New Testament

LAZARUS AND

THE RICH MAN

Luke 16: 19-31

There are two people named Lazarus

in the New Testament. One of them is

the brother of Mary and Martha. Laza-

rus was raised from the dead after he

had been dead four days. The other

Lazarus is the poor man in this para-

ble of Jesus.

Lazarus was the most miserable hu-

man being we could imagine. He lived

right on a rich man’s doorstep but the

rich man never noticed him. The real

story opens when Lazarus dies and

goes to heaven where he is treated

kindly by Abraham. The rich man

changes his mind about Lazarus. He

now thinks of him as a servant. Could

Lazarus dip his finger in water and

cool his thirst? Abraham says no. Then

the rich man thinks of Lazarus as a

messenger. Could he go to his five

brothers and warn them about the

misery of Hell? Again Abraham says

no. The rich man should have listened

to Moses and the prophets and he

should have been kind to the poor.

Old Testament

PROVERBS

Proverbs are short sayings that are

easy to memorize and send a strong

message. Here are a few favorite

messages from the book of Proverbs

in the Bible.

Get wisdom! Get understanding.

A wise child makes his father

glad but a foolish child is a grief

to his mother.

Go to the ant, [lazy person]. Con-

sider her ways and be wise.

The eyes of the Lord are in every

place, keeping watch on the evil

and the good.

Trust your work to the Lord and

your plans will succeed.

Don’t work to gain riches. Riches

grow wings and like an eagle fly

away.

MY FAITH

Stewardship and

Service

We all have a

chance to be

STEWARDS and

SERVANTS of God.

A servant works un-

der the direction of

a steward. Both are

very important in

the kingdom of God.

The Bible has many

stories of servants

who became stew-

ards by being re-

sponsible and work-

ing hard. Joseph the

son of Jacob was a

slave in Egypt. He

became a steward.

Bishops are stew-

ards who guide and

direct our work in

the kingdom.

JEREMIAH The

prophet Jeremiah was

very young when the

word of the Lord

came to him and he

was sent to Jerusa-

lem. Jeremiah urged

the people to make

peace with the Assyri-

ans. His life was

threatened by King

Zedekiah.

&

ONLINE GIVING

Every person’s finances

and family situation is dif-

ferent. Jesus makes it clear

that it matters not how

much one gives, but that it

is planned, calculated,

at least somewhat sacrifi-

cial (see Luke 24:1-4),

and not simply from what

is “leftover” at the end of

the month. We propose the

tithe (10%) as the ideal

every family can consider

working towards. This

means taking steps to give

5% to one’s parish, and 5%

to other charities or causes

you have personal passion

for. You can register online

at www.saintbrendan.org

and click on the link

“Online Registration/New

give online, click on the

“Online Giving” link. It’s

helps sustain our parish. If

you need help with online

giving, please call the Par-

ish Office at 425-483-

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Both the first reading and today’s psalm say clearly that the Lord hears the cry

of the poor. Have I been given the gifts—of time or money or abilities—to be the

means by which God answers their need?

CALLED TO SERVE AS CHRIST CAMPAIGN How can I give to the Called to Serve as Christ

campaign?

Selecting the best gift plan depends on one's per-

sonal financial situation and goals. Gifts made by

cash, check, credit card or Electronic Fund Withdrawal (EFT) are the most

common and will allow the Archdiocese to address its immediate needs.

Checks should be made payable to the Called to Serve as Christ campaign.

Gift intentions are made in good faith, but are not legally binding. Archbishop

Etienne is encouraging all donors to consider stretching your gift over a three-

year period to maximize the total amount of your support. Your commitment

can be fulfilled through monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual installments.

If you wish, you can give to the campaign gifts of stock, real estate, life

insurance and other planned gift opportunities. As tax laws are always

changing and everyone’s situation is unique, donors are encouraged to consult

with financial advisors to determine which method of contributing is most

beneficial to them. The archdiocesan Stewardship and Development Office can

assist you with making the necessary arrangements for such gifts. Contact

[email protected] or 206-903-4620.

To date, our parish is at 5.9% participation and has raised $386,651 toward

our goal of $1,511,762.
