Trunk or Treat
Our annual “Trunk or Treat” celebration is this Sunday, Oct. 26, 6:00 — 8:00pm. Families are invited to participate in activities in the school gym and then trick-or-treat in the parking lot. (Please, only life-affirming and church-appropriate costumes!). Bring your children and grandchildren to this safe and fun event!
World Priesthood Sunday
This weekend we celebrate World Priesthood Sunday. Our Diocese currently has 10 men in the seminary discerning a priestly vocation. Today, you have an opportunity to make a positive impact on the future of the Church in North Alabama. As you may have noticed in the One Voice, it costs approximately $35,000 per year to educate just one seminarian. Please consider giving monthly to the Seminarian Education Fund, to help ensure that all who sense a call to priesthood in the Diocese of Birmingham are able to respond “yes”. (See the enclosed form.) Thank you for your support!
Diocesan Priest Necrology
Of your charity, pray for the following deceased priests: 10/21/1996 Msgr. Frank Wade
10/23/2014 Fr. Desmond Regan 10/30/1996 Fr. William Jones 11/1/2008 Fr. John Owen
Marriage Encounter Weekend
Married Couples: How about some time just for the two of you? How about a weekend that will focus on love, caring, and relationship? Plan to go on a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend and come back with a marriage that is refreshed and full of passion. The next weekend in the diocese is scheduled in Cullman, November 7-9 at St. Bernard Abbey. You can register today by calling Bob & Joy Hernandez at 678-985-0125, or online via http://www.wwme-Section5.org/register.php.
NEW! Fall Back!
Don’t forget! Daylight Savings Time ends next Saturday night (i.e., 2:00am on Sunday, November 2). Turn your clocks back an hour before going to bed!
REMINDER! First Saturday
Next Saturday, November 1, Mass will be offered at 8:30am (for the Solemnity of All Saints). Rosary before Mass.
Altar Sodality Raffle
The Ladies’ Altar Sodality is raffling a new 32” LG Flat-Screen Television for their Fall Fundraiser! Tickets are $5.00 each, or 6 for $25.00. See any Sodality member (listed on back) or stop by the church office for tickets. The drawing will be on Sunday, December 7.
All Souls Day Envelopes and Novena
Please write the names of your beloved deceased for remembrance during the month of November on the All Souls’ envelopes (available in your box of envelopes or in some pews – enclose an additional sheet if more space is needed). It is customary, for those who are able, to include a donation for the church as well. The envelopes will be placed before the altar each week. A novena of Masses for all the faithful departed will be celebrated by Father Jerabek from November 22 to 30, with a special remembrance in each Mass for those names inscribed on the envelopes and in the parish book of the dead. May all of our deceased loved ones rest in the peace of Christ!

Our Wonderful Catholic Faith
Do You Know Your Prayers?
I still have memories of repeating the Hail Mary when I was a child, over and over again, in order to memorize it. Even though we were not a particularly religious family, it was clear: this was something I had to learn, and I’d better do it! And so also with the Our Father, Glory Be, and Act of Contrition. But those were the only prayers I learned as a child; the rest, I learned as an adult.
Today we are in the awkward situation where many (most?) children do not learn even these basic prayers by the time of their First Holy Communion — and many (most??) adults do not know many prayers beyond these basic ones. How can this be? Our Catholic heritage is so rich; there are so many beautiful prayers written by saints and sinners down through the ages, that have been handed on to us!
One of these venerable (but, today, rather forgotten) prayers is the Memorare. This Latin word means “remember”, and is pronounced “mem-mor-AR-ray”. Do you know it? It goes like this:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother! To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.
The Memorare is one of my “go-to prayers”: when someone asks me to pray for a special intention, I usually say a Memorare for it.
Enclosed in the bulletin this week is a leaflet with a selection of traditional prayers that – in my humble opinion – every Catholic should know. How many do you know? Take a look and see – and maybe learn some new ones! These prayers are like old friends that are always there for us, particularly during the difficult moments in our lives.

RIP, Father Desmond Regan (1/23/22–10/23/14)
Fortified by the sacraments of Holy Mother Church, Fr. Desmond “Des” Regan passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Thursday, October 23 at the St. John Vianney Residence for Retired Priests in Birmingham. At the moment of his passing, Bishop Emeritus David Foley was praying at his bedside along with another priest and several lay people; Bishop Foley then celebrated Mass for the repose of his soul. Fr. Des was born on January 23, 1922 and ordained a priest forever on June 8, 1946. During his 50 years of active service in the diocese he had many assignments, including at Our Lady of Lourdes and Holy Infant of Prague parishes, as well as John Carroll High School. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral on Tuesday, October 28 at 11:00am, with interment at Elmwood Cemetery. Please pray for the repose of his soul.

PRAYERS THAT EVERY CATHOLIC
SHOULD KNOW FROM MEMORY Redacted by Rev. Bryan W. Jerabek, J.C.L.
Traditional Latin names of the prayers, where applicable, are given in parentheses. I am of the opinion that the use of “thou/thee” and “thy/thine” in prayers is a venerable part of our English-language Catholic tradition which enriches our
prayer, not takes away from it. However, those who disagree are certainly free to change the words to “you” (thou/thee) and “your” (thy/thine).
Our Father (Pater Noster)
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done:
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary (Ave Maria)
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is
the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
Glory Be (Gloria Patri)
Glory be
to the Father
and to the Son
and to the Holy Sprit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now,
and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Act of Contrition
(Traditional Version)
O my God,
I am heartily sorry
for having offended thee;
and I detest all my sins
because I dread
the loss of heaven
and the pains of hell,
but most of all
because I have offended thee,
my God,
who art all good
and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve,
with the help of thy grace:
to confess my sins,
to do penance,
and to amend my life. Amen.
Memorare
Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known
that anyone who fled
to thy protection,
implored thy help,
or sought thy intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my mother!
To thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy,
hear and answer me. Amen.
Hail, Holy Queen
(Salve Regina) Hail, holy Queen,
mother of mercy:
our life, our sweetness,
and our hope!
To thee do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve;
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping
in this valley of tears.
Turn, then,
most gracious Advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this, our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement! O loving!
O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray for us,
O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy
of the promises of Christ. Amen.
St. Michael Prayer
St. Michael, the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against
the wickedness and snares
of the devil.
May God rebuke him,
we humbly pray.
And do thou,
O prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God:
cast into hell Satan
and all the other evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Angel of God
Angel of God,
my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love
commits me here:
ever this day be at my side
to light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen.
Grace before Meals
Bless us, O Lord,
and these, thy gifts,
which we are about to receive
from thy bounty.
Through Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
Grace after Meals
We give thee thanks,
Almighty God,
for these and all thy benefits.
Who livest and reignest,
world without end. Amen.
(If you do not like “livest and reignest”,
just say “live and reign”.)
Morning Offering
O Jesus, through the
Immaculate Heart of Mary,
I offer you my prayers, works,
joys, and sufferings of this day:
for all the intentions
of your Sacred Heart,
in union with
the holy sacrifice of the Mass
throughout the world,
in thanksgiving for your favors,
in reparation for my sins,
for the intentions of all
my relatives and friends,
and in particular,
for the intentions
of the Holy Father. Amen.
Fatima Prayer (Most often recited at the end of each
decade of the Rosary)
O my Jesus,
forgive us our sins.
Save us from the fires of hell.
Lead all souls to heaven,
especially those in most need
of thy mercy. Amen.
Concluding Prayer of the
Holy Rosary
O God,
whose only begotten Son,
by his life, death,
and resurrection,
has purchased for us
the rewards of eternal life:
grant, we beseech thee,
that meditating upon
these mysteries
of the most holy Rosary
of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
we may imitate what they contain
and obtain what they promise,
through the same Christ,
our Lord. Amen.
May the divine assistance
remain always with us.
And may the souls
of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace. Amen.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph:
I give you my heart
and my soul.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph:
assist me in my last agony.
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph:
may I sleep and take my rest
in peace with you. Amen.
Angelus (Traditionally recited at the start, middle,
and end of each day. The “V” and the “R”
indicate “verse” and “response” for when
it is prayed in a group: the leader says the
verse and all others recite the response.)
V. The angel of the Lord
declared unto Mary.
R. And she conceived
by the Holy Spirit.
All: Hail Mary, full of grace,…
V. Behold, the handmaid
of the Lord.
R. Be it done unto me
according to thy word.
All: Hail Mary, full of grace,…
V. And the Word was made flesh.
R. And dwelt among us.
All: Hail Mary, full of grace,…
V. Pray for us,
O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy
of the promises of Christ.
V. Let us pray.
All: Pour forth,
we beseech thee, O Lord,
thy grace into our hearts:
that we, to whom the incarnation
of Christ, thy Son,
was made known
by the message of an angel,
may, by his Passion and Cross,
be brought to the glory
of his Resurrection.
Through the same Christ,
our Lord. Amen.
Eternal Rest (Requiem)
Eternal rest grant unto them,
O Lord,
and let perpetual light
shine upon them.
May their souls and the souls
of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace. Amen.

Seminarians Jim Handerhan and Wyman Vintson
with Bishop Baker as he accepts their Candidacy to
Holy Orders.
The Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama currently has ten men studying for the priesthood. This is both a blessing
from God and a sign of a maturing diocese. However, with this blessing comes the financial responsibility and
obligation to educate, form and support these men who have made many sacrifices by entering the seminary.
The average cost per student per year is $35,000 which includes tuition, room and board. One of the best ways
to financially support our seminarians is to make a tax-deductible donation to the Seminarian Education Fund for
the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama. Income produced through this endowment fund is utilized to meet the
rising costs of education and forming the future priests of our diocese.
The Seminarian Education Fund began as the Diocesan Burse Club. It is a permanent fund set aside to provide
income for the education of seminarians that Catholic Charities and grants do not cover. Donations made to the
fund will continue to support our Vocations program every year, as long as the Diocese exists.
A successful vocation program must be built upon a foundation of prayer. Your generosity will help make the
fruit of that prayer a reality. Please pray daily for our priests and seminarians.
Support Our Future Priests—The Seminarian Education Fund All donors will be remembered in the prayers of the seminarians.
