ALTERNATE/DAYCARE TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2011/2012 Transportation to daycare is provided to families of students in elementary school. The safe delivery of these students to the correct address every day is important to the Board. To this end, daycare trans-portation is only accommodated on a fixed schedule for all 188 days of the school year. Students may choose a bus route for the morning, and the same or other bus route for the afternoon, but the route(s) must be fixed 188 school days of the year. Using one stop location Monday and Tuesday and another stop location the other days of the week is not allowed. If a child has a variable bus schedule due to daycare they will have to decide on one route for the 2011/12 school year. To make this change families must fill out a Daycare Transportation form at their school before the end of this school year. I would invite any parents to contact the Transportation Consortium (www.brucegreyschoolbus.ca for contact information and policies and procedures)to discuss their child's transportation options.

Transportation arrangements can also be made for Custodial Provisions provided that the arrangements are a two week/consistent rotating schedule. Families must provide a detailed calendar showing the details of bussing.

GRADE 3 EQAO The EQAO assessment have occurred on Tuesday, May 31st, Friday, June 3rd and will con-tinue on Tuesday, June 7th. Following EQAO testing the students will be treated to Ice Cream Sundaes on Tuesday, June 7th at 2:00 p.m.. We require two or three parent volunteers to organize this special treat for the students and Grade 3 teachers. Supplies are generously supplied by Parent Council. Thank you to Margaret Weikmann for coordinating this special treat for our Grade 3 students and staff.

ST. BASIL’S WALK FOR LITERACY We were very pleased with the results of our first Walk for Literacy held on Sunday, May 15th. Despite the weather we had an awesome turnout of families and staff. In the end the walk raised $5, 114.06 to support our classroom libraries and book room. St. Basil’s Parent Council pledged $3,000.00 to our first ever walk. Thank you to Parent Council for their generous support! We look forward to building on the success of this year’s event in 2012.

Summer will soon be here, but before heading to the local pool, beach or river, the Red Cross encourages everyone to take a moment to think about water safety.

Toddlers and infants are a group at risk although there has been a significant improvement in the drownings in this age group in the 1990s. There was a 40% decrease in drownings of one to four year old toddlers and 80% in in-fants less than one year old. This dramatic change corresponds with exten-sive research-based revisions of Red Cross national swimming and water safety programs and education campaigns by many agencies across Can-ada.

There’s still room for improvement, however. Toddlers drown mainly in swim-ming pools without self-closing and self-latching gates. If all home pools were equipped with this simple and inexpensive device, nearly all toddler pool drownings and about one-third of all toddler drownings could be eliminated.

To reduce the risk, the Red Cross recommends the following safety tips when diving and swimming:

Diving:

• Neck and back injuries are common after diving incidents and can result in permanent paralysis.

• One of the major causes of spinal injuries is drinking and diving. Young men are at greatest risk.

• The majority of backyard pools are NOT designed for diving.

• Never dive into above ground pools.

• Think before you dive.

• Ensure water depth is at least 10 feet deep. Remember the depth of lakes or oceans can change due to tides or seasons.

Ensure water is deep enough for the entire path of the dive, and that no rocks or debris are in the way. The length of a typical dive depends on a variety of factors, such as height of dive and size of diver.

Swimming:

• Learn proper swimming and safety techniques by enrolling children in Canadian Red Cross water safety classes.

• Be aware of your limitations. Don’t go beyond your ability.

• When swimming in the ocean, be aware of the tides and currents and keep an eye on the shifting weather patterns.

• Know the signs of hypothermia.

• Supervise children at all times.

• Fence backyard pools and ensure gates have self-locking latches.

• Communicate and post pool rules. Keep emergency equipment and first aid kits close at hand.

“Don’t allow anyone to persuade you to do some-thing you think might be dangerous. Trust your in-stincts as a parent and stay close to your children while they are in, on or around the water.”

Here are some precautions to take for your family when going outside:

• The worst hours for going out in the sun are from 10 AM to 4 PM. It’s best to avoid going out in the sun during this time frame because the sun’s ultravio-let (UV) strength is at its peak. If for some reason you have to be out in the sun at these hours use the maxi-mum amount of protection that you can. A sun block with an SPF rating of 50 is the ideal dur-ing these hours. Sun blocks are even stronger than sunscreen. Non-protected exposure during these hours would increase your family’s risk of cancer tremen-dously.

• When do we put on the sunscreen? Rub it on half an hour before exposure to the sun. Some people only apply it after going outside. This is a mistake since it takes time for your skin to absorb the sunscreen.

• A common mistake that we make is forgetting certain spots when putting on the sunscreen. So every part of the skin that is exposed should have sun-screen. Ears, feet, behind the legs are places that we tend to forget.

• Keep reapplying it every 2 hours. Especially if you go into the water. Even if your sunscreen is water resistant you still need to reap-ply every 2 hours.

• Clothing helps to block sun rays so if possible, wear a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat to help protect your skin.

• Remain in the shade as much as possible. When your kids are playing in the sand, have them remain under a large umbrella for more protection.
