hope everyone had a peaceful and relaxing Christmas vacation, spending quality time with family and friends. As we begin this New Year, we can look back with thankfulness on the events of 2019 and think on how these events have inspired us and made a huge influence in our lives. We are hopeful that all the students will return to class rested and reenergized and use their God given talents to the best of their ability. Now would be a wonderful time for the students to re-establish the good work habits necessary to ensure educational achievement. It is also a time to buckle down and work towards achieving academic goals that were set at the start of the school year. It is up to you, the student to make it happen, and you can do it! Here are some tips to achieve your goals this school year. ● Share your goals with friends, family, and teachers for added accountability. ● Practice, nothing will get better without practice. ● Use the supports that are already in place for you.As always, we encourage continuous communication between school and home, and we look forward to your participation and involvement in your child’s education and academic success. It is the partnership between the school and home and the hard work of the students that the students will enjoy a happy, successful and rewarding school year. The start to a successful New Year begins today. The Grade 9 students need to keep in mind that high schools will be visiting them shortly and registering for next year will be based on current grades. All high schools will be basing course choices on the current mark at the time of registration, however, registration will be adjusted according to final marks at the end of the school year.I would like to take a moment to give a great big THANK YOU to all the volunteers that gave up their valuable time on December 15 and 16 to work the casino for the School Advisory Council and a special Thank You to Mrs. Chinni the casino chairperson. Without the financial assistance of the School Advisory Council and the volunteers that understand the importance of the funds generated by the casino, the students would not have access to complementary and supplementary educational items necessary to enrich their educational experience. Once again thank you to all the volunteers.

On behalf of the entire staff, our best wishes to all École St. Cecilia Family members as we begin a new year. May God bless you with peace, joy, love, hope, good health and happiness! I believe that 2020 will be a wonderful year.

Your School Advisory Council (SAC) needs YOU!! Our council meets 6-8 times per year at 5:30pm at the school. Our meetings typically last less than 45 minutes and we use that time to support our students’ success at school by getting informed about school activities, discuss future school plans, support the bi-annual CASINO, and most importantly, connect with our fellow parents and community members.

As a parent or guardian of a St. Cecilia Tiger, you are a member of our SAC! Feel free to join us at our General Meeting on JANUARY 14th, 2020 @ 5:30 pm in the conference room. Come and participate in the important conversation about our children’s junior high school.

Power teacher Pro Gradebook

Power Teacher Pro Gradebook Explained video for parents: https://youtu.be/boVV98DfVUg

In this revised gradebook, when a teacher creates an assignment, they attach at least one key learner outcome to that assignment. Along with the numerical grade of the assignment, a teacher also assesses the connected learner outcome(s) chosen in terms of levels of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient and exemplary). In the quick-look ups on PowerSchool, which can be accessed at any time, the achievement of each student is expressed numerically as well through levels of achievement on the learner outcomes chosen. This visual representation clearly leads parents, student and teachers into dialogue about next steps in learning.

At the March 17th Celebration of Learning the PowerTeacherPro gradebook along with student work will be excellent resources to engage in dialogue about each student’s learning to date and to set goals for continued progress and success. The subject level teacher will follow up through email with parents of students who show signs of struggle who did not attend an interview.

The June 26th progress reports will include an assessment of student learner skills, a percentage grade in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Religion as well as a summary level of achievement (beginning, approaching, proficient, exemplary) for each curricular learner outcome assessed during the term.

Parent username and passwords can be accessed by calling the school office.

The ongoing outcomes-based assessment and reporting structure gives parents, students and teachers clear information about student

achievement which informs next steps in teaching and learning for the continued progress and success of each student.

The Holy Spirit and Timing in a Busy World

By Fr. Glenn McDonald, CSB

Parents and students are busy people. They often ask me, “Where is God in my life?” With this article I would like to share about the timing of the Holy Spirit and God’s

love in overloaded schedules. I first noticed that timing was an aspect of God’s love when I started celebrating

baptisms. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but when I first became a priest, I wasn’t always keen on celebrating a baptism during a Sunday Mass. A baptism makes the Mass more complicated, and when I feel overwhelmed, I like to make things as simple as possible. The Holy Spirit, however, had other plans.

It took me awhile to clue in, but I eventually noticed that every time I celebrated a baptism, no matter how complicated it made the Mass, I loved it. I cannot exactly describe why -- I just did.

The mysteriousness of God’s love was raised to the next level when I would get a request to celebrate a baptism outside the regular parish Mass schedule. For example, a family would ask for a baptism on a Thursday evening in six months' time, because that is when the grandparents would be in town. Little did I know that in six months’ time that baptism would occur during the most insane week of the year, and an extra baptism would be the last thing I had time to do. And yet, no matter how exhausted I felt, the baptism lifted my spirits. Eventually, I recognized that the Holy Spirit cared for me by placing a baptism into a week when I felt exhausted or low, as a way of restoring me.

I share these experiences with you because people live very busy lives these days. Despite how hard we might try to find even five minutes for quiet and prayer, it

Page 25

can prove to be impossible (can I get an “Amen” from all the parents with young children?). The Holy Spirits understands that our lives can be crazy-busy, so the Holy Spirit inserts into our day experiences of refreshment and renewal. For me, the Holy Spirit uses baptisms. What does the Holy Spirit use in your busy schedule?
