Rest In Peace Beloved Teacher, Tutor, and Friend of St. Charles Borromeo School – Sister Leonore Cousino Please remember in your prayers our dear Sister Leonore Cousino. She went to meet our Lord around 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night. Sister Leonore was 96 years young in March. Upon the completion of her 8 th grade year, at age 14, she entered the Convent, giving 82 years of service to our Lord. Sister had been living in retirement at Sacred Heart Home in Avilla. Avilla was also her hometown. Sister Leonore ministered here at St. Charles School for 38 years and many of you either taught with her or were taught by her. She began here in 1962-1963. She then was assigned elsewhere, returning to us in 1967 until her retirement in 2004. Sister Leonore had a second grade homeroom for over twenty years and she was a mainstay of sacramental preparation teaching religion to all three of the second grade classes. In 1988, she moved from her homeroom to work as one of our first official resource teachers/tutors. What a blessing she was to our school community! Her funeral Mass will be at Sacred Heart Home in Avilla tomorrow, Saturday, at 11:00 am. Visitation is Friday 4-8 and Saturday 9-11. Dear Parents (buy/sell magazines) and Students, (Warning!! A subliminal message is planted in this newsletter. Follow all instructions of the message!) Thank you for a good start to the school year! Enjoy the Labor Day weekend, as I know that all of you work (buy/sell magazines) very hard. If you have not had a chance to buy a few dozen magazines, or help your child sell a few dozen, this three-day weekend is exactly the time you need! Husbands, surprise your wives with a subscription to Sports Illustrated so that both of you may share some intimate sports reading together. Wives, what better way to (buy/sell magazines) help your husband understand your fabulous ideas for the home than to purchase a subscription to Better Homes and Gardens and leave it under his bedroom pillow. And, if you want to impress your friends with your in-the-know facts about Pope Francis, it is not too late to (buy/sell magazines) purchase 10 issues of Inside the Vatican! In closing, thank you for your good work dropping off and picking up. Very impressive! Hopefully the school routines have been established and any loose ends regarding school needs can be tied up this weekend. Stay safe. Enjoy the family. Attend Mass. And, please (buy/sell magazines) keep one another in prayer. Thank you for your children. –Rob S. STUDENTS SHOULD BE IN THEIR HOMEROOMS BY 7:50 a.m. EACH MORNING OR THEY WILL BE MARKED TARDY We continue to grow as a school and our number of drivers continues to increase each year. To ensure that your child is in their classroom by 7:50 a.m. parents should be dropping off no later than 7:45 a.m. This is a parent responsibility as our students are not yet of driving age. Please parents, do not cause stress for your children. Leave home in plenty of time to get to school. If you are currently cutting it close, I suggest beginning your entire morning routine 15 minutes earlier. The initial shock will soon become habit, and this will ensure that your children, and you, are not always in a stressful rush. We are going to be very strict with late arrivals this year. Five tardy arrivals requires a student to serve an afterschool detention. So please, be prepared, be calm, and be early! – Rob S. PLEASE, NO LEFT TURNS WHEN LEAVING THE CAMPUS AFTER DROPPING OFF OR PICKING UP YOUR CHILDREN Doing so backs up traffic and creates some dangerous situations as people are gambling to pull out into heavy traffic. The cafeteria doors are open by 7:20 a.m., so you may want to drop off earlier to avoid the crush between 7:40-7:45 a.m. I thank everyone for your cooperation in dropping students off in the morning. As a drop off reminder, I do ask that students be prepared to get out of vehicles quickly when their turn comes to disembark. Parents, if students are having problems getting out of the car (upset, seat belt won't release, backpack problems, etc.) and the issue will take a while, please just pull into a parking spot so that you have the time you need and the line can keep flowing. Overall, great job so far! Thanks! MAGAZINE SALES Thank you for your support with our magazine sales, new or renewal subscriptions, print or e-editions! There is one turn-in day left for paper order forms; it is Wednesday, September 3. Orders received after 3:15 on this day will not be able to be tallied for students to receive incentive prizes. Students receive prizes on the following morning, September 4. We prefer all orders by noon so that the volunteers may check the orders. On-line orders should be placed by that time also for students to be eligible for their incentive prizes. The forms will be processed and mailed to American Publishers Hearst on Thursday or Friday of next week. Online orders will be accepted by APHearst as long as the website is ‘live’ and our school code is accepted. We do appreciate the parents and friends who have chosen to subscribe online. It has lessened the volunteers’ time of checking every order form on turn-in day! Every family is asked to sell 4 subscriptions. Our school goal is actually 2000 orders! There will be an out-of-uniform day announced for every family who has reached this goal of four. Check next week’s newsletter for the date! SCHOOL PICTURE DAY Monday, September 15, is our annual school picture day. Students in grades K-7 will be bringing home a flyer/order form/envelope next week with information. Students in grades K-7 pre-order and prepay for their photos. Parents may do this online or with the form. Please read the information carefully when you receive it. There is one order per child. Every child in the family needs their own separate order and payment. Students in grade 8 will also have their portraits taken the same day, however, these students do not pre-order nor prepay. These students will receive proofs of several poses a few weeks later. From these proofs, students will place their orders. On school picture day, students do not need to wear their uniforms. Students should dress nicely and modestly. NO jeans nor denim shorts/capris, no sleeveless dresses or tops, no sandals nor open shoes; see the handbook for more information about appropriate attire. Gym classes and outdoor recess will still be held as scheduled, so parents/students should keep that in mind when choosing clothing. We hope to see many bright, shining faces and beautiful smiles on this day!! BAND – STRING ORCHESTRA On Tuesday, students in grades 5-6-7-8 who signed up for Intermediate (gr. 5-6) or Advanced (7-8) Band need to bring to school with them their instrument and method book used last year. Miss Bassett, the band teacher, will let parents and students know if a new method book is needed. If students returned rental instruments to the music store, arrangements need to be made by the parent for an instrument to be in the student’s hands for Tuesday. As was written in this newsletter two weeks ago, there are a limited number of school instruments available for rental. Please contact Mr. Hoersten if you would like to rent one of these. On Wednesday and Friday, students in grades 6-8 who are in Advanced Strings, will also need to bring with them to school their violin, viola, or cello as well as the method book used last year. If instruments were returned to the music store, arrangements need to be made by the parent for an instrument to be in the student’s hand for Wednesday. If the student needs to be re-sized for the appropriate instrument or if you desire to rent from the school’s limited supply, please contact Miss Bassett. On Thursday and Friday, students in grades 4-6 who are in Year 3 or Year 4 Strings will join together as Intermediate Strings and will also need to have an instrument and last year’s method book. Year 2 Strings will first meet on Monday, September 8. Parents need to make arrangements for their child to have an instrument for class on this day and also need the students to bring their method book from last year to the class. Beginning strings will meet on Tuesday, September 9, for the first time. If there are questions, please contact Miss Angela Bassett, band and strings teacher, at [email protected]

Merchant News – Over the summer, Great Lakes SCRIP announced that Marriott Hotels has decided to no longer participate in the SCRIP program. We announced it at that time but wanted to restate it in order to be sure we gets the word out. We currently have Choice Hotels, which is good at all the locations in their family of hotels, in stock, and several other hotels like Hyatt Hotels can be special ordered. Order Sheet Information – We cannot stress enough how important it is to fill in the line on the order form that indicates the name and room number of the child who is to receive your filled order. Essay Contest – What saint do you think should be depicted in our new chapel? Bishop Rhoades is very excited about the plans we have for our new chapel. We will have 10 large stained glass windows, and since our chapel is dedicated to Mary, Queen of All Saints, each window will have a depiction of a saint. What saint do you think should be depicted in our new chapel? Students, alumni, parents (past and present) and friends may write an essay on the who, what, how, and why the person believes his/her saint should be depicted in a chapel window. Email your essay to [email protected] by October 1, 2014. Bishop Rhoades will select the top 20 essays, and then the Dwenger Family will be able to vote for their favorite from that list. The Top 10 will be selected for our chapel.
