St . John was born in Italy in 1386. He was a lawyer and governor of the city of Perugia.

When enemies of the city threw John into prison, he started to think about the real

meaning of life. John’s political enemies were not in a hurry to release him. He had plenty of

time to realize that what mattered most was the salvation of his soul. So when he was

miraculously set free, John entered a Franciscan monastery. He was thirty at the time. For John,

life as a poor friar was a big change. He had to sacrifice his independence for the love of Jesus.

And he tried with all his heart to do this.

After he became a priest, John was sent out to preach. He and his former novice master, St.

Bernardine of Siena, spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus everywhere. John preached

throughout Europe for forty years. All who heard him were moved to love and serve the Lord

better.

An outstanding moment in the life of this saint came at the battle of Belgrade. The Turks had

made up their minds to conquer Europe and to wipe out the Church of Jesus. The pope sent St.

John Capistrano to all the Christian kings of Europe to beg them to unite to fight the mighty

Turkish army. The kings obeyed this poor, barefoot friar. He stirred up their love of God and

their courage with his fiery words. But even though a big army of Christians came to fight

Mohammed II and his Turks, it looked as though they would lose. The enemy army was much

bigger. Then it was that the saint himself, though he was seventy years old, ran to the front lines

and encouraged the men to keep fighting. Holding his crucifix up high, this thin, small old man

kept crying, “Victory, Jesus, victory!” And the Christian soldiers felt full of more courage than

ever. They fought until the enemy ran away in fear.

St. John Capistrano died a short time later, on October 23, 1456. He was proclaimed a saint

in 1724.

Capistrano to share with us some of his enthusiasm and courage to do what is right

Birthday Celebration of Blessed Mother Mary

O n Sunday, September 6, our parish had a wonderful celebration of the birthday of our Blessed Mother Mary. The

event was coordinated by Cora Verdadero and members of the Legion of Mary. It was attended by more than 150

people.

Fr. Paul Da Silva opened the celebration with a

very inspirational talk about the life of Saint Anne and

the birth of Mary. He explained that St. Joachim and

St. Anne had been praying to have a child for

twenty years. They experienced pain, distress, and

humiliation for being unable to conceive a child. In

the eyes of their peo- ple they had committed a grave

sin which called for the Lord’s reprobation. Their

love for the Lord was unwavering and they prayed

continuously to be relieved of this painful disgrace.

The Lord sent an an- gel from Heaven to reassure

Joachim. He an- nounced to him “your infertility

will soon come to an end.”

Carl Cooper led the group with a selection of Marian hymns.

The “Living Rosary” followed, which was comprised of 59 children and adults, each person holding a large rosary bead.

The Rosary was led by Kathy Skiba, president of the Legion of Mary. The program and prayers were projected on the big

screen with slides prepared by Terry Culpepper. Fr. Virgil Tolentino provided the projector, music, and sound system,

and Luis Lopez provided technical assistance.

The guests offered flowers to the Blessed Mother, Infant Jesus and St. Anne. The children blew out the candles on the

birthday cake after singing Happy Birthday. The cake was donated by the Rosary Altar Society.

Unlike previous Blessed Mother birthday celebrations, the entertainment included “The Magic Show of Simon Shargo” a

famous magician. It was fun and amazing, especially to the children. Simon invited some children to participate in the

performance. The afternoon ended with line dancing led by Fr. Virgil.

Everyone enjoyed the hotdogs and ice cream compliments of Ron and Kathy Skiba. Their daughters Melissa and

Jennifer assisted in serving the guests. Rochielle Guanlao and family put together a very attractive “Candy Corner” that

the children were unable to resist.

The Legion of Mary would like to thank those who participated in underwriting the event. The funds were used for the

materials to make the large rosary beads and to pay for the magician. They also would like to thank all those who assisted in

the preparation and running of the event.

Everyone commented after the celebration that “it was fun for the whole family!!”

October 11, 2015 seven students from Shore Middle

School were so moved by Bens presentation, they

showed up at the National Down Syndrome Buddy

Walk in South Plainfield, NJ to give Ben and his

brother Jacob and other families their support and did

the walk with them.

After the walk Ben slipped into a Mickey Mouse

costume along with Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck,

Daisy, Olaf, Winnie the Pooh, Buzz Light Year, and

Woody, and took pictures with all the little children.

Kudos Ben, we love you!
