness … call us!

Next Sunday, September 1, before our 9AM Mass, a “Patriotic Rosary” will be recited at St. Clare of Assisi Parish. Inspired by Our Lady, the Patriotic Rosary is a powerful prayer for the divine protection of our nation and its rebirth. During this rosary, we will

offer brief reflections written by our founding fathers and sing patriotic hymns. Please plan to join us 1 hour before mass begins to pray this powerful rosary for the protection of our country, for our church, for all levels of government and for each of our 50 states.

Since we are welcoming more people on Sundays from our parish grouping, we have been asked to repeat the layout for our parking lot. All cars should enter the lot by way of Shaw Avenue and then follow the arrows straight into a parking lane. Pull up to the car in front of you, leaving only a foot between cars. Lanes that are marked with diagonal lines are only used for the overflow. All cars should exit through the open fence gate. If parking on the street, please do not pull onto the sidewalk...don’t be in a big hurry when leaving …this can be quality time spent greeting old friends and meeting new ones!

It is my goal to not only continue to enrich the already flourishing academic environment, but also to be safe and secure. Of the possible five phases, I am thrilled to say that Phase One and Two of our Safety Initiative have been completed. I would like to thank all of the parents who have given of their time and talents toward this initiative, our many parents who form the various other committees, as well as each of our children’s parents for their support! I am truly blessed to be a part of this beautiful faith community. God Bless -

OLD CHURCH-NEW KITCHEN!

So many kind and generous people donated $4,200.00 to be used for the “New Kitchen in the Old Church” in memory of Mike Kearns, our Parish Maintenance person who died suddenly in June. This is a great start to our future endeavor of making the “Old Church” a happy place for many social gatherings!

“What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That what love looks like.” - St. Augustine, Feast Day August 28

See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. The Mass will help you understand how to fully, consciously and actively participate in the source and summit of the Christian life. Are you thinking about becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process established for the universal Church for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. Centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church He found-ed, this spiritual journey takes place through distinct stages over a period of time suitable to bring about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the parish community and commitment to the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful. RCIA begins the week of September 29. To find out more, contact Amy LaMartina at 412-882-8744 or email [email protected]
