NEW! Mission Cooperative Appeal

It is time for our special collection for the Mission Cooperative Appeal. The collection will be taken on the weekend of June 25/26. We count of your generosity once again. This year the funds received will help directly support the following participating groups: Diocese of Warangal, India; Diocese of Irinjalakuda, India; Diocese of Buea, Cameroon; Guadalupan Sisters of the Holy Spirit. “When we act with compassion, generosity, and commitment to justice for the ‘least among us’, we act as Jesus’ true disciples.” — Bishop Robert J. Baker

NEW! Railings in Sanctuary

A local craftsman added the railings that you now see on either side of the altar, this past week. They have been made to complement our church’s beautiful décor and are installed in a solid manner. These new railings make our sanctuary a safer place for all who are ministering, working, or cleaning there.

Homeschooling Support

Farewell Gathering

Final plans are being made for Father Jerabek’s farewell potluck. Ham, fried chicken, drinks, cake, and paper goods will be provided. We are asking guests to bring additional meat dishes such as meatballs, lasagna, baked ziti, chicken, and ham, as well as side dishes. Suggested sides include macaroni & cheese, corn, pasta salad, potato salad, green beans, baked beans, broccoli, carrots, and fruit salad. Brownies, cookies, pies, and pound cake would also be welcome. No crock pots, please! Theresa Petruzella is coordinating the meal. Please call her at 205-901-0734 and let her know what you plan to bring. (We would like to have a “balanced” variety.) We look forward to seeing everyone in the gym on Sunday, June 26 immediately after the 10:00am Mass!

NEW! Preparing to Welcome Father George

In preparation for Father George’s arrival, Father Jerabek has been working on finalizing improvements in the rectory, including the re-carpeting of the pastor’s suite. In addition, it would be nice to have a welcome gift basket for him – if you would like to donate toward this, please let Father Jerabek know. A “welcome” card will be out next weekend for all to sign, to be included with the basket. Finally, there will be a welcome reception for Father George, perhaps on the second weekend of July (the first weekend being a holiday) – more info to follow. Let’s prepare to offer a warm welcome! “I Love America” Patriotic Concert

Everyone is invited to a fun, patriotic birthday celebration for our nation! St. Aloysius Church will host its 4th Annual “I Love America” concert on Friday, June 24 at 7:00pm. With patriotic singalongs, performances, and a color guard, this evening will be entertaining and inspiring. No charge. St. Aloysius Church is located at 751 Academy Drive in Bessemer.

CATHOLIC VOCABULARY

This Week’s Term: MANUTERGIUM

A “manutergium” is the cloth that is used to wipe the Sacred Chrism off of a newly-ordained priest’s hands during the ordination ritual. Traditionally, this cloth would have been made of pure linen. In the past, it was wrapped around the priest’s hands following the anointing, as part of the ritual; nowadays it is no longer specifically included in the ritual, and so is used after the anointing, usually off to one side or in the sacristy, to absorb the holy oil. The anointing with Sacred Chrism signifies that the priest’s hands are consecrated to offer the Eucharistic sacrifice and, indeed, to handle the Most Blessed Sacrament, Christ’s Body and Blood. A priest traditionally retains the Chrism-soaked manutergium after his ordination until his mother’s death. When she dies, his manutergium is wrapped around her hands and her body is buried with it. A very touching, pious tradition has it that when she goes for her Particular Judgment, the Lord asks her what she gave Him in her life on earth, and she extends her hands and says, “I gave you my son as a priest”; then, Jesus grants her entry into Paradise. (This is a very beautiful thought and tradition, but clearly it cannot in any way be understood as meaning that mothers of priests are somehow excused from living a life of virtue and holiness like everyone else! They do not get a free pass just because their son is a priest!) The word “manutergium” comes from Latin and literally means, “hand towel”.

This is the final installment of “Catholic Vocabulary”.

I have truly enjoyed writing these “glossary entries”

and I have received much positive feedback indicating

that most everyone who read them enjoyed them also.

Our Catholic faith and tradition is a treasure full of

riches. Let us all continue to try to discover it more

fully and understand it better! — Father Jerabek
