Stewardship Sunday: Today is the wonderful day when I get to speak about our stewardship. Like most of you, I dislike talking about money, and more specifically, how much we need here at St Christopher’s. You will no doubt be aware that stewardship comprises 3 different aspects: money, time, talents. We are fortunate here that there are many people who volunteer their talents – wardens, musicians, gardeners, admin, bakers, Sunday School leaders, LPMs and fundraisers, as well as the occasional gifts of expertise and wisdom that I have been known to ask for! We are very thankful and appreciative of the talents and time that so many people bless us with. But this world requires money. And we have a running deficit this year. As a parish council we are taking steps to maximise the incomes that we have, and we are working to increase our fundraising opportunities. But this doesn’t detract from the deficit, nor from the ongoing maintenance that needs to be done. One thing I can ask is that you review your giving. I realise and appreciate most of us are on a fixed income: is there any wiggle room to increase your giving, even slightly? Another question I can ask some may see as rather distasteful: have you considered leaving a bequest to St Christopher’s in your will? I am certainly not asking everyone to do what Jesus suggested to the Rich Young Ruler: to “go, sell what you own” (Mark 10: 2). Mainly because I wouldn’t do this myself, as I like living in house with electricity and running water! But can you reconsider what you currently give? Are you aware of any funds we can apply to for grants for maintenance costs? We are applying to the Diocese for $5000, but we need to match this amount. This is for the switchboard and other electrical works, and to start our window frame replacement fund, but notification of any other fund would be appreciated. But even more importantly than money, the Council need your prayers for wisdom to know how to act and when. Please do routinely pray for us, so that we are wise stewards here at St Christopher’s.

Eucharist: 8.30am The service begins on page 119 of the Prayer Book

HYMNS:

137 For the beauty of the earth 594 Fight the good fight 430 Your words to me are life and health 531 Sent forth by God’s blessing Recessional: 768 Praise God

PSALM: 65 (Page 285) PRAYER OF THE DAY: O God, who alone can probe the depths of the heart, you hear the prayer of the humble and justify the repentant sinner: grant us the gift of humility, that, seeing our own faults clearly, we may refrain from judging our neighbour but rely solely upon your saving grace. We make our prayer through your Son, our Saviour, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

If you would like special prayers for yourself or someone else we invite you to remain at the altar rail after Communion.

FIRST READING: Joel 2.23-32 23O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the LORD your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. 24The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. 25I will repay

4

you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. 26You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. 27You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the LORD, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. 28Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. 30I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke.31The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes. 32Then everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the LORD calls. For the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God SECOND READING: 2 Timothy 4.6-8, 16-18 6As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. 7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 16At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! 17But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles

5

might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. 18The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. For the Word of the Lord: Thanks be to God THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke (Luke 18.15-30) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ 15People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it.16But Jesus called for them and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 17Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” 18A certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 20You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother.’” 21He replied, “I have kept all these since my youth.” 22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 23But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich. 24Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 26Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27He replied, “What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.” 28Then Peter said, “Look, we

6

have left our homes and followed you.” 29And he said to them, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.” For the Gospel of the Lord: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Mission Plan Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit! Give us new confidence in your grace, new words for the mission we share, new strength to go where you send us, new spring in our step, as we set out to spread our faith in changing times, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Choir For Nine Lessons And Carols Service On Sunday 8th December 2019 - The time of year has come again when we put together a Choir to lead the Nine Lessons and Carols Service, which this year, will be on Sunday 8th December. Hopefully, we can get the team back together from last year and even entice some new members to join us. The Choir will be leading the singing at the service and will do one or two solo pieces. We have lots of fun at the practices and the first one will be today 27 October at 11.45 am following the Family Service. We will then have a break the following weekend as it is the Garage Sale and then practices will be on 10, 17, 24 November and 1 December. Please email me or catch me at Church if you have any questions. Jacqui Garbett, Musician and Parish Secretary Churchsafe / Safe Ministry Training Dates and locations: https://www.perth.anglican.org/events/ Saturday 30 November Murdoch-Winthrop Saturday 14 December Kingsley North-Woodvale Wheelchair: just to remind everyone that there is a wheelchair here at St Christopher’s that people are welcome to use while on the church property. We are aware that some of us have mobility issues, and we’d rather not have any accidents. We will start to keep the wheelchair in the foyer on a Sunday morning, so that it will be easy to access. Sunday Nov 10th we have Rev Kate Lord, Chaplain in the Australian Defence Force coming as a guest speaker at both services.

Switchboard (Meter box) and Church window frames – Friday 1st November the rules change regarding getting maintenance done on Church property. We are applying for a grant from the Diocese for up to $5000 which will need to be matched by the parish. We have some urgent work that needs to be done to upgrade the switchboard and other electrics around the church and site, and we also need to replace the window frames in the church (the Hall window frames are okay), as our beautiful stained glass windows are in danger. I know I promised last year to not ask for money for a while, but this is out of my hands. If you are able to give, even a small amount, please let either myself or a church warden know. Women’s Fellowship - After consultation it has been decided

to move the date of the monthly Ladies Breakfast at Charisma. The next breakfast will be on Tuesday 29th October at Charisma at 8am. Following that it will be the fourth Tuesday of each month. Please advise Sharyn (93301269) if you will be attending as

they need to know for staffing.
