REFLECTIONS / STEWARDSHIP PAGE 3 MAY 29, 2016

Brothers and Sisters, Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). Traditionally the feast was called “Feast of the Most Holy Body of Christ.” The new Roman Missal expanded the title to express the fullest understanding of the sacrament and to include the mystery of the pre-cious blood: “Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.” Popular usage has retained the Latin title, “Corpus Christi” (Body of Christ). This solemnity is always celebrated on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. The feast originated in the Diocese of Liege, France in 1246. Its origination was based on the revelations of a French Nun, Juliana of Mt. Cornillon. She reported a vision in which she saw a shining disk with a dark spot on it. She was told that the spot was there because there was no feast to commemorate the Eucharist. Consequently the Bishop of Liege introduced the feast into his diocese in 1246. In 1264, Pope Urban IV established the feast for the entire church. However the feast did not spread very rapidly and Pope Clement V reintroduced it at the Council of Vienne in 1311-1312. During the time of the origin of this feast there was an intense devotion to the Blessed Sacrament that placed particu-lar emphasis on the real presence of Christ “whole and entire” in the consecrated bread. Because of this intense devo-tion, in 1220 in Paris, the practice of elevating the host began. Today’s readings recount 3 different sacred meals: the sacri ice offered by Melchizedek, King of Salem “who brought out bread and wine,” St. Paul’s description of the Last Supper and St. Luke’s account of the multiplication of the loaves and ishes which is the only miracle story found in all 4 gospels. This meal of Jesus’ is a great hospitality event welcoming thousands for the breaking of the bread. The words and actions of Jesus are the same we hear and see in our Eucharistic liturgy: taking … blessing… breaking…giving. These same words and actions were repeated at the Last Supper when Jesus would again takebread, blessit, breakitandsharehimself with the disciples. In the gospel story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus it was in those same ac-tions that the disciples recognized the Risen Christ. Church teaching insists that Eucharist commits us to the poor. When Jesus hosted a meal, all were invited, all were fed, and all were healed. The operative word is all. The righteous and unrighteous alike were offered seats at the ta-ble. One cannot eat the “Bread of Life” and deny basic sustenance to any of God’s people. Lastly my brothers and sisters, on this Memorial Day weekend, as a former Roman Centurion I ask you to spend a mo-ment or two remembering those living and those who have died who have given their best for the country they loved. May God Bless Each of You, Faithful

News from Our Parish School Excellence in Education, Body, Mind & Spirit A Very Good Evening It Was Star Wars Family Fun Night was held Friday evening a week ago, and a good time was had by all. Tri-tip

sandwiches and lightsaber duels gave way to our band concert and costume contest (Boba Fett being my favorite), and our families were able to savor one last fun evening (under the stars enjoying a movie) together before the end of the school year and the beginning of sum-mer. That is one of the key strengths of our school, building community. To all of our parishioners who popped in to see us, thank you for coming. That same evening at 4:00 pm was our final Open House. We had teachers and parents answer questions, then Star Tours were given to show off our school and our program. Many of next year’s new parents who have already registered attended, as did those parents who are still in the “maybe” stage. It was good to see that more of our parish families expressed interest in joining our school community next year. We only have two more weeks left in the school year. The Eighth Grade is preparing to graduate and move on to Notre Dame, Aquinas, and the local high schools. Our Transitional Kindergarten is preparing to move into the full Kindergarten program, Fifth grade is anxious to move into middle school, and all the rest are excited about summer approaching. With all that, it was great to share this one evening and have fun together. After all, building academically strong children in our strong Catholic community is what our school is all about – and having fun while doing it is a great gift from God. If you would like more information on sending your children to our school, please call us. May the Force be with you,

—Anonimo
