The Vicar’s Letter

Dear Friends,

The excitement is now over and we can settle down into a bit of a routine again.

Sadly, I am not saying that about the pandemic, although we are drawing closer to the end as more people are vaccinated, numbers of those in hospital with the virus are declining and thankfully so is the death rate. Some of the restrictions have been lifted, though we cannot sing as a congregation yet (hopefully that will change this month) and so before much longer we can get back into a routine.

The excitement is over and we can get back into a routine again was said meaning the fact that we are at the end of the season of festivities, we have gone through Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter and we are now at the time when we can settle down for a while. We have come to the time of the Sundays after Trinity, Ordinary Time or the Green Season. In some years when we get to this point it can feel as though there are weeks of not very much ahead of us. This year I am quite looking forward to that. Looking forward to the rhythm of life taking me along, having some time which is ordinary.

Some of you may remember the song from the 1960, usually sung by Sammy Davis Jr, it is from the musical Sweet Charity. the song tells us that the Rhythm of Life is a power full beat, puts a tingle in your fingers, a tingle in your feet. It is true, the rhythm of life is powerful, it is our driving force but the force has to be balanced, you cannot be flat out all of the time, so the quiet times are important. The times of not being in festivals in church is important, we can think about where we are now.

Thinking about The Rhythm of Life, on the Leeds Anglican Diocesan website there is a section about the rhythm of life lots of prayer resources to help and inspire people, there are also courses which people may wish to join in, give it a look at leeds.anglican.org

Let us pray for quieter times ahead (and yes, I know there a many people who have been shielding who are longing for some excitement at the moment). Let us pray for quiet times, for safe times, for times when we can be together as friends and fellow worshippers.

Let us hope that the excitement is over and we can settle down into a bit of a routine again.

With my love and prayers, Fr Michael

Mrs Nobody The golden sun was shining upon the steep white town. The murmuring sea was wearing her fairest bluest gown. A merry wind was playing and shouting mightily, when down the street, with sagging feet Came Mrs Nobody.

So slow her pace — so thin her face, so white and winterly, Worn with the stress of hopelessness was Mrs Nobody. A dozen times the springtime had come to bush and tree. A dozen times the summer had gladdened land and sea, New life has birth for winters dearth. New hope for bird and bee. But life and hope still pass me by, sighed Mrs nobody.

Yet good and great physicians had tried but all in vain. To ease her of her weariness, to cure her of her pain. Now in despair and sadness she walked the shining way, Nor could she see that this would be her own most glorious day. For fast and fleet from every street appears a surging throng, and caught at speed, like a wavering weed it carries her along.

What is this commotion oh! Tell me if you can. She asked an eager woman, she asked a wild eyed man. And each of them made answer — a witty quick reply. Jesus is coming ! Jesus, Jesus is passing by Jesus who healed the leper. Jesus who stilled the sea. Jesus who cured the mad man, This Jesus might heal me if I can get near him. Thought Mrs Nobody.

Knuckles knees and shoulders were crushing her to death, When up the street, where two ways meet, Came Jesus of Nazareth.

Then those who saw him shouted, and with a mighty roar, The people thronged about him pressing him more and more, calling him Son of David.

Bidding him set them free, and far behind that man so kind, came Mrs Nobody. She crept along by inches, was nearly trampled on. Bending now low, swayed too and fro. Her courage almost gone. Till out her hand went swiftly The lordly might condemn. But with wish and will she stretched until she touched his garments hem. And that almighty moment all blindingly she knew, healing had come in fullness. Great gladness thrilled her through Life in its perfect meaning possessed her top to toe. In that glad hour eternal power, loosed her and let her go.

Now to go home in silence. But in Capernium’s hill, unhurried and unhasting, Jesus the lord stood still. ‘Who touched me’ said Lord Jesus. ‘Not I’ cried everyone, ‘still somebody has touched me’, said Jesus, David’s Son.

Somebody’s hand has touched me, and slowly tremblingly, out from the crowd all talking loud. Crept Mrs Nobody. She kneeled before lord Jesus, the crowd still standing by. She saw his great compassion She said ‘Lord it was I. I touched you blessed Jesus. I touched you for my need was sore and great, and could not wait. And I am healed indeed’.

Into the face of Jesus, she looked all loving wise. She saw the love of God above outshining from his eyes. Be of good cheer my daughter, go in peace said he. Then into peace that would not cease, went Mrs. Somebody.

BUTTERFLIES

Below:The Painted Lady The Painted Lady, an internet Thelma’s photo. picture

The Peacock

taken from the intenet.

From Brenda:

The butterfly in church looks like a Peacock (Aglais io).

Its caterpillars feed on nettles and it is common throughout the UK in a wide range of places including woodland and woodland edges, parkland, coastal and urban areas. It can be found from February to October.

It uses its wings to ward off predators by opening and closing them in rapid succession. This shows its false eyespots and makes a noise which repels its attacker. It had a wingspan of approx. 6cm.

All this information is available in the Woodland Trust Woodland Butterfly swatch book. It is one of the books we take with us when we go on narrow boat holidays.

From Thelma: Answer– I was reliably informed that our belated church resident

is a Painted Lady. The Jury is out on this.

• LAUNCH OF NEW DIGITAL SERVICE

• The PGS has announced the launch of a new digital service,

designed to enable prospective donors to set up a regular Direct

Debit donation to St. Bart’s on the PGS website.

• The service went live on Monday 1st March 2021

• How does it work?

• Click on the link below to go to St. Bartholomew’s giving page

parish/armley-st-bartholomew-leeds/

• Click on the ‘Give now’ button next to ‘Pledge your gift’ at the

bottom of the page. You will need to register with PGS as a new

donor.

• Activate your account by creating a password

• Complete your payment details

• Confirm your details

• So there are now three ways you can give via PGS – online, by

telephone or by paper gift form.

Why should I use PGS?

Because it’s a simple and

secure way for churches to

receive regular donations by

Direct Debit.

Because it allows you to

support St. Bart’s in the future

by giving you the option to

increase your gift each year in

line with inflation.

Because it eases the

administrative burden for

churches.

Is it safe?

Unlike Standing Orders, your online donations to PGS are covered by

the Direct Debit Guarantee. This means that if an error is made by

PGS or your bank/building society, you are entitled to a full and
