Parishioner Anna Hodges says that Cinco de Mayo is much more than

another holiday marked on the cal-endar. It’s a day of tremendous pride and joy in Mexican heritage, dating back to the Mexican army’s victory over France during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Here at St. Boniface, we have a special way of honoring this Mex-ican holiday through our parish’s annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration. Held each year as close to the fifth of May as possible, this event provides us with an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture as a community while also benefiting those in need.

“It helps raise funds for our parish’s Tuition Assistance program,” Anna says. “All the money raised goes directly to our scholarship fund, as-sisting families in need so that they can afford to send their children to Catholic schools.”

ción anual del Cinco de Mayo de nuestra pa-rroquia. Celebrado cada año lo más cerca posible del 5 de mayo, este evento nos brinda la oportunidad de celebrar la cultura mexicana como comunidad y al mismo tiempo beneficiar a los necesitados.

“Ayuda a recaudar fondos para el programa de asistencia de matrícula de nuestra parroquia,” dice Anna. “Todo el dinero recaudado va directamente a nuestro fondo de becas, ayudando a las familias que lo necesitan para que puedan permitirse enviar a sus

How do you feel at the end of the Palm Sun-day Mass each year? Have you ever noticed

the abrupt shift of tone during the course of that liturgy? It begins with great joy as we celebrate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to the acclamation of the crowds. But, then, the mood swings to sorrow when the Passion Gospel is read, for we hear those same crowds shouting, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” a few days later.

Palm Sunday begins Holy Week, the most im-portant week in the Christian year. The confusion of conflicting moods is spread through the week, especially during the Easter Triduum from sun-down Holy Thursday to sundown Easter Sunday.

Holy Thursday offers us the glorious Mass of the Lord’s Supper celebrating the institution of the Eucharist before we pass to the sadness of the be-trayal and arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Geth-semane. The next day brings us the Good Friday Liturgy of the Passion with our recognition of what our sins did to the Incarnate Son of God. Then, after a day of waiting as we mourn Jesus’ burial and repose in the tomb, we celebrate His victory over sin, Satan and death at the Easter Vigil on Saturday night or at the Masses the next day. If we have participated in all the main services of the Triduum, we arrive at Sunday evening exhausted, but joyful.

This year Palm Sunday falls on the first Sunday in April, so we observe Holy Week and Easter Sun-day early in the month. That means we will spend most of April in the Easter Season, a period filled with joy and thanksgiving. Our gladness comes not only because Christ rose from the dead, but also because we benefit from it. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it, “The Paschal mystery has two aspects: by his death, Christ liberates us from sin; by his Resurrection, he opens for us the way to

a new life” (CCC, 654).In other words,

Christ’s Resurrection is the source of our own future resur-rection. St. Paul wrote about it to the Romans in the fol-lowing words: “For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be unit-ed with him in the resurrec-tion” (Rom 6:5).

Eternal life in union with Christ — a hope for a new life beginning now and extending on into heav-en — is the result of Jesus’ Resurrection. What greater grounds for thanksgiving can there be than this Easter hope?

How do we show our joy and gratitude to God for this amazing gift? We join in worship and we praise God by word and song. We share the Good News of Jesus’ victory over death with our family, friends and neighbors. And we offer back to the Lord a por-tion of the time, talent and treasure He has entrust-ed to us. Yes, the Easter message that we share in the benefits of Christ’s Resurrection is the ultimate foundation for all Christian stewardship.

The Lord is risen, alleluia.

Una Carta De Nuestro Pastor

¿Cómo te sientes al final de la Misa del Do-mingo de Ramos cada año? ¿Alguna vez has

notado el cambio brusco de tono durante el curso de esa liturgia? Comienza con gran alegría cuando celebramos la entrada de Jesús en Jerusalén ante la aclamación de las multitudes. Pero, entonces, el estado de ánimo cambia a dolor cuando se lee el Evangelio de la Pasión, ya que escuchamos a esas mismas multitudes gritar: “¡Crucifícalo! ¡Crucifíca-lo!” Unos días más tarde.

El Domingo de Ramos comienza la Semana Santa, la semana más importante del año para el cristiano. La confusión de los estados de áni-mo conflictivos se extiende a través de la semana, especialmente durante el Triduo Pascual desde el ocaso del Jueves Santo hasta el ocaso del Domingo de Resurrección.

El Jueves Santo nos ofrece la Misa de la Cena del Señor celebrando la institución de la Eucaristía antes de pasar a la tristeza de la traición y el arres-to de Jesús en el huerto de los olivos en Getsema-ní. Al día siguiente nos trae la Liturgia del Viernes Santo de la Pasión con nuestro reconocimiento de lo que nuestros pecados le hicieron al Hijo de Dios encarnado. Luego, después de un día de espera mientras lloramos el entierro de Jesús y reposa-mos en la tumba, celebramos su victoria sobre el pecado, Satanás y la muerte en la Vigilia de Pascua el sábado por la noche o en las misas del día si-guiente. Si hemos participado en todos los servicios

principales del Triduo, llegamos al domingo por la noche agotados, pero alegres por la resurrección del Señor.

Este año, el Domingo de Ramos cae el primer domingo de abril, por lo que observamos la Semana Santa y el Domingo de Pascua a principios de mes. Eso significa que pasaremos la mayor parte de abril en la temporada de Pascua, un período lleno de alegría y acción de gracias. Nuestra alegría viene no solo porque Cristo Resucitó de entre los muer-tos, sino también porque nos beneficiamos de ella. Como dice el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica: “El misterio pascual tiene dos aspectos: por su muerte, Cristo nos libera del pecado; con su resurrección, nos abre el camino a una nueva vida ”(CIC, 654).

En otras palabras, la resurrección de Cristo es la fuente de nuestra propia resurrección futu-ra. San Pablo escribió sobre esto a los romanos en las siguientes palabras: “Porque si nos hemos unido a él a través de una muerte como la suya, también estaremos unidos con él en la resurrec-ción” (Rom 6: 5).

We all see that altar servers and acolytes have an important and special role in the Cath-

olic Mass. In many ways, they lighten the load for our priests and deacons. In a 2015 address to 9,000 altar servers at the Vatican, Pope Francis stated, “Serving at the altar is a privileged way to draw closer to Jesus, which in turn enables you to open yourselves to others, to journey together, to set demanding goals and to find the strength to achieve them.”

Bill Buckley and Mike Devault are trained and instituted in the diocese as acolytes. An acolyte is a special ministry instituted by the bishop to serve at the altar for the priest and deacon. When necessary, they may also serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, sacristans, and more.

Bill knows how important the Altar Server and Acolyte Ministries are as Fr. Paul, and other priests, have a lot to focus on during Mass. There are many youth in our parish serving in the Altar

Server Ministry, but more are always needed. “By assisting the priest and deacon in the cel-

ebration of the Mass, we help to make the Mass move seamlessly,” Bill says. “It seems so simple, yet it requires the altar server to fix their attention on the smallest of details, and in doing so, will do and learn things most others never will, and see the Mass in a more profound light.”

To say that Bill loves serving would be an un-derstatement. After journeying away from the church and coming back a few years ago, he felt this was a great way to get involved, after prompt-ing from Fr. Paul.

“It is simply humbling,” Bill says. “To know and understand the parts of the liturgies, why we do what we do, and serving our priest and deacon in performing those liturgies is, in essence, serv-ing the Lord.”

Todos vemos que los servidores del altar y los acó-litos tienen un papel importante y especial en la

misa católica. En muchos sentidos, alivianan la car-ga de nuestros sacerdotes y diáconos. En un discur-so de 2015 a 9,000 servidores del altar en el Vaticano, el Papa Francisco declaró: “Servir en el altar es una forma privilegiada de acercarse a Jesús, que a su vez les permite abrirse a los demás, viajar juntos y es-tablecer metas exigentes. y para encontrar la fuerza para lograrlos.”

Bill Buckley y Mike Devault son entrenados e ins-tituidos en la diócesis como acólitos. Un acólito es un ministerio especial instituido por el obispo para ser-vir en el altar del sacerdote y el diácono. Para Bill servir en el altar es lo mas importante que puede hacer.

Después de viajar lejos de la iglesia y regresar des-pués de unos años, sintió que esta era la mejor y exce-lente manera de involucrarse, después de recibir ins-trucciones del P. Pablo.

“Es simplemente ser humilde,” dice Bill. “Cono-cer y comprender las partes de la liturgia, por qué lo que hacemos, es y servir a nuestro sacerdote y diácono en la realización de la liturgia es, en esen-cia, servir al Señor.”

“It’s really a family-oriented event and is open to the entire local community,” Anna says. “We also have a raffle with items do-nated by parishioners and local business-es. Last year, for example, we had a power saw and a guitar among other things.”

Not only does the Cinco de Mayo Cele-bration benefit a worthy cause, but it is also a great way to bring parishioners and local community members together. This allows the overall spirit of hospitality to continue to grow and flourish here at St. Boniface.

“There is just an overall spirit of joy and fellowship,” Anna says. “I think it spreads the news that we’re an open community. It shows our belief in children and the impor-tance of Catholic education. Just like that song, we show that we are Christians by our love. The Cinco de Mayo celebration fosters just a great feeling of community.”

“Solo hay un espíritu general de alegría y compañeris-mo,” dice Anna. “Creo que difunde la noticia de que somos una comunidad abierta. Muestra nuestra creencia en los niños y la importancia de la educación católica. Al igual que esa canción, mostramos que somos cristianos por nuestro amor. La celebración del Cinco de Mayo fomenta un gran sentimiento de comunidad.”

Everyone loves springtime. The weather is warmer and beautiful flowers are blooming all around us.But anyone with a beautiful garden will attest that

the flowers do not magically appear as if the season change itself miraculously makes the flowers bloom. Beautiful flowers and lush gardens are the result of the gardener’s hard work.

Imagine that a man is given some flower seeds. The man then buries the seeds in the ground and leaves them on their own. As the months pass and rain falls, some seeds may receive enough nour-ishment to bloom. But simply burying seeds in the ground will hardly make for a gorgeous garden. Rath-er, if the man truly wants to enjoy many beautiful flowers, there is much care and work ahead. Recog-nizing the hidden beauty within these simple seeds, he must cultivate the ground, plant the seeds in a sol-id foundation, then water and fertilize them through-out the year — only then will he see the proper fruit these seeds were made to bear.

This simple illustration speaks to the heart of us this season — not only as we look around at the flow-ers, but more importantly as we reflect on the spring-time of the Church. We are celebrating the great feast of Easter when, through His death and Resurrection, Christ offers us the greatest gift of all — eternal life with Him forever. This celebration leads us to reflect on the many gifts God has given us in this life and the fruit they will bear, especially as we look to life eternal.

He has given each of us a multitude of gifts so that we can better serve Him and bring others to Him. Do we notice the hidden potential of our gifts? Do we see them, like the seed — as seemingly small, yet so full of

Todos aman la primavera. El clima es más cálido y hermosos jardines florecen a nuestro alrededor.Pero cualquiera con un hermoso jardín dará fe de

que las flores no aparecen mágicamente como si la es-tación cambiara milagrosamente y hace que florezcan. Hermosos jardines y exuberantes flores son el resul-tado del arduo trabajo del jardinero.

Imagine que un hombre recibe semillas de flores. Luego el hombre entierra las semillas en el suelo y las deja solas. A medida que pasan los meses y cae la llu-via, algunas semillas pueden recibir suficiente alimen-to para florecer. Pero simplemente enterrar semillas en el suelo difícilmente será un hermoso jardín. Más bien, si el hombre realmente quiere disfrutar de mu-chas flores hermosas, tiene que trabajar con mucho cuidado y con anticipación. Reconociendo la belleza oculta dentro de estas semillas simples, debe cultivar el suelo, plantar las semillas en una base sólida, luego regarlas y fertilizarlas durante todo el año; solo enton-ces verá el fruto adecuado que estas semillas hicieron para dar a luz.

Esta simple ilustración nos habla al corazón de no-sotros esta temporada, no solo cuando miramos las flores, sino más importante cuando reflexionamos so-bre la primavera de la Iglesia. Estamos celebrando la gran fiesta de Pascua cuando, a través de su muerte y resurrección, Cristo nos ofrece el mayor regalo de todos: la vida eterna con Él para siempre. Esta cele-bración nos lleva a reflexionar sobre los muchos dones que Dios nos ha dado en esta vida y el fruto que darán, especialmente al mirar hacia la vida eterna.

Él nos ha dado a cada uno de nosotros una multi-tud de dones para que podamos servirle mejor y atraer a otros a Él. ¿Notamos el potencial oculto de nuestros regalos? ¿Los vemos, como la semilla, como aparente-mente pequeños, pero tan llenos de fruta? Todo lo que

fruit? Everything we have — our time, talents and treasure — is a gift from the Lord. Do we accept gifts in gratitude, then put them to use by cultivating and nourishing them so they will bear the proper fruit?

Just like springtime flowers that we enjoy, our time, talents and treasure need to be cared for. Our gifts need to be cultivated and nourished. It is only then that we will see them for what they are — won-derful gifts given by God meant for His greater glory.

Like the seeds, if we use our gifts flippantly, we may see some fruits here and there. But we are called to so much more — we are called to build a beautiful garden. We are called to offer God the most beautiful flowers of all.

This season, as we look at all the beautiful flow-ers around us and enjoy God’s creation, let us think about the seeds in our own lives. Ask yourself if you have accepted the gifts God has given you — your time, talents and treasure — and have cultivated and cared for them properly. Or, do they just sit dor-mant within you yearning to bloom?

Esta temporada, mientras miramos todas las her-mosas flores que nos rodean y disfrutamos de la crea-ción de Dios, pensemos en las semillas en nuestras propias vidas.
