School Registration The School Registration process was an affirming experience for the staff and students. We received feedback from the panel on the key commendations and recommendations yesterday afternoon and can now relax a little after all our hard work. The school has been registered for another 5 years, and we have much to celebrate! Thank you to our School Board and P&F parent representatives who attended breakfast with panel members yesterday. This was a very pleasant start to the day. The panel were very impressed by the strong parental support we enjoy here at St Bernard’s and the direction we’re taking to implement key changes to curriculum and facilities. I congratulate our Student Representation Council for the mature way they demonstrated their leadership capacity and for their imovie presentation they created for the panel. Great work team! Commemorative Brick Wall You may have noticed the construction of the commemorative brick wall, which was completed on Monday. A huge thank you to Billy Shooks for organising the construction of the wall. The P&F have been asked is it too late to buy a brick. The answer is 'No'! An order form will be sent home next week. We are trying to sell 100 more bricks, so that stage 2 of this permanent school feature can be completed. Principal’s Leave Next week is my final week at school before taking a month’s leave. Dear Parents and Carers Tomorrow is the feast of the Assumption of Mary – the Mother of Jesus. Marian feast days, that is, those days in the Church calendar that honour Mary, have a special place in the Catholic Tradition. ‘The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, however, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven.’ http://www.loyolapress.com/assumption-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary-august-15.htm

Next Wednesday 20 August 2014 is St Bernard’s Feast day. St Bernard is our patron saint and is a role model for us as someone committed to their faith and belief in standing up for what is right. St Bernard had a deep devotion to Mary. He was particularly inspired by the messages of God’s love which are found in the Bible. The school motto – That All May Be One – is an example. We will be attending Mass at 9.15am to celebrate this feast day. Doubt ‘Why do some people have a strong faith and others a weak faith? Why do some people find it easy to believe while others find it hard? And that leads to a more important question: If our faith is weak, is there anything we can do to make it stronger? Even the most physically healthy person has bad days. That’s just the way human life is. For example, on one day life’s depressing. It’s an exasperating experience. We find fault with everyone and everything. We curse our enemies and shout at our friends. On another day life’s exciting. It’s an exhilarating experience. We love everyone and everything. We forgive our enemies and hug our friends. Faith is a lot like this too. On some days it’s bright and exciting. On other days it’s dark and exasperating. The next time you have a bad ‘faith’ day keep in mind this true story. It will help you get through the day and keep your perspective. Shortly after World War II, workers were clearing out the debris from a bombed-out house in Cologne, Germany. On one of the cellar walls of the house they found a moving inscription. It had apparently been written there by a fugitive Jew who had used the basement to hide from Nazis. The inscription read: Messenger of Humanity is a platform to amplify and unite a generation’s call for a better world. The first day of action will be 19 August: World Humanitarian Day. This is a day to celebrate humanitarians around the world. In an effort to build a global sense of momentum, we will call on our Messengers of Humanity to take an important social action on this day. http://worldhumanitarianday.org/en/about Making Jesus Real I thought I saw Jesus last Thursday at the supermarket. It looked like Cooper and Alicia’s mum but I knew it had to be Jesus because it was getting late and I had to prepare a birthday morning tea and she said ‘I have a spare cake at home, would you like me to send it in?’ So it must have been Jesus who always had time to help others. Thank you, Michelle for the God moment. It is these seemingly unimportant ‘Go(o)d’ moments that renew us, and in the face of often overwhelming bad news they balance our lives and help us to remember that there is goodness by the bucket load, and often in the most unexpected places. Deepen our faith, O God: Deepen our understanding of your Word; keep us open to the prompting of the Spirit; broaden the scope of our compassionate acts; inspire us to new endeavours in this faith community; enable us to support the world-wide church. Amen

Peace and blessings on you week Helene Boller Religious Education Coordinator

Dear Parents

Archdiocese Athletics Carnival

A BIG congratulations to the 31 students from St Bernard’s who travelled to the AIS in Canberra to compete at the Archdiocese Athletics Carnival last Thursday.

Surprisingly, it was a beautiful day in Canberra. Our students competed against students from Northern and Western region areas. To reach this level of competition is such an achievement and all students should be extremely proud of themselves.

From this, we congratulate 9 St Bernard’s students who have been successful in selection for the Mackillop Trial team. These students will be competing at the Track and Field Arena at Olympic Park on Monday 15 September . We wish these students all the very best of luck at the next carnival.

MacKillop Trials Team

I spoke to some of the students who competed at the carnival. This is what they had to say….

Tyne P: ‘I liked how they had the track and field events running at the same time. I ran the 100m and it was good fun. It was my second time at Canberra and it is good to start learning what it’s like there.’

Isaiah M: ‘I ran the 800m race. It was hard because it was a junior event and I was the only 9 year old. But it was fun!’

Jackson B: ‘It was a fun day but the hardest thing was when I had to try to catch up to another boy in the junior relay race.’

Kye B: ‘It was a good day! We had a bad start to the relay race and it was hard to try and get ahead.’

Sophie M: ‘It was fun but it was a bit confusing when people starting crossing lanes in the relay race’.

Cooper G: ‘In the morning it was really cold!’

Alicia R: ‘I realised that I am tiny compared to the other girls in shot-put!’

Luke G: The best thing about going to Canberra was that I Came 1st in my heat!’

Have a happy week,

Megan Grant
