2 | Second Sunday of Lent

A Message from our PastorDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I trust that your Lent is going spiritually well. As we continue to spend time in the wilderness with the Lord, that pendulous place where we swing back and forth be-tween belief and disbelief, I would like to make you aware of some things that are going on.

In the next few weeks, we will be starting the Archdiocesan Ignite Campaign here at St. Cecilia. This $150M campaign intends to invest in future disaster recovery fund, in faith formation, in catholic schools and in funding improvements at St. Mary’s Semi-nary, where young men are trained and formed to be good priests in service of the gospel.

The Archdiocese has set $2.7M as our parish goal. With 33 cents to every dollar, the parish share will be roughly around $900,000. This will help with the improvements in our campus and facilities which are in the process. When these plans are ready and more concrete, we will present them to you. We are targeting for these projects to begin this summer.

I am certain that everyone at St. Cecilia will participate and make this campaign a success. Details about this campaign are to follow.

Please also note that our Lenten Penance Service will be on Thursday, March 12th at 7 pm.

Finally, I would like to inform you of some changes in the Pastoral Office. First, Jorge Cardenas is now retired and Marlon Ayala has taken on the responsibilities for our Facilities. Second, Daisy O’Halloran no longer works as the Business Administrator of the parish. Your patience at this time is greatly appreciated. Please do not hesitate to call the office and you will be directed accordingly.

Let us continue to pray for one another.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Francis

Everything we have, everything we are, and everything we will become is a gift from the Lord. As faithful Catholics, we are called to re-turn our time, talent, and gifts in gratitude for God’s bounty. DSF 2020 reminds us to Bring Your Greatest Gifts to the Lord, and through our will-ingness to share our gifts, we provide support to ministries that serve thousands and thousands of our brothers and sisters in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Make your contribution today to the DSF, and help us answer God’s call to give in 2020. To give online, please visit www.archgh.org/dsf.

Please Pray for the Sick and Departed

Please note: Names of those who are sick will appear in the Sunday bulletin for two months. At the end of this two month period, names will be inscribed in our Prayer Book, located in the Chapel of Reservation, where we continue to pray for all of the sick. Obituaries of those who have died may be found at: www.legacy.com/obituaries/houstonchronicle.

Please call the Pastoral Office for Anointing of the Sick. In the event of life & death emergen-cies after office hours (if a priest is needed), please call 713-416-3222.

This way the youth are getting Confirmed with the friends and Core team members that they have been journey-ing with for two years!

Precautionary Measures: Coronavirus (COVID-19)As we enter the flu season, increased attention to hygiene due to the coronavirus, the flu and other infectious diseases is certainly appropriate.

It is important to keep the flu situation in perspective. Every year, approx-imately 36,000 people in the United States die due to flu related illnesses. Deaths related to flu and similar viruses are typically in people with other chronic illnesses. If people have the flu, they should stay home and consult their physician. Ministers who have the flu or other communicable illness should not serve the liturgical assembly. Please see the USCCB site for a question and answer page on the topic: http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/sacred-art-and-music/influenza-and-the-liturgy.cfm

Sunday Obligation Catholics are not obliged to participate in the Mass on Sunday if they are ill. It is a matter of respect and hospitality not to gather for Mass on Sunday if one is sick. Those unable to participate in Mass, if able, should still observe Sun-day, the original feast day, by spending time in prayer; giving thanks to God for life, and our redemption in Christ; recalling our many blessings, praying for strength and healing; and praying for the needs of others. Reading and reflecting on the readings of the day is beneficial. The Scripture texts as well as an audio reflection are available at http://www.usccb.org/nab/

Holy Communion, please take note of this important information regarding the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass. Out of an abundance of caution regarding the spread of the Coronavirus, and at the direction of the Car-dinal, we will be suspending the distribution of Holy Communion from the Cup until further notice. Additionally, the faithful are encouraged to receive the Body of Christ on the hand rather than on the tongue. Communicants, if choosing to receive on the tongue, should extend their tongue sufficiently making it easy to receive communion without the minister touching the tongue. We should also be reminded to be respectful of those who may be un-comfortable with physical contact during times of the Mass such as the Lord's Prayer or the Sign of Peace. Your un-derstanding and cooperation during this time is greatly appreciated. Finally, the presider will not be greeting after the end of mass for the time being. Your understanding and cooperation during this time is greatly appreciated.
