College of Engineering The annual Virtual Information day was concluded on 23 October 2021. This year, some departments delivered their admission talks in hybrid mode, and organised on-campus laboratory tours which allowed more face-to-face interaction. Meanwhile, the College talk “Key to Success 城⼯成功” attracted more than 200 participants. College of Engineering The College and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) co-hosted a Forum on Advanced IoT and 5G Technologies and Applications on 3 November 2021. 12 speakers from the industry and the academia exchanged insights on the latest research and development in advanced IoT and 5G. College of Engineering The College participated in the InnoCarnival 2021 from 23 to 31 October organised by the Innovation & Technology Commission. Financial Secretary Mr CHAN Mo-po visited our booth to view the fog- powered green generator which can harvest energy and fresh water. We also delivered an online workshop on carbon energy to the general public. Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering Dr LEUNG Mei-yung and Dr Khursheed AHMED received the Best Mental Health Paper Award in the Joint WO99 & W123 CIB International Conference 2021, a leading international conference for health and safety for construction personnel. Dr AHMED also received the 1 st Runner-up award (Best Student Paper category) in the same conference. Department of Materials Science and Engineering Prof Alex JEN received a grant of ~HKD8M from the HKSAR Green Tech Fund. It was one of the eight approved projects being selected out of more than 190 proposals submitted in this first round. The Fund was set up by the Government to provide more focused support for R&D projects to help HK decarbonise and achieve carbon neutrality before 2050. Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering Dr Kostas SENETAKIS received the "2020 Editorial Board Member Award" from the Japanese Geotechnical Society in recognition of his contribution as an editorial board member of the SCI journal Soils and Foundations. Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering A book titled "Walkable Cities in High Density China. Livable, Healthy and Sustainable" by Dr Gianni TALAMINI et al was selected to receive the Urban Design Awards 2021 by the Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design. Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering Dr YU Xinge and Dr TAN Chaoliang obtained NSFC's Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Hong Kong and Macao) for their projects entitled "Intelligent Sensing and Feedback Technology Based on Flexible Electronics", and “Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials and Devices” respectively. The Excellent Young Scientist Fund is a prestigious award to support young scientists in China on the frontiers of international science. Department of Biomedical Engineering A paper titled "Shape-programmable liquid crystal elastomer structures with arbitrary three-dimensional director fields and geometries" by Dr ZHANG Jiachen and his collaborators from Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems was published in Nature Communications. Department of Biomedical Engineering A team led by PhD Student Miss CHAN Hiu Ling, under the supervision of Dr King LAI, received the Innovation Awards (University/Tertiary Institute category) at the City I&T Grand Challenge organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission and the HK Science & Technology Parks Corporation. Department of Electrical Engineering A team comprising Miss WEI Yang, Mr WANG Hao, Mr LIU Yucheng and Mr LEE Yo-che won the Work of Excellence Award (HKSAR and Macao SAR) by the Council of the Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences.
