The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham incorporates the City of Nottingham, the whole County of
Nottinghamshire and five parishes in South Yorkshire. The population is 1.15 million – 51% live in the greater
Nottingham conurbation, 31% in ex-mining areas and 18% in rural. There are 305 churches (252 parishes), served by
142 stipendiary clergy and licensed lay workers.
In 2016 a refreshed diocesan vision was embraced across the diocese, recognising the imperative for
Growing Disciples: wider, younger, deeper’.
• • ‘Wider’ in that we will seek to grow disciples in every part of the diocese, with no retreat from any community: urban centre; outer estates; rural villages; or market towns.
• • ‘Younger’ in that we will seek fresh ways to harness the boldness and creativity of children, students and young people across the diocese, not least in Nottingham which is the 4th youngest city outside London.
• • ‘Deeper’ as we grow in knowing Christ, so that as his disciples we can be an increasing blessing to the people among whom we live and serve in the workplace, family and community.
The Bishops Senior Staff, Bishop’s Council and Diocesan Synod have demonstrated their clear commitment to sharing
in all aspects of this vision and strategy. In autumn 2016 more than 1000 PCC members attended 5 vision evenings
around the diocese. We have discerned a series of emerging priorities that will facilitate growing new disciples in
every parish across the diocese. Compelled by the love of Christ by 2023 we will seek to:
• Welcome 7000 new disciples into the fellowship of Christ and his church
• Commission 1000 younger leaders (especially 15-30 year olds) equipped and inspired to serve the purposes of God in the Church and society.
• Plant or graft 75 New Worshipping Communities (NWCs) across the diocese to increase our reach in telling the story of Jesus to all.
• Grow 25 larger Resource Churches with clear commitment to develop leaders, plant New Worshipping Communities, and disciple the young.
• Serve and pray together as 1 Church contending for the gospel in every community and sphere of public life in our city, county and region.
In this new chapter every parish has an opportunity to review its role within the diocesan mission, so that it can play
a significant part in the strategic commitment to ‘Growing Disciples wider, younger and deeper.’ St Augustine’s and
St Barnabas have a vital role to play within these urban estate communities. They will give a new priest significant
opportunities for work with existing neighborhoods and those in the new housing that has recently been built or is
being planned. There is a committed team of Readers and lay leaders who have served the churches faithfully and
will continue to support the new incumbent. They need, with the diocese, to go another level of growth in numbers
and faith.
Bishop Paul has said: “It is my hope that each worshipping community will develop a compelling picture of its own
future in God’s purposes with an expectation of growing numerically and in the scope of its mission. It is my prayer
that the new Priest will have the creative leadership and imagination to develop discipleship, plan for growth and
reach out to the unchurched of all ages in each community.”
THE DIOCESE OF SOUTHWELL & NOTTINGHAM
GROWING DISCIPLES WIDER, YOUNGER AND DEEPER
A statement from
the Bishop of Southwell & Nottingham,
the Rt Revd Paul Williams
and the Interim Assistant Archdeacon
Revd Canon Mark Adams

We are prayerfully seeking a priest who will lead us in growing disciples in Pleasley and Mansfield and nurture the church family.
Are you a person with a joyful and infectious faith who is open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your life and leadership?
Are you?
• A strategic leader who will collaborate across the two
churches, inspire us and help grow disciples in the
(13-45 age group) that we are not reaching
• Keen to communicate the Gospel and lead worship
with understanding, reverence and creativity
• Expand the worshipping community in both Parishes;
joining in Growing Disciples– Wider, Younger, and
Deeper, especially reaching the new housing
developments in the area.
• Someone with a pastoral and prayerful heart for the
whole community relating well to people of all ages
and backgrounds
• A good listener; who values each person; who will
encourage us to grow in faith, help us to develop our
gifts, and challenge us to reach outwards.
• Will help our congregation to grow deeper in faith
through preaching and teaching.
• Be an active and visible part of all aspects of the
community.
We are able to offer
• A deep desire to grow—wider, younger, deeper.
• A significant story, providing opportunities for mission
and the development of the parish

time off each week.
• A PCC that will support the new vicar in their ministry
• Two local schools that enjoy their involvement in the
parish
• A ministry team across the two churches comprising

OUR VISION
At St Augustine's and St Barnabas’, God is calling us to:
1. Develop our faith, worship and pastoral care
God is calling us to be a joyful and spiritual Church, with a living and confident faith, from
which emerges a deep fellowship with and care for each other.
2. Grow our churches (with a particular focus on children and families)
God is calling us to grow numerically, nurture more disciples, and provide a welcome
environment where children and families in particular can explore faith.
3. Nurture our presence in the community
God is calling us to be churches in and for our communities, shining with the light of God’s
love. We must be proactive in outreach, visible to our communities and creative and flexible
in our responses to those around us.
4. Deepen our unity with each other
God is calling St Augustine’s and St Barnabas’ to grow closer and become one body, with
many parts, journeying together in worship and service.
5. Strengthen our finances and resources
As a church, God is calling us to be sustainable: financially, practically and spiritually.

St Augustine’s and St Barnabas’ parishes are
situated at the west side of Mansfield.
The population is mixed with many former
mining families and pensioners living within
the parish.
A thriving business park has been located
within the parish which has provided much
needed employment.
Mansfield Town Football club has set up a
state of the art training academy within the
parish adjacent to Farmilo School.
The most recent figures showed that the
parish is among the bottom 10% of most
deprived parishes nationally, and with 21% of
the population over sixty five years of age.
The parish has strong connections with the
four local schools and two care homes and
other local bodies including District and
County Councillors.
St Augustine's Community Hall is a source of
interface with the community. It is used by
the following: Jiggy Wrigglers (mother &
toddlers), Keep fit classes, Mansfield &
District Male Voice Choir for practice,
Rainbows, Old time dancing, Weight
Watchers and Brownies. St Barnabas’
church is used for St John’s Ambulance
meetings.

ST AUGUSTINES MANSFIELD
St Augustine's Surrounding Area
St Augustine's Church is situated on the east side of the parish within the town boundary, approx. one
mile from the town centre, thirteen miles from Southwell, fifteen miles from Nottingham and eleven
miles from Chesterfield There is good road network. Chesterfield Road (A617) goes through the
catchment area. The M1 motorway is ten minutes drive away. Sherwood Forest and the Derbyshire
National Park are fifteen minutes and twenty five minutes drive respectively. There are local shops/
supermarkets within easy reach.
The population is mixed with many former mining families and pensioners living in council properties on
the Bull Farm estate. There is a lot of owner occupier housing in four main areas; to the east of
Chesterfield Road; to the South of Abbott Road; recent additions at the King Fisher estate;
and the Avalon estate.
The Church Buildings
The church has recently had its ninetieth birthday, and is situated on land gifted by the Duke of
Portland. It is build of red brick with a Rosemary tile pitched roof. The church started life as a dual
purpose building with chairs for seating and the chancel was regularly used as a stage for drama
productions. When St Ann’s in Nottingham closed the pews were bought for St Augustine's and an
organ chamber was added.
About fifty years ago a hall known as the Community Hall was built.
Five years ago the Church and Community Hall were refurbished and the heating boiler was replaced.
The church had both the choir stalls and the pulpit removed which opened up the chancel, new PVC
windows and exterior doors were installed much improving the ambient temperature in church, the
interior lighting was changed to LED and the interior received a new coat of paint.
The Community Hall at the time of the church’s refurbishment received new PVC windows together
with LED lighting and redecoration. It has a well ordered kitchen and is used each day of the week by
various organisations. Both the church and hall are kept in good condition by the current church
wardens.

St Barnabas surrounding area
St Barnabas lies on the west side of the parish just within the
District of Mansfield and is immediately adjacent to the county
border with Derbyshire. The ancient village of Pleasley straddles
the county border, which is defined by the river Meden. The
original village of Pleasley, probably dating from the 12th century,
has now virtually disappeared
At the present time the Church community is made up of three
clearly defined area:
• The Old Village. This overlooks Meden Square, St Barnabas
Church is situated within this area.
• Weavers View. This estate has been built within the last four
and half years on what was known as the terrace (former
mining houses)
The new estate consists of three and four bedroom houses
some of the new build is considered as social housing
• Radmanthwaite consists of pre war semi and detached
houses. Farmilo School is located within the estate, Magnolia
House is a substantial care home is also located within this
area and visited on a monthly basis by one of the Readers.
• Adjacent to St Barnabas Church there is a care-home called
“The Dovecote”. Adult residents who have leaning difficulties
attend Sunday Worship with their carers, and are made most
welcome.
St Barnabas’ Church
The church was built in the 1890’s. As with many churches built in
that era it consists of a Chancel, Crypt, Vestry, kitchen, toilets (with
one set out for disabled persons,) a meeting room and the main
church. Some years ago the church was re-ordered removing the
choir stalls and pews, this has enabled the church to be used for
events other than church services during the week. As with
churches of this age it takes the Churchwarden a large resource in
time and effort to keep it maintained. It recently received its
Quinquennial survey the output of which is currently being
finalised.
