s we reach the beginning of a new school year, I think we can look back proudly at theachievements of the last twelve months. Foremost among these has to be the installation ofinteractive projectors, laptops and wireless internet in all of the classrooms. This is sure to greatlyenhance the learning environment within the school for the benefit of all of our students and

teachers. Our sports facilities have also been greatly enhanced with thegym and fitness centre getting great use as well as the indoor football andbasketball. I would like to make special mention of our former 6th yearstudents who are reading their first year book as past pupils of St. Brendan’sCollege. At this stage, these students will have already received theirLeaving Certificate results and I hope they have all done very well and arenow looking forward to the next phase in their lives whether it is startingthe third level course of their choice, starting out in work, taking up anapprenticeship or taking time out to travel. Whatever path they take, I wishthem on behalf of the whole school community here at St. Brendan’sCollege, the very best of luck and success now and in the future. To ourpresent pupils, I wish them all a very successful year and hope that2011/2012 brings them success both in their studies and in all their otherpursuits.

I would like to congratulate all of the students who represented St.Brendan’s during the 2010/2011 school year. It is a great honour torepresent your school and I believe that all of these students have done soadmirably, giving their best at all times. Thanks also to the many membersof staff who gave up their own time to train and look after these activities.Special congratulations to:

The under 19 Gaelic football team – South Leinster Champions 2011The senior Rugby team who reached the semi-finals of the Development CupThe under 15 Soccer team – runners-up in the Wicklow/Wexford CupSean Tobin, 3rd year – All Ireland Schools’ Indoor Archery Champion 2011Hugh Douglas, 5th year, who represented Ireland at under 18 level in soccerDylan Hayes, 3rd year, who represented Ireland at under 15 level in soccerJosh O’Rourke, 5th year, who represented Ireland at under 18 level in rugby.

All of these students have brought great honour on themselves and the school through their commitment andhard work.

Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will have added to our sports facilities with the construction of thenew changing rooms with shower and toilet facilities. I hope also that the Learning Support Centre will benearing completion and that those of our students with special educational needs will benefit greatly fromthis facility. Regarding the new school building, we continue to edge closer to the finishing line with the newsthat full planning permission has been granted by DLRCC. Our architects are now in the process of preparingthe tender documents. We will keep parents fully informed of news as we get it.

I would like to thank the parents who work so hard on the Parents Association for all the help they haveprovided at school functions and other events. It is much appreciated. I would also like to pay tribute to ouradministrative and ancillary staff – Nieves, Joy, Muriel, Bridie and Roy – for all their work behind the scenesmaking sure that the school can function properly.

In conclusion, may I especially welcome our new first year students and wish them an enjoyable andrewarding time in St. Brendan’s College. I invite them to join with the existing students and the entire schoolcommunity as we journey through the next academic year, guided at all times by the principles of our founder,Edmund Rice.

Iwould like to thank all the staff, students and parents who have allcontributed to another successful year in Saint Brendan’s. The mostsignificant event this year on the staff was the retirement ofMr. Kieran Ahern after a long and rewarding career at Woodbrook.I would like to wish him a happy, healthy and fruitful retirement. I

know his chat in the staffroom has been missed by all. I would like to thank Mr. Kevin Mulligan for his two years he spent

with us and the time he gave to coaching the senior gaelic football teamwho were the only team to bring home silverware this year. Welcomeback to Ms. O’Brien and Ms. O’Gorman who both returned from maternityleave and thanks to their replacements, Mr. Ryan, Ms. Clarke and Mr.Kelly. Also welcome back to Mr. McDonald after his career break.

I would like to welcome Ms. Angela Dwane and thank her fororganising the TY play. I won’t list out all the teachers who give of theirtime so generously but without their dedication to these extracurricularactivities the school would be a far less vibrant place. Well done andthanks to all as I know the boys and their parents really appreciate yourefforts.

It only remains for me to wish the class of 2011 the very best for thefuture and hopefully they have achieved the necessary grades to aid their future career path. Do keep intouch lads and let us know how you are doing!!! PAUL MURPHY

he Senior Basketball teamenjoyed a great season thisyear. The team went throughthe League campaignunbeaten with an 0-7winning streak. The team wasled by Arnouldas Alchimodasand managed some close

margin wins, with the game against St. Aidan’sin Tallaght, being the most memorable.

The team progressed to the Dublin regionsemi-finals against Lucan Community Collegein Oblate Hall, Inchicore. The game wasexcellent with a constant to and fro for the leadthroughout the game. We eventually lost74-68 but recognised that we had built onprevious years and were now developing intoa very good basketball playing school.

The Junior Basketball team did not playcompetively this year but still played a number of friendly games with the game against Salesian College, Celbridge beingthe stand-out game in an unbeaten campaign.

SENIOR SQUAD: Arnouldas Alchimodas, Gytis Preistavicus, Levin Heimann, Paul Dagbay, Francis Aristosa, Lucas Nowicki, Arthuras Karoublas and Darragh Smith.

Mr. Fitzpatrick would like to thank all players for the hard work and enthusiasm which all members of each squaddisplayed this season. Long may our development continue!!!

he 2010-2011 school yearwas a highly successful onefor the footballers of St.Brendan’s. In what was anauspicious start to thefootballing year and anindication of the level of

performance to come, St. Brendan’sdefeated local rivals PresentationCollege, Bray, in a thrilling openinground to the Wicklow AChampionship. This was the first winin many years against our neighboursand the omens were looking good.

It was to be another 5 monthshowever before the next round wasplayed. This was due to a tremendousrun in the South LeinsterChampionship that St. Brendan’sinitiated with a comprehensive winover a battling Baltinglass in the firstround. The team was really beginningto take shape with an extremelydependable spine of young menmanning the central positions:

Shane Farrell was incredible allyear; his Premier-League standardsaves kept Brendan’s in thecompetition on numerous occasions.Eoin Tuohy was forever aninspirational presence at full-back and

whether it was last-ditch diving blocksor warrior-like surges out of defence,he was continuously lifting thosearound him. Gavin Burke, at centreback, was a rock upon which many anopposition attack perished and hissetting up of play was integral to thesuccess enjoyed this year. NiallMeldon cut a captain’s figure atcentre-field and his fielding andability to kick off either foot wasunrivalled throughout the campaign.Dean O’Neill assumed the playmaker’srole at centre-forward and his give-and-go routine, followed by himarching the ball over the bar afterreceiving the return pass, left many adefender scratching his head.

Up front, the dynamic duo ofSimon Grant and Sean Plunkett dove-tailed to great effect with Simon usinghis strength to win mountains ofpossession before Sean would applythe coup-de-grace by arrowing theball over the bar in his ownswaggering, effortless style.

Next up was a much vauntedAvondale side and after a game thatcould have gone either way, thegreater resolve of the Brendan’s boyssaw them over the line.

A semi-final tie against FerrybankCC loomed and after much delay dueto the Winter freeze, St. Brendan’swere very much down to business indisposing of the oppositioncomfortably.

And so to the big day withBrendan’s vying with Bunclody VEC forthe right to be declared South Leinsterchampions. Buoyed by a contingent ofvery vocal supporters, the Brendan’slads didn’t disappoint. Augmentingthe aforementioned players, CianByrne and Nathan Cardin weretenacious and tigerish in the cornerback positions. Chris Byrne was abundle of energy working up anddown the wing. David Sullivan wassimilarly driven throughout the yearand once more in the final, where hisball-carrying and fooballing brainwere vital to the cause. MartinSustavicius was the perfect foil toMeldon at midfield, expertly linkingdefence and attack. Fergus O’Brienalso proved himself a useful additionto the team at this point in the year, his power bringing vital strength tothe middle third. campaign and CianMcGoldrick worked tirelesslyand got some vital goals, without which Brendan’swould never have reachedthis stage. Rob Martinhoplayed the roving cornerforward role to perfectionand his intelligent use ofpossession was a feature ofhis play.

On the day, St. Brendan’splayed all the best footballand were deservingwinners. Captain NiallMeldon had the honour oflifting the Cup.

There was little time forcelebration as within afortnight we were back inaction, this time in theLeinster semi-final wherewe faced the North Leinsterchampions, O’Fiadh Collegefrom Dundalk. Played onthe resplendent St. Brigid’sstate-of-the-art 3G pitch, St.Brendan’s unfortunatelycame up short on the day.

In late March attentionreturned to more localmatters and the muchdelayed Wicklow “A”quarter-final. The opponentswere Wicklow De La Salle.Shorn of a couple of ourregulars, St. Brendan’sbattled valiantly against theodds but were narrowlydefeated. And so the yearwas ended.

Other players whocontributed heavily to thesuccess of the year wereConor McMahon, DavidByrne, Owen Brett, ChrisCarroll, Josh O’Rourke, BarryKinsella, Cillian O’Carroll,Rob Murray and MichaelMcHugh. Thanks to all theplayers who togged out andhopefully the majority ofthe players will continue toplay the sport long afterthey’ve left the school. Theplayers deserved theirsuccess for their skill anddetermination and no doubta first South LeinsterChampionship in manyyears was a fine way tocrown the sporting calendar.

Istarted kickboxing when I was four and I knew it was going to be a life changingexperience. For the past four years I have been representing Ireland in countries such asPortugal, Italy and Croatia.

This year I went to Portugal with my dad andI reached the semi-finals.

Unfortunately I broke my thumb half-way through the first round and thematch was stopped.

However I was very happy with mywinnings: a world bronze medal. I am nowback in training to go to Los Angeles nextyear. I am currently training four nights aweek which is seven hours altogether.

Sometimes I help out with the youngerclasses to show them the basics.

I am training in a small club owned byGrand Master Massan Ghorbari.

Travelling to compete can be veryexpensive so I have been sponsored by alocal restaurant for the last four years.

So far I have won 16 All-Ireland titles, four of whichI won in the last year and 2nd and 3rd Europeanand World medals.

I was told when I trained for the first time that dedication and hard work pays off and forme it has.

It was a busy year in theSchools’ rugby calendar. Theschool was defeated in thesecond round of the Senior

Development Cup by a strong GoreyCommunity School who went on tocontest the Development Cup Finalloosing 7-3. In the Senior DevelopmentShield Competition St Brendan’sopened with a convincing 23-12 winover Convey College. Josh O’Rourke,Luke Sheridan and Cody Newell werebest of the St Brendan’s team withstrong performances also from ShaneFarrell, David Sullivan, Fergal Browneand Junior Madide.

The second round gave St Brendan’sa home draw again and they werevastly superior to St Aidan’s Brookdaleeventually running out 40-0 winners.Rhys Gorman, Gavan Burke, NathanJohnston, and Daniel Michael wereparticularly dominant. This put StBrendan’s in a first rugby quarter-finalat senior level in over fifteen years.

As numbers in training wereimproving and the return of KevinKinsella to training there was a gooddeal of optimism amongst the players

heading into the quarter-final. Thistime Hartstown Community Schoolprovided the opposition but a strong StBrendan’s pack allied to good handlingfrom the backs saw St Brendan’s easeto a 15-0 half-time lead. As the lineoutwas functioning well, thanks inparticular to good work from IanCollins and Shane Farrell, Hartstownfound it difficult to make progress andeventually St Brendan’s ran outconvincing winners on a 38-0scoreline.

St Brendan’s faced Wexford CBS inWexford in the semi-final. This was ahard-fought game with both sidestaking serious hits. In the first half StBrendan’s had the advantage of astrong wind but failed to takeadvantage of this despite going closeon a number of occasions. Injuries inthe game to key players like RhysGorman and Nathan Johnston had atelling effect and St Brendan’s sawtheir Shield run come to adisappointing end.

However hopes are high for 2012 asthe majority of this squad are

underage for next yearscompetition. We’d like to wishour 6th Years who played onthis years team – GytisPresigalavacius, ArnoldosArchimovas, Junior Madide,Kevin Kinsella and SeanKennedy the best of luck andalso congratulations to Joshand Luke for playing with theIrish Under-18s.

RUGBYSenior Development Cup

This year I had the honour to be chosen torepresent the Ireland Under 18’s rugbyteam. We played three matches, of whichwe won two and drew one.

The first match was against Germany inBerlin. We beat them 54-0 as they are onlya developing rugby country, but it wasgreat to get my first taste of internationalrugby.

The next match was against England athome in Ashbourne. In the first half wewere totally in control of the game but theEnglish fought back in the second half todraw with us 23-23. After the match wewere presented with our first internationalcaps.

The final match was against France inQuimper. A large crowd of 4,000 spectatorswelcomed us onto the pitch which wasexciting, as many of us had never playedin front of a crowd that big before. We wonthe match 29-14 which was a first for anIrish Youths U-18’s side away in France andended the season unbeaten.

Idid my work experience in Aviva as an actuary.Aviva was amazing. The people were all verynice to me and the inside was so modern and

up-to-date with all the gadgets. I liked the wayAviva employed people not just from Ireland.Aviva is a multicultural company, there wereSpanish, English, French, Italian and Portugueseemployees.

When I entered the building, security gave mean ID card and this allowed me in and out of Avivawithout any hassle. My ID card contained myname and my host name: Alan Bergan.

The lift took me to floor five. I introduced myself to Alan, he seemed nice.Alan gave me a lot of work. I was required to input rates on the computer. Itwas very tiring but rewarding in the end. Floor five was the re-insurancedepartment. In the second week I went up to floor six - the investmentdepartment. I preferred this department because it was quieter and smaller. Iwas given the task of setting out, on the calendar, the meetings for each day.I flew through the job. Overall I enjoyed the work experience in Aviva, and Iwould advise any students to go to Aviva on work experience.

Brandon Downey

For my work experience I had chosen twowork placements: Everest Cycles andShoreline Leisure in Bray.

In my week in Everest Cycles I had real fun asI was working with all types of bicycles frommountain bikes down to Box’s.

In my time there I had been shown how to doa full service of a bike as well as how to assemblea bike from right out of the box. I wouldrecommend this placement if you have a spark forbikes.

In my second week in Shoreline Leisure I foundout what was the requirements to become a fitness trainer and aphysiotherapist. Most days I started work as early as 6.30am.

While I was working in the Leisure Centre I took part in different fitnessclasses: Spinning, Body Core, and Circuits.

From my observation of the classes with determination anybody can get fit.I would recommend this placement for people with an ambition to be fit.

The “Build a Bank” project is run inconjunction with AIB and involves a groupof students setting up a “mini-bank” inthe school. Students can then openaccounts, lodge and withdraw moneythrough their account in the school.

The bank operates at break time ontwo days a week and is monitored bystaff from the AIB in Bray.

The objective of the project is toencourage students to open bankaccounts and to help them understandhow banks and bank accounts operate.

Shankill WoodsThis trip was at the request of the class whowere shocked to learn in their EnvironmentalStudies class that there is a possibility thatall of the woodland in public ownership maybe sold. This would include the 3 lovelywoods, Rathmichael, Ballycorus andBarnaslingan, that the class walked throughon their hike from the Scalp to Shankillbefore Christmas.

Natural History MuseumAt the trip to the Dead Zoo (Natural HistoryMuseum) all the group were stunned by thepolar bear, shot dead in the Canadian Arcticin 1851 by a native of Dundalk!

The Great SugarloafWe were blessed with a glorious day for ourclimb of the Great Sugarloaf. The climb wastackled by the longest route from Kilmac.Everyone made it to the top is a super timeof just under 3 hours showing the value ofall the earlier walks. Even the final scrambleposed no problems!

Glasnevin CemeteryThe poor weather testedthe stamina of our TY ladsfor the tour of GlasnevinCemetery. But they wereso enthralled that theirguide extended the tourby almost a full hourdespite the rain. Theirguide was full of praise for the enthusiasmand attentiveness of the group.

Howth Cliff WalkThe photo showsthe group at thestart of the longcliff walk aroundHowth head. Thehappy smilingfaces were muchless so 3 hours later after circling the cliffs ofHowth and then crossing the high hills of thepeninsula to return to Howth village. Someof the boys were even unable to partake ofany refreshments, such was theirexhaustion!

Dun Laoghaire PierTreasure HuntThe Dun Laoghaire pier treasure hunt endedin a welter of excitement, drama andcontroversy. The afternoon was fiercelycompetitive but the finish was even more so.Team Reds came back to have their answerschecked in an unbelievable time of 37minutes. Their answers were excellent with

HERITAGE TRIPSBelow are some of the Heritage Trips the Transition Year students participatedin throughout the school year.

only one incorrect answer. Other teamsreturned in fast times with the same scores. However soon controversy raged. Severalteams lodged formal objections to TeamSubway who, it was alleged, had told severalother teams that the number on the CrimeanWar cannon was 80! Team FDL, TeamExcelsior and Team Gringos2007 also madethis allegation. A torrent of claim andcounter-claim was washing over the pier!Tempers were frayed!

However peace was restored when, withthe wisdom of Solomon, the senior judge,Mr Murphy, adjudged that while TeamSubway were disqualified for providingincorrect answers to other teams, all otherteams were also eliminated from the contestfor the offence of seeking outside assistance. However such was the keeness of thecompletion that Mr Murphy decided thatthe entire group should spend the prize fundon warming hot chocolates in DunLaoghaire!

Croke ParkThe long trip toCroke Park wasexhausting! Thewalk fromO'Connell Street, climbing all thosesteps and finally along session with the interactive games! Thehurling speed game was won with a topspeed of 128kpm. The boys were hardly ableto make their way home.

Shankill BeachAfter an exhaustingmorning at a Céilíin the school weopted for a localtrip to the beachesin Shankill andKilliney to see the

aftermath of the last Ice Age. The photoshows our budding geologists standingbeside the debris of the Great Irish SeaGlacier that covered the area and gave thesmooth shapes to Killiney Hill, Bray Headand Carrickgollagan (the harder quartz of theSugarloaf was more resistant!). In fact it canbe said that the group are standing under2000 meters of solid ice! (even if the icemelted 16000 years ago!). We evencollected some of the famous Ailsa Craiggranite pebbles; carried to Shankill fromScotland by the same ice! A lot of debrisfrom Scotland has found landfall in Shankill!

Young Scientist ExhibitionA visit to the Young Scientist Exhibition is

always on for the first Friday back to schoolafter Christmas. While the lads marvelled atthe exhibits, the crowds this year werebigger than ever (we say this every year!)and this made any group photos impossibleespecially with the crowds (of mostlyfemale) new friends gathered around ourgroup!

Dublin Mountain WayThe last outing before Christmas was a3-hour hike on the new Dublin MountainsWay from the Scalp toShankill village. Throughold and new woodland, over the bald height ofCarrickgollagan (with adiversion to the old leadmines chimney, see thephoto!) and down toShankill on the beautifulnew path in Rathmichael Wood; it was agrand afternoon; despite the biting wind andthe fearful views off to the higher and snow-covered Wicklow hills.

Collin's BarracksThe class had another trip to the Museum atCollins Barracks in November to have a lookat another of the exhibitions. The group'ssecond visit of the year proved a slightdisappointment when the questions in themuseum's worksheet that we were using asa treasure hunt proved a little toochallenging!

Bray HeadThe group had a very enjoyable walk or runto the top of Bray Head. It was a first ascentfor some of the class, even for someresidents of Bray!

Kilmainham GaolOn this trip the class were shocked to learnof the conditions that prisoners were kept indown through the years and were moved bytheir guide's account of the executions of theleaders of the 1916 Rising.

Trinity College DublinThe science treasure hunt in Trinity was agreat success and great fun, won by TeamFDL (N Johnson, D Brierton and D Michael)who relied on old fashioned detective workand brain power. The strategies adopted byother teams were not as productive; oneteam were shocked by how little Trinitystudents knew about their own college andanother learned an expensive lesson aboutthe limited power and speed of Google!

Saint Brendan’s pupils havebeen sponsoring threeboys, to enable them to goto school in Nepal, for thepast two years.

With one non-uniform day a year theSt. Brendan’s boys enable three youngNepalese boys to get an educationinstead of working, like their fathers, asunskilled workers in the fields.

The school, River Dale School, issituated in Pokhara in the foothills of theHimalayas in Nepal.

The money raised by the non-uniformday is sent directly to the school tosupport these three pupils. I have directcontact with the principal who is trustworthy and responsible.

This is an excellent way for the boys of St. Brendan’s Collegeto participate in a charity helping young boys to get aneducation.

Well done to all of them for supporting this cause.

Chris Carroll and myself wentto Haiti last April to buildhouses and work with thelocal community. Wedeparted Ireland for Haiti on

Saturday 2nd April, arriving there earlyon Sunday morning, after travelling forapproximately 24 hours, taking in aone-hour stopover in Newfoundland, and a two-hour roadside pit stop dueto a failing engine fan belt. Weeventually arrived in Gonaives, in theNorth West of the country at 2.00amlocal time.

Above left and right: The work which is carried out from 6am to 6pm!

Below left: Gonaives, the city where ourbeneficiaries come from. It has been devastatedby hurricanes and mudslides in 2004 and 2008.

After a light breakfast and a short briefing from Havenstaff, we hit the building site.

Conditions on site were basic. We were living in tentedaccommodation, with limited access to electricity, sleepingon canvas camp beds and sharing with up to five otherpeople.

We were up everyday at 5am for breakfast and workedin temperatures often exceeding 40ºC.

Chris and I were involved in the masonry team workingon the new community centre in the mornings until half twowhen we joined the social team in last years camps to workwith the children. We ran a summer camp which involvedvolunteers and the local community interacting throughsport, music and arts and crafts.

Haiti is not a place where it’s easy to become comfortablewith the sights you see or the poverty you encounter. Aftertwo full days on site, the progress was visible, houses werebeing completed and painted and the Community Centre and Chris and I and our team with the children of Morne Blanc.

playground was making very good progress. We wereenduring blisters, heat, dust and long days - but it was allworth it. By the end of the fourth full day on site all thegroups had settled into a steady routine and things werecoming together with increasing ease. The uncertainty of thefirst day had been replaced by a confidence and familiaritythat had moved the various projects on at pace.

On our second day, Chris and I went on a beneficiary tourto Gonaives. Here we met some of the families who wouldbe given houses on the new site. The shanty town we visitedwas a heart-wrenching place to be, although even with thisfeeling it was amazing to see all of these people who have

A Graffiti workshop was organised, in the school, by Ms McCann. It had noaffiliations with the current illegal graffiti art scene!

One of the aims is to encourage students to explore ideas and gainconfidence by acquiring new skills, while respecting the environment.

The workshop only lasted for a day but was enjoyedby all who participated.

suffered tremendously still smiling, singing and dancing. This musical feeling was brought on by a volunteer namedBobby Lee who used his guitar to bring hope to thesepeople. This was a place that would bring any man orwoman to tears. Imagine a town built on a rubbish tip withvery dubious water flowing through the middle of it.Imagine trudging through mud whilst lots of children walkalongside you laughing and smiling, oblivious to theirsurroundings. Imagine then seeing a ‘room’ no bigger thansomething that would hold a king size bed and two chairs.Imagine five people living, eating, sleeping, washing andexisting in that room. Imagine a roof on that room that isnot waterproof and walls that are not wind or rain proof.Imagine a foul smell. You are imagining the place fromwhich our work will rescue some families. We came back insilence. Bobby Lee whose music made the trip so much better

George Hook, TV presenter, who was there with our team in a school in Gonaives.

The prospect of a cold drink, a shower and the eveningmeal was a great way to unwind before the eveningentertainment began. The food was of a very high qualityand credit really has to go to the catering team who did suchmarvellous work.

In the evenings there was ‘Open Mic’ nights whichshowcased the talent that was swirling around in our groupof 370.

Throughout the week, Chris and I became very attachedto the group of over 100 children we were working with andit was a very hard thing to leave. We did end on a good note,a group of landscapers built an 11-a-side football pitch andwe played a match against the local boys. This was anamazing experience. In all Chris and I really enjoyed the trip,it was a life-changing experience and I would recommendthis kind of work to anyone. I for one will not be taking whatI have for granted anymore.

Charity Cake Sale

Before Christmas first year students organised a cake sale for charity, helped by their SPHEteacher Ms. McCann. The numerous and scrumptious cakes helped them to raise money for St.Vincent de Paul. Well done lads!!!

Ms Lynn spoiled theSecond years byorganising a Frenchbreakfast (petit-dejeuner)where she served hotchocolate withmarshmallows, croissantsand baguettes withbutter and jam. This is not an easy job; it requires alot of organising and dedication!! There is no better woman thanMs Lynn for the task; she is a real ‘cordon bleu’ who has treatedthe staff, many times, to her scrumptious desserts. Merci Ms Lynn!!

On April 5th the Honours English group from third year went to see ‘The Merchant ofVenice’, which we were studying, in the Mermaid Arts Theatre in Bray.

It was a modern day setting using the original, unchanged, Shakespearian text .Youcould describe it as ‘Shakespeare meets the modern day’.

Well I think ‘Shakespeare meets the 80s’ would be more fitting! Judging by theclothing and the amount of leather jackets!

You are probably thinking ‘would the old English text and modern clothing not lookout of place?’ And it was, at the very beginning anyway; but after the first scene it beganto work well.

This was only a minor feature of the play but the main points and themes of the playwere not lost. The main reason we went to see the live stage version, after havingalready watched the film version, was to help us with the stagecraft question which can

come up on the Junior Cert.Apart from one or two minor mistakes from the members of cast, scenery and wooden props didn’t change so

the same wooden blocks and the bridge where the characters stood didn’t change. That meant the same bridgewas in Venice, the Rialto, The Courthouse, Belmont and Portia’s Palace.

There also was impromptu humour which arose from the Shakespearian text and comments and ‘teenagehumour’ which came from members of the audience (especially during the change in scenes when the lights wentout!). It was a very enjoyable experience and really helped with our study of the play.

Sixth Year Ecology TripOn a crisp November morning our biology class, along with Ms O’Neilland Mr Scully, headed to Knocksink Wood in Enniskerry, for ourmandatory ecology field trip.

When we first arrived we went directly to the visitors centre wherewe would await our guides.

We were given a clipboard and a question sheet to be filled in duringthe course of the trip.

When our guides arrived we split into two groups. Each group thenproceeded to walk for a short time in the woods.

When we chose a spot to study the habitat we marked it off in asquare with four pieces of ten metre rope. We identified any leaves and insects in the area. Wealso looked for any evidence of any animals. We recorded any findings and filled out ourworksheet.

At half twelve we finished and cleaned up the equipment and returned it to the visitor centre.Everyone enjoyed it and felt it was extremely worthwhile and a big help for their Leaving Cert

ecology exam.
