St Bart’s Kids on Sundays Children’s Ministry Package WEEK 11 of 12 Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6). Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi- age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity). Both our Crèche and Preschool curriculums are play-based in nature and allow children to learn about the focus Bible passage in a variety of modes - be it role play, discovery, games, art, music, and more. How to structure a Kids Program Having a clear and consistent structure each week, will help your children get the most out of this curriculum. We have found it necessary to structure in elements such as settling in time (for early years) and small group discussions (Sunday School) to help children build connections with each other and the team. Games (Sunday School) have been strategically placed before the small group time so that children have an opportunity to run and move before being asked to sit in a circle, listen, and participate in discussions. Similarly, we use morning tea (Crèche and Preschool only) as a great way to focus the children so they can listen to the story and main message of the day (little people generally love to eat quite frequently so it also helps keep them happy!). The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are dierent in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing. St Bart’s Kids on Sundays Children’s Ministry Package • WEEK 11 of 12

Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6).

Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi-age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity).

The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are different in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing.

How to Use We would love to see children and families growing as disciples of Jesus - so please feel free to use any of these resources at your church, school or at home. To use these materials,

• Think about the age ranges of your children, and how you could best arrange groups for discussion and activities.

• Download the year level required. If you are a family or from a smaller children’s ministry setting, we would advise you look through this week’s resources and aim for a year level roughly in the middle of the ages present in your family/church. There is a summary Teaching Table at the end of this document that may help guide your choice.

You will find most of these resources can be adapted to groups of varied sizes, albeit with some creativity!

This is a free, printable resource, available via download. Multiple copies can be made to resource your family or church. We do ask however, that you don’t upload these resources on your own webpage.

For further information Please contact us on [email protected] if you require any more information regarding our Children’s Ministry resources.

Additional Useful Family Resources:

Making Perfume:

If your kid loves being creative, why not get them to make their own perfume?!

Simply gather a jar, a nice bottle, scissors, water, things to decorate the bottle, and then head outside to forage in the garden for some herbs and flowers. This website shows how creative some kids have been in creating their own scents. http://mericherry.com/2017/03/28/making-perfume-with-kids/

Activities: • Teach your kids how to flip a coin, using their thumb.

• Hide 30 coins in your backyard. Send your children out to see if they can find them all.

Worship:

Set aside some time this week where you can listen to a range of worship together as a family. Listen carefully to the words - which songs help reflect where your heart is with God? Sing along (perhaps even dance!) and give God everything you have during this moment.

Some great family friendly worship resources can be found on Spotify. Check out some of these:

St Bart’s Kids Preschool Session Outline

Snacktime We recommend that snack time (fresh fruit and crackers or similar) be served during the Storytime. This way the children are seated, listening to the story and ready to engage in discussion about the text.

Activity/Craft Storytime

During snacktime, read the scripture from the Preschool files. This week’s scripture will focus on Matthew 26:1–16.

Counting coins

Gather a collection of coins (silver if possible). Print out the Coin Matching sheet. Get the children to place a coin on each image of a coin. Then count up how many there are! For an added challenge: get the children to flip all the coins onto the same side (i.e., either heads or tails).

Oil and Water

(Parent supervision required). Have 2 glass jars (with sealable lids). Have one jar willed with water and the other with cooking oil. Ask children what they notice about both of these liquids. Talk about colour, smoothness, bubbles, whether you can see through it, etc). Now tip a bit of water out of the water jar, until it is 3/4 full. Then tip some of the oil into the water jar. Watch what happens. Seal the jar tightly and then give it a shake. Watch as the oil bubbles dance around inside and then wait to see the oil settle on top of the water.

Smell Test Gather several different oils and perfumes from your house. These could be perfumes, essential oils, cooking oils, coconut oils, baby oil, etc. Guide children to look at the colour and consistency of the different oils; to smell them; and to share which one smells the best to them. Talk about what each of the oils is used for (some for cooking, some for making the house smell nice, some for wearing, etc. Explain that in today’s Bible story, Mary had some oil that smelled very good, but she didn’t use it for cooking, but she used it to celebrate Jesus.

Colour by Number/Colouring Sheet Make copies of the colour by number worksheet (Gospel Project) or the Colouring Sheet. Children may need some guidance recognising the numbers and colouring them in the correct colours. At the end it will show a jar. Reinforce that they have discovered a beautiful jar in the stained glass and that in today’s story, someone had something very valuable in a jar. Recap what that special something was!

Song: Heads, shoulders, knees, and toes Note: Some Bible scholars believe that the woman poured the oil on Jesus’ head and wiped off the overflow that landed on His feet with her hair. Since people in Jesus’ time ate reclining with their feet tucked behind them, both accounts are possible. Explain that the Books of Matthew and Mark describe the woman pouring oil on Jesus’ head. Sing the song ‘heads, shoulders, knees, and toes together, making sure there are matching actions.

Prayer Use one of the grace posters to give thanks before eating. Point to the icons and the words as you say this together before snack time.

Dear God, help us to be extravagant with our love for Jesus, just like the lady who poured perfume on Jesus’ head. May we not just know about Jesus, but may we grow in our love for him, everyday. Amen.
