REFLECTIONS

“Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.”

“John the Baptist is ‘more than a prophet.’ In him, the Holy Spirit concludes his speaking through the prophets. John completes the cycle of prophets begun by Elijah. He proclaims the imminence of the consolation of Israel; he is the ‘voice’ of the Consoler who is coming. As the Spir-it of truth will also do, John ‘came to bear witness to the light.’ In John’s sight, the Spirit thus brings to comple-tion the careful search of the prophets and fulfills the longing of the angels. ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son God. … Behold, the Lamb of God.’” ****** IN MEMORY OF J. KEEFE ELLIS The magnificent pine trees that you see beside the monument in from of our St. Bede Church, were provided by several friends of Keefe Ellis. The knew him well, they loved him. They knew especially well how deep in Keefe’s heart was his love for his parish. So we are grateful to this band of friends for their generosity. At the same time we thank Joe Vigliotti for doing such a good job in planting this memorial. As you admire the beauty of the trees, whisper a prayer to God for our “Keefer”. CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE for ST. BEDE PARISH We face a challenge this year in the celebration of Christ-mas. Christmas falls on a Monday. Dec. 24, therefore, is both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve. That means that a proper celebration of the Lord’s Day [Sunday] and the Lord Jesus’ Nativity [Monday] requires careful planning. How will you and your family be faith-ful and joyful? SUGGESTION: Families with young children attend the Vigil Mass at 5pm on Saturday, Dec. 23 and the 4pm or 6pm Vigil Mass on Sunday. CHANGE FOR FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT Dec. 24: No 12 noon Mass! If your schedule requires a Noon Mass, please go to St. Paul Cathedral.

SCHEDULE: To fulfill Sunday Obligation: Saturday, Dec 23 - Vigil Mass - 5pm Sunday, Dec. 24 8am & 10am___________ To fulfill Christmas Obligation: Sunday, Dec. 24 - Christmas Vigil Masses 4pm & 6pm & 10pm; CHOIR’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM - 9:30pm Monday, Dec. 25 Christmas Day Masses 10am & 12 noon

2nd SUNDAY of ADVENT: John the Baptist is an im-portant Advent person! He prepared the way to Jesus by calling people to acknowledge their sins and receive a baptism of repentance. Are you/we prepared to welcome Jesus into the world? We need to acknowledge our sins and receive forgiveness for the wrong we have done. In order to do this properly, extra times for receiving the sacrament of confession are provided during the Advent season. See the bulletin and sign in the back of Church for details. Let us keep in mind our failings and resolve to keep Jesus in our minds and hearts as we interact with others this 2nd week of Advent.

SAVE the Date - Mark your calendars and join St. Bede School and Parish at the Annual St. Bede Pasta Dinner on Friday, January 19th. Please consider becoming part of this St. Bede tradition. For more information contact Hol-ly Sommer at [email protected] or Becca Weber at [email protected]

Attention families of young children: Join us for the Children's Liturgy of the Word each week during advent. Children's Liturgy will occur during the Sunday 10am Mass on December 3, 10, and 17, and at a special time during the Saturday Vigil 5pm Mass on December 23. Note that Children's Liturgy will not occur on Sunday, December 24.

Donations Needed - The sixth grade is collecting new and gently-used winter hats, scarves, and gloves for the Christ's Hands Project which provides warm clothing for adults and children in need. The Project is a program of the Pittsburgh Catholic and the Red Door Ministry of St. Mary of Mercy Church. Donations can be placed in the designated box located in the back of church until Friday morning, Dec. 15. Thank you in advance for your support of this worthwhile and very important project. \ Make St. Bede Sparkle For Christmas!! Help is needed to get our Church ready for Christmas! Please bring a bucket and some rags and join the cleaning crew on Saturday, December 16th, right after the 9:00am Mass. The more the merrier, and the faster the job will get done! Many helping hands are needed!

St. Bede Choir CD’s: Over the years, 3 CD’s have been recorded by St. Bede Choir. All 3 CD’s are still available during the Advent season and can be obtained for $5 each after any Advent Masses. Please see Jennifer at the piano or any choir member to purchase one.

Advent Taizé Prayer Service: The music ministries of St. Bede, St. Charles Lwanga, and St. James will be host-ing an Advent Taizé Prayer Service on Sunday, December 10th at 3pm at Corpus Christi Church of St. Charles Lwanga Parish (1550 Lincoln Avenue, Pgh. Pa 15206). Taizé is an international ecumenical prayer community in Taizé France which was founded in 1940 by a young seminary student, Roger Schultz, as a place of hospitality and reconciliation during World War II. Today, thou-sands of young people come each week to Taizé to pray with the brothers and discern God’s purpose for their lives. We invite you to join in this time of Advent reflec-tion through sung prayer, scripture readings, and times of silence. A small reception will follow. All are welcome! Please contact Jennifer Gorske at 412-370-2638 or [email protected] for info.

STREAM Suite Renovation Project and Master Plan-ning Information Session - As some of you may have heard, St. Bede School is planning a renovation project to create a new STREAM suite on the first floor of the school. (STREAM = Science, Technology, Religion, En-gineering, Art and Math). The project will include new science labs, art room, research lab, and engineering mak-er space. The goal of this project is to support St. Bede’s already outstanding curriculum and teachers in these sub-ject areas and to continue to maintain our school’s status as a best-in-class institution in STREAM education. The project is currently in design and fundraising is underway, with several generous commitments from major donors. This project is part of a larger master planning process to make ongoing capital improvements to the school facili-ties. To learn more about this exciting project, the master planning process and the STREAM curriculum, please join us for an information session/social after the 5:00pm Mass on 12/16/17 and the 10:00am mass on 12/17/17. Coffee/donuts/refreshments will be served. Please con-tact Kevin McNulty with questions at [email protected].

Calling All Catholic Runners!!! - Run any race in the 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon (5/6/18) for FREE by running for Dirty Vagabond Ministries. Raise money to support Catholic inner-city youth ministry here in our city! Learn more at dirtyvagabond.com/marathon. Don’t just run, run for a reason!

Dirty Vagabond Ministries is a Catholic inner-city youth ministry outreach that works with at-risk youth. We have two Pittsburgh locations. Our first site in Pittsburgh is in the Garfield section of the city in conjunction with St. Maria Goretti Parish, and we opened our second location in Sharpsburg earlier this year in collaboration with St. Juan Diego Parish.

Prepare the Way of the Lord Advent is our annual time of anticipa-tion and expectation for the coming of Jesus at Christmas and, ultimately, at the end of time. During this season we make many preparations so that

we can be ready to meet the Lord. We prepare our hearts through prayer and reconciliation to be a fitting place of welcome for Jesus to dwell. We also prepare our homes as places of warm hospitality to welcome neighbors and strangers alike with a loving and generous heart. This Advent, we also find ourselves anticipating the changes that will soon be upon as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative. How are you preparing for the new realities in our parishes? Will your heart meet these changes with resistance or with the resolve to do what it takes to foster new life in your community and help grow the Church? Take some time this Advent to prepare the way of the Lord as he comes to make us and our Church ever more alive! Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. Children’s Worship Bulletins are available at the back of the church. These bulletins are designed specifically for children and are available in two age groups for pre-school/kindergarten and school-age (mainly Grades 1-3). They are related to the Scripture readings and are a quiet and fun way to involve children in worship through pic-tures, puzzles, dot-to-dots, and more. They are designed to supplement and enhance the children's understanding of the Scripture readings heard during Mass. Take a copy for your child to use during Mass and/or to complete at home.
